In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. According to these documents , the horses were required for many different tasks in the operation of the tramways including the moving of freight, removal of sand from the area, shunting of trucks and ballasting and repairing lines when necessary.The contractors had a list of conditions imposed including the provision of six horses of strong working ability and sufficient finances. The contract period was for 1 year and payment was monthly in arrears and hours of operation were from 7 am to 6 pm. These handwritten documents provide an insight into the type of work done in the early days of Warrnambool and the working conditions at the time. Five folded grey paper with red lines around edges. This is the badge of the Australian Commonwealth Horse which was a mounted infantry unit of the Australian Army established during the Second Boer War in 1902. It was the first expeditionary force established by the Commonwealth of Australia following Federation in 1901 and the first to wear the Rising Sun Badge, a design chosen by the British Commander in Chief of the Australian Forces, Sir Edward Hutton. This Rising Sun Badge was the second version of a military badge used by Australian soldiers in 1902.This badge is of great interest as the hat badge worn by the Australian Commonwealth Horse in the Boer War. It is not known if it has any local significance. Brass semi-circular badge in the shape of the rising sun with slightly curved bottom edge. Painted for Mrs Ruby Young whose family owned the hotel at one time - (since burnt down) The hotel was built around 1857 near "Shaw Crossing" when Cowton and Bland selected the site because the bullockies watered and rested their stock on route Belfast and Portland. The 8th Light Horse was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 and sailed for overseas in December 1914 so this trial must have taken place during that period. The Wiles mobile cooker was developed by a Ballarat engineer, James Fletcher Wiles, on the advice of Sir Stanton Hicks, first Director of Catering for the Australian Army. The horse drawn cooker was operated by steam, raised by burning oil, to cook food and heat a baking oven. About 300 units were produced during WW1 (1914-18) and were in service in Egypt, France, and Australia. They could be operational in 20 minutes, and cooking could take place while being towed up to 50 kph..The first trial of this major innovation in military cooking together with this fine study of a light horse regiment on the march makes this object a significant one to the Australian Army and Victoria.Large framed photograph of a regiment of mounted horsemen on the march. The lady could be another resident of Holmbush or it could be his mother or relative taking him on a special outing. The names are not known. He is seen in other photos in the album. Photographed outside the Wendouree Parade depot, late 1887, with 16 workmen standing or lying around the tramcar. Builders Photo. Tram is lettered "BALLAARAT TRAMWAY CO LIMITED". A sign on the advertising board says "Duncan & Fraser, Builders, Ballaarat". The men around the tram are dressed in trade clothes, with aprons, including carpenters, painters and blacksmiths. Water troughs were installed to provide relief for working horses in the first half of the 20th century. This image was taken in Melbourne on Anzac Day 1986 where Des had taken place in the annual parade. The photo itself has had a long journey. It was donated to the Star Hotel in Yackandandah, Victoria by Des Martin in 1994. The hotel changed hands so many times that the custodian "Pip" Beatty felt it was best placed at the Light Horse Museum at Bandiana, Victoria. Its journey was complete when the photo was returned to the Wodonga Historical Society. Des Martin lived all his life in Wodonga, except for his years of service during World War Two. He was raised on the family property Aherlo in the Huon Creek Valley. In 1937 he joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment but in May 1940 led his Wodonga Troop into the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion. This Battalion saw service in Syria, Java, New Guinea and Borneo. After the war, Des returned to Aherlo and his horses. He was granted permission by the Victorian Racing Club to participate as an amateur “gentleman” rider. He became the first president of the Victorian Amateur Riders Association and founded the Murray Valley Hunt Club. Des also played a major role in Australia entering an equestrian team in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and served as a steward at that event. Des also wrote several publications including “Australia Astride” in 1959, a history of the Albury Racing Club – a Century of Racing, and an historical novel “Many a Mile”. He collaborated with R. M. Williams to develop “Hoofs and Horns” to become a national publication. From 1969 to 1973, Des Martin also wrote a column for the Border Mail newspaper. He was also a member of the RSL for almost 50 years and held several committee positions during that time. Des Martin died on 12 April 1995.This is a portrait of a significant member of the Wodonga community who made an outstanding contribution as a farmer, soldier, horseman, author and member of the RSL and other community organisations.A coloured photograph of Des Martin in full military uniform mounted on his horse.
