The original ship was built in Glasgow in 1899 by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co for the Orient Line. It was the largest Orient Line passenger ship completed in the nineteenth century and was the third vessel of the Line to bear the famous “O” prefix, which was traditional through to the last ship, the mighty 'Oriana'. Her dimensions were 8,130 gross tons, length 490.6ft x beam 56.6ft (149.50 x 17.22m). She had one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 18½ knots. Her maiden voyage from London, via Suez, to Melbourne and Sydney commenced on 3rd February 1899. She was the largest British flag ship sailing to Australia at the time and continued to regularly sail between London, Melbourne and Sydney throughout her life. She last sailed as a passenger ship between Melbourne and Sydney on the 3rd November 1916. During World War I, she was converted to a troopship and was used to transport soldiers and assist with military operations. She was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-52, 40 nautical miles (74km) off the coast of Sardinia in the 12 May 1918. She was on her return journey from Alexandria to Marseilles with six other transports, carrying troops of the 52nd and 74th divisions when she was lost, resulting in one casualty. Her maiden voyage brought her to Melbourne in 1899. The ship carried the first Australian troops from Brisbane to WWI in September 1914.A large ship builder's model of the 'SS Omrah' an Orient Line one funnel passenger steamer of 1899. Photographic record of overseas places visited by local resident who was a member of armed service during WW2. Des Nicholson was born in Northcote in 1909. He enlisted in the military in mid 1940, having already served 2 years in the Citizens’ Forces. Before he signed up, he lived in Kew with his mother, Isabella. His enlistment documents indicate that he was employed as a transport driver, although his discharge papers state that he was a hairdresser. His photo album shows pictures of him demonstrating skills in that area in various deployments overseas; his enlistment documents refer to his unit being the 8th Division Petrol Company, while for much of his service he was assigned to Nursing Duties in the 2/7 Australian General Hospital. His overseas postings included travels through India to the Middle East, Egypt and Greece. While fulfilling these duties, he was an interested photographer, keeping records of the sights he saw in many of the places he visited, as well as photos of the military living conditions and the people he worked with on a day-to-day basis. The ‘tourist’ photos Des took would be of particular interest as a current-day comparison for those folk who might be familiar with the locations he passed through. After the war, Des again lived with his mother but eventually, in 1953, he married Kathleen Watson who lived in Eltham. The wider Watson family was well-known in the area, and the sisters Kathleen and Ruby were residents in the Glen Park area in Eltham North. After Des and Kath married they continued to live in Kath and Ruby’s house near where the current soccer and cricket sporting complex is now located. Ruby never married and they evidently stayed in the same place until, one by one, they each died in the early 2000s. Longmore’s was a manufacturing chemical pharmacy of many over-the-counter preparations, including Sulphur Hair Restorer, Strengthening Tonic, Blood and Liver Pills, Asthmacur (for asthma) and Hoyle’s Miraculous Oil (for miracles unknown), He was a native of New South Wales, but his father, Mr. Joseph Longmore settled in Melbourne in the late 1850s. Mr Longmore was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School, and leaving early, he studied and qualified as a chemist. Argus “12 October 1921, Mr. Francis Longmore, chemist of Bourke Street was at his business on Saturday but he had a chill which developed into pneumonia, and he died yesterday morning. The funeral will leave from his residence Wontravell, Gower Street, Kensington. He was a widower, his wife having died a year ago and he leaves a grownup family of 2 sons and 6 daughters. Carlisle Francis Longmore and his certificate number as a pharmacist was No. 1440; he qualified as a pharmacist at his final exam in Victoria on 11 September 1905. He had three pharmacies in addition to the address on the covers, one on the corner of Flinders and King Streets, Melbourne, one at 130 Bourke Street East and one Brunswick Street, North Fitzroy. VX39077 Neil Ross enlisted in to the AIF on 21 November 1940 at Royal Park and was posted to 2/29 Battalion, The Battalion completed training at Bonegilla and Bathurst and then went to Malaya as part of the 27th Brigade, assigned to 8th Division. This Battalion fought in several actions prior to being captured on 15 February 1942 in Singapore. The Torpedo Manual was created in 1889 presumably as part of the training program of the Victorian Naval Torpedo Corps.This item is significant partly because some of the information in the manual is not found elsewhere but also as it the only known copy of this manual. The manual is also evidence that a more professional approach to training was undertaken by the Victorian Naval Forces after the mid 1880s. When the First World War broke out, Australian men from all backgrounds and professions were called to serve their country.  Members of the Victorian Police force were some of the first to answer the call with twenty men joining the first convoy of soldiers who left Australian shores in October 1914. Over the course of four long years, one hundred and thirty-eight Victorian Police enlisted from stations across the state. Of these, twenty-seven lost their lives. Whilst the fate of each man was different, a deep commitment to protecting and serving the public was common to all. The Order of the British Empire was formed in 1917 to reward service to the British Empire in the United Kingdom and abroad. Originally having only a civil division, a military division was added in 1918 to acknowledge distinguished military service of a non-combative nature. The Order has five classes of appointment in each division and a medal of the Order. In descending order, the classes are: Grand Cross (GB); Knights and Dames Commander (KCB and DCB); Commanders (CBE); Officers (OBE); Members (MBE), and Medal (BEM). Mrs Joyce Hayward along with her husband Cyril, had a 30 year association with the Warrnambool Theatre Company. They acted, directed and produced a number of works from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s. Mrs Hayward taught drama and speech at Warrnambool High School and St Ann’s College. They both worked towards reviving the Warrnambool Arts Council.. They were involved in Christ Church choir, readings for the blind, Probus and Penguin club. They retired to Bribie Island in 1985. Joyce Hayward died aged 97 in 2007. Joyce Hayward played a significant role in the development of the performing arts in Warrnambool. The British Empire medal is an award of some importance and recognizes the contribution Mrs Hayward made to the Warrnambool Community. 14 Stokes Place was the home of Peter and Carla Vermey. The land was purchased in May 1979 and the home built by Peter and Carla Vermey after the developer, Macquarie Builders went bankrupt. Sold October 2017 by Morrison and Kleeman Real Estate. Stokes Place was part of the Stokes Orchard Estate which was developed from the break-up of the the orchard owned by Frank Stokes who lived on the northeast corner of Nyora Road and Eucalyptus Road. His daughter Beryl advised that the Shire had levied a rate assessment on individual parcels of land within the orchard which became unaffordable resulting in its sub-division and sell off. The Stokes Orchard Estate was developed by Macquarie Builders in two stages starting with stage 1 in 1976. Stokes Place was part of Stage 2 in 1979. The Estate was bounded between Nyora Road, Eucalyptus Road, Diosma Road and Stokes Place. The original orchard only just reached the left most portions of Stokes Place and did not go fully up to Diosma, rather to just beyond the extant of Stokes Place. Stokes Place was known within the family as "The Oats" as that is where they grew oats. Frank Stokes moved to Eltham c.1945 after visiting Harold Bird to view his orchard, located diagonally opposite Stokes Orchard from the intersection of Eucalyptus Road, Pitt Street and Nyora Road. It was on Harold Bird's recommendation that Frank purchased the land.The Stokes Orchard Estate collection is typical of housing developments of the late 1970s and 1980s.
