Kew Historical Society IncLeisure object - Construction Toy, Lott's Bricks Ltd, Lott's Bricks: British Made Throughout in Stone, 1945-1955
At the beginning of the 20th century the toy industry was based predominantly in Germany. During the First World War, imports from Germany were banned and the British government instead encouraged toy-making in Britain, as it helped the economy and provided jobs for ex-servicemen. Around this time, English manufacturer E. A. Lott devised a new system of bricks suitable for assembling small buildings. Together with a cardboard roof and instructions, Lott started selling these bricks as Lott’s Bricks in 1918. Lott’s Bricks eventually became even more popular then Anchor blocks, which were produced on the same principles by Richter, the well-known German manufacturer of construction toys. Lott’s success was assured when Queen Mary bought a set from him at the British Industries Fair in 1918. A number of sets were later produced, each with its own series, including Modern, Lodomo and Tudor. The bricks were the last of the old-fashioned composition blocks, which were later superseded by the very different styles exemplified by Minibrix, Bayko and Lego. The Kew War Memorial was planned and constructed at the apex of Cotham Road and High Street, Kew. It was built to commemorate those soldiers from Kew who served in the First World War. The Memorial was designed by the architect Harry Tompkins. It was unveiled by the Governor of Victoria in 1925.An early photograph of this iconic Memorial that locates it in its context. Kew War Memorial is a fine example of a classical style war memorial design. Built in granite and marble as a circular temple supported on ionic columns, its design takes advantage of the centrally-located site and allows a clear view of all faces of the memorial. It honours 917 local residents who served in World War One. Kew Municipal Council appointed a sub-committee in June 1919 to consider a suitable war memorial to commemorate soldiers from the district. In August 1920 the land in front of the Post Office was transferred to the Council for the purpose. A competition for the design of the Memorial offered prizes of offered were £50, £15 and £10. The estimated cost was not to be more than £3500 F. Bruce Kemp won first prize, but Council later rejected the design constructing the Memorial to the original design of former Kew Council Mayor and notable Melbourne architect Harry W. Tompkins. The War Memorial was unveiled by His Excellency the Governor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke on 30 August 1925 in front of 5,000 people. One of a group of photographs, including three within a published photo collage , taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, Dower later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines, railways and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Mount Dandenong Office.The photo collage is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's public transport network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Photo collage, published in The Leader newspaper in 1913, to commemorate the opening of the Malvern to Kew Tramway. Kew Historical Society IncCertificate, Education Department (Victoria), Young Workers Patriotic Guild, 1917
The Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild was formed in Victorian schools in 1916. Each child who raised one pound ‘by personal productive effort’ received a certificate. The money was used for the war effort. The Government Minister, Harry Sutherland Wightman Lawson, and the Director of Schools, Frank Tate, signed each certificate. Lawson (later Sir Henry) was the Attorney General in the Government of Alexander Peacock between 1915-17. He was to become Premier of Victoria in 1918. This is one of three Young Workers Patriotic Guild certificates in the Kew Collection, two from the First World War and one from the Second World War. The framed certificate was donated to the Kew Historical Society by past member, Eva Grant. The certificate was awarded to her sister in 1917.Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild commemorative certificate. Rose Series postcard No. P 1040, titled "Flinders Street Railway Station, Melbourne" showing the entrance to the station, many motor cars, some with black-out headlight covers, a MMTB Leyland bus, and a W2 class tram either 288 or 388 (Kew Depot cars at the time.) with the destination of Spencer St. This would have to be one of the first W2 class cars to have the metal gutter replaced by a storm/drip rail. There is an advertising board on the railway station verandah, advertising Liberty Loans.
