The monument commemorates those from Avoca who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was dedicated on18 November 1921. The memorial was later rededicated in 1988 to also remember those who served in the Second World War. During the First World War, 137 men from the Avoca area volunteered for the armed services and of this number 29 were killed. A plaque, unveiled in 1984, commemorates Sergeant Lewis McGee V.C who enlisted from Avoca in World War One. Colour photograph of the Avoca World War One. The MUIOOF Lodge was located in Union Street, Kew. The Lodge was established in 1863. It was demolished in the early 1990s.The Lodge Board lists the names of representatives of many of Kew's pioneering families. The Board was donated to the Society when the Hall was demolished. In the AWM collection there is also a photo of members of the platoon at the unit slaughter yards in Milne Bay, New Guinea (REF: AWM 0703790). He had multiple copies of this photo, which may have been obtained with the aim of distributing them to other platoon members. Leslie George Lobb - born 15 July 1920 in Box Hill; married Elizabeth Annie Stephenson in 1954; died 14 Nov. 1997. Leslie became a service station / garage proprietor at 352 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert a business he took over from his father. An associated mechanical business operated under the name of Leo Green Motors, at the same address. The family lived next door at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. Leslie's father Harry Lobb had operated at an adjoining property (350 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert) as a fuel and ice merchant, before installing a petrol bowser to service the expanding motor car industry. The house at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert was removed and relocated by the family in 2000 to Mirboo North, Gippsland, Victoria, where it still stands.The photo is a touchstone to local servicemen who served in World War 2.A B&W / sepia photo with a narrow white border of 25 men in uniform. George and Anne Evans settled in Sunbury in 1836 after migrating to Van Diemens Land from Plymouth in 1825. He took upland along the Jacksons Creek and built his Emu Bottom Homestead. He married Anne, who was forty years younger than him on 11 May 1843 and they had six children. He and his wife Anne are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in Compartment 'H'.George died on 26 August 1876 and Anne died on 12 January 1893. George Evans was a one of the first Europeans to take up land in the the area that was originally known as Buttlejork ( Batterjork) in the area now known as Sunbury. The monument is on George Evan's grave. George Evans died on 26th August 1876, aged 92. Miss Evans, the Director of Nursing of Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) is holding a meeting with some RDNS Sisters in a room at RDNS Headquarters, 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne. Mary Evans was born in Adelaide in 1915. She completed her General Nursing Training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and her Midwifery Certificate at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital in Melbourne. Mary worked in the Midwifery section of Melbourne District Nursing Society from 1943–1945, and then qualified as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse. Gaining a Scholarship from MDNS in 1959, she studied and investigated District Nursing practices in England, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Canada and the USA, which had a profound impact on the planning of MDNS. As Deputy Matron, then Matron from 1963, she began implementing her 5 point plan of - Education, Liaison, Ancillary Services, MDNS Centres in strategic areas and Home Health Aides. Miss Mary Evans retired as Director of Nursing of, the now, Royal District Nursing Service in 1978 and became an adviser to the Australian Council of Community Nursing Services. In 1981 she was awarded an O.B.E. for services to District Nursing, and as recognition for her leading role in Community nursing in Australia. From 1986-1990 she was heavily involved in the running of the Baxter Retirement Village. She was also Vice President of the Airdrie Retirement place for nurses in Canterbury. Mary Evans was placed on the Honour Roll of Victorian Women in 2001. Miss Mary Evans is the Director of Nursing of Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS). RDNS changed its uniform style and colour some time in 1971 and this 1972 photograph of the Sisters shows them wearing the new winter uniform of a blue/grey skivvie under a V neck tunic style frock made of blue/grey herringbone winter material, with the RDNS insignia on the upper left, and a beret style hat of the same material. The hat was worn on official occasions. Miss Evans is wearing her uniform of a grey blouse and a skirt and long V neck jacket made of the same blue/grey herringbone winter material worn by the Sisters. The photograph is taken on the steps of RDNS Headquarters, 452 St. Kilda Rd, Melbourne. Part of the white building is seen either side of the steps, and behind the Sisters the wooden and glass panel door is seen.From its earliest years when Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) began to wear uniforms the chosen colour was grey, though the style changed throughout the years as fashions changed from the late 1800s through to the 1970s. Their Trained nurses (Nurses) firstly wore long grey frocks and later a white collar, cuffs and white belt was added, and on their head they wore a white cap with a long white tail hanging from the centre back. When bicycles were introduced the headgear changed to a white pith helmet adorned with a red Maltese cross in the centre front. This was held on with a veil going over the hat and tied under the chin. Over the years there were complaints that the veils became wet in the rain and they asked for a change of uniform, but this did not happen until 1921. Twelve years later the Trained nurses (Sisters) complained their skirts became wet when riding their bicycles in the rain and asked, when raining, to be able to wear breeches and gaiters. This was granted provided they wore aprons when attending patients. It was not long before the uniform changed to a shorter length grey frock, red cardigan, grey coat and grey brimmed hat; later changed to a peaked grey hat. In 1966 MDNS were granted Royal patronage. Now as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Sisters Liz Thomson and Bev Armstrong, in 1971, designed a new uniform and the colour was changed. By 1972 the Sisters were wearing the new winter uniform of a blue/grey skivvie under a V neck tunic style frock made of blue/grey herringbone winter material with the RDNS insignia on the upper left, and a beret style hat of the same material. In summer the uniform became a royal blue V neck tunic style frock, with the RDNS insignia on the upper left, worn over a short sleeve white blouse. A royal blue peaked hat with the RDNS insignia in the centre front was worn at first and then only worn on official occasions. A photo of a class of young legatees in 1951, in a garage, called the East Brighton Group. There are 29 boys, of various ages, in gymnastic gear with the Legacy logo on the chest and 4 men who could be the instructor and a Legacy member. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years, such as gymnastics and swimming classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. The notes on the back mentioned there are 6 other groups of boys (perhaps those in Kew, Fitzroy, Footscray, Malvern and Auburn in the other photos mentioned). The names are: From the left, rear: L/. A photo of the first property owned by Legacy, at 342 Swanston Street. After receiving money in memory of David H Dureau to purchase premises, Legacy purchased the old Hibernian Hall. However there were many issues with the property, including its suitability and the inability to gain vacant possession from the existing tenants. So eventually the property was sold and the money used to buy the current Legacy House, still formally known as the David H Dureau Memorial Building as per the bequest instructions. The notes on the back of the photo say it was sold to Sir Bernard Evans and then to RMIT and it was renamed Storey Hall. The full story of the donation has been pieced together from several sources. Part of the story of the donation towards Dureau House. BG Corporation in New York used 'Brown and Dureau' as agents in Melbourne for their spark plug manufacturing (for the American aircraft based in Australia during the war). A royalty of two shillings and sixpence was agreed. The entrepreneur President of BG Corporation was Richard Goldsmith. L/ Grat Grattan had a friend Mr Edwards who was managing director at Brown and Dureau and heard of the desire by Mr Goldsmith to leave a permanent memorial to ex-servicemen in Australia (Children's Hospital was considered). L/ Grattan took Mr Edwards to Market St (where Legacy was situated at the time) and showed him the inadequacy of the building. It was agreed if Melbourne Legacy could come up with a purchased building in 10 days they would get the money needed and the building was to be named in memory of David H Dureau, who had died at sea during the war. The donation was £27,059. The property purchased was 'Hibernian Hall' in Swanston St (later called Storey Hall when it was acquired by RMIT). After the war it turned out not to be suitable and a new building was required. An act of parliament was required to enable the sale (01262) and consent from the donor was also sought before the sale (document still to be catalogued).
