A fireplace was the most commonly used form of heating a dwelling, cooking, and heating water for laundry and domestic uses.Fireplace accessories were an important part of the decor of houses as well as being useful items.A curved copper pan. The handle is copper tubing with a wooden handle grip. It has 4 feet in the shape of animal paws (lion?). The handle is attached with lion faces. A Berdan pan was a grinding pan. The circular pan was set at an angle, and as the pan revolved, a heavy iron ball rotated in the lowest point, grinding sand or mineral to a fine powder. It was frequently used to grind impurities out of amalgam (gold in mercury), and to grind batch-lots of heavy mineral. It is also known as a ball mill. Two strong wooden A frames supporting large iron pivotable bowl with a large iron ball inside the bowl. There are cogs underneath bowl which are connected to rotating belts extending from main battery shaft. The chute attached below the bowl is directed into a circular metal container. The frame is painted green.

Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. During this time, the Boyds purchased this set of Revere kitchenware, which carries the prized "Process Patent" maker's mark on the thick copper bases. Mandie Boyd recalls: "I don’t remember a lot of cooking going on in them, if any, as they were a pain to clean but looked fabulous hanging on the wall absolutely gleaming. Pictured is the open fire used for cooking that would have been found in a traditional Ithacan home. Whilst most now use electric and portable gas appliances, these open cooking areas can still be found in the kitchens of many of the old homes on the island. The mortar and pestle and baking dishes pictured are sill used today in the preparation of traditional dishes.Cooking and food is an intrinsic part of Ithacan culture and plays an important role in maintaining identity and traditions for the Melbourne's Ithacan community. Recipes and particular cooking techniques are passed on from generation to generation.
