Book, Val Smith, Don (Ripper) Reid : story of an Upper Yarra Valley sawmiller, 1997
Prior to 1901 the men working in the forests of the Upper Yarra Valley were mainly paling splitters and shingle cutters. When the Warburton-Lilydale Railway was completed in 1901, sawmilling became a major industry and one of the main employers in the Upper Yarra Valley. The railway enabled the sawmillers to get their timber to the Melbourne markets easily and economically. The mills were built, usually in the allotted logging area. Tramlines were used to bring timber from the mills to the railway. In the Upper Yarra Valley the tramlines were mostly horse drawn, or if it was too steep a combination of winches for lowering and then horse to complete the journey. Steam locomotives were used on the Powelltown to Yarra Junction tramline and Ezard-Richards' tramline at Starvation Creek. Donald Ambrose Reid has been a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, Shire Councillor, firefighter and friend but through it all a Sawmiller. This is Don Reid's story. A story of a sawmilling family. Don's memories also give an insight into the early history of Upper Yarra Valley and the changes that occurred in the sawmilling and logging industry. Postcard - Postcard of Don Trading Company, Devonport
This postcard may have belonged to the donor's paternal grandmother, Maggie Johnston Rees (1867-1964) as there is another postcard in the collection recounting a trip in Tasmania where the writer is 'M. J. Rees'. This postcard is probably post-1926 when the company had completed a renovation of their Devonport building (which included 'a large, illuminated clock'. These and other postcards and photos came from the estate of David Moyle (1938-2015) who was a police officer in Emerald during late 1960s-early 1970s, and subsequently at Belgrave in the early 1980s. David Moyle was closely associated with the now defunct Sherbrooke Historical Association. This postcard is significant because it was part of a collection belonging to a community member who had a close association with a local historical society.Don Trading Company Building - building has three stories topped with a large clock.Printed on bottom L: 'DON STORE' Embossed on bottom R: 'A MARSHALLS / STUDIOS DEVONPORT'david moyle, police, emerald, belgrave, maggie johnston rees, don trading company, devonport, marshalls studios -

Book, Australian Scholarly Publishing Pty Ltd, Art For the Country, 2019
This book by Dr Don Edgar, a well-known Australian sociologist, educator and historian, tells of the establishment and development of art galleries in regional Victoria. This includes the Warrnambool Art Gallery, established in the early 1880s. The book documents the efforts of local groups and individuals to set up art galleries and their battles with government indifference and lack of adequate funding extending up to the present day. This book is of considerable interest as it gives details of the founding and development of the Warrnambool Art Gallery, set in the context of the establishment of other early regional galleries in Victoria. It is an important addition to our research library. This is a soft cover book of 400 pages. The cover has a white spine with black printing, a back cover with a colour photograph as a background and black printing and a front cover with a collage of colour photographs as a background with white printing. The pages contain a preface, an introduction, seven parts of text material, an appendix, an index and a bibliography.Don Edgardon edgar, warrnambool art gallery, regional art galleries of victoria, history of warrnambool -
