Picnic group from the early 1930's, many of whom are from the Ithacan village of Kioni. The shield shaped badge worn by those in the photo was given to all guests at the picnic. The annual picnic was an important part of the Society's social calendar. The photograph was taken after one of the foot races at an Ithacan Philanthropic Society's annual picnic which took place in the 1920s-1930s. Since the first picnic was organised it is still a popular social event on the club's calendar. A black and white photograph of eleven men standing in front of a grand stand at a sports ground. A man in a suit is congratulating another man who has completed a race. The man standing on the extreme right of the line is holding a little girl and four boys are sitting cross-legged on the ground in front of the men. -

The children were photographed at an Ithacan picnic which was held at one of the racecourses in the Melbourne area in the 1930s. The annual Ithacan picnic is one of the most enduring events for the Ithacan community of Melbourne where generations of families gather to reconnect with heritage. The children photographed were all second generation Australian born children with Ithacan born parent/s. Greensborough has been a popular place for picnics This article describes the first annual Labour picnic organised by the women's committee of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labour Party in 1925. Several seafarers gathered in preparation to run a foot race, 'Melby' Balaclava, Christmas day, 1907. Melby was the house of Mr William Peter Peterson, a station owner and merchant. The house was named after his birthplace, a small town in the Shetlands, Scotland. William Peterson had married Louisa Eliza, the sister of Frederick Sargood,who he was in business with. She died in 1867 and he remarried to Emma Paulin Hutchinson, she is the Mrs Peterson who welcomed the seamen during picnics on the ground of Melby on several occasions in 1914, 1916, 1917 and 1919 (or 1918) generally for Boxing Day.
