Photograph - Schoolmaster's house, Pakington Street [Kew], c. 1965
This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. Photograph, Ken Hall, Victorian home at 215 Union Road, Surrey Hills, Original: 1920; copy by Ken Hall: 1980s
Built in 1888, which was 5 years before water reticulation came to Surrey Hills. It originally relied on rainwater and a well (still in existence in 2009) was located near the back door. From 1921 this was the home of Mr Natale and Mrs Ethel May Cerini and their family. It remained in the family until it was sold in May 2015. The Cerinis had 2 daughters - Jocelyn Francesca and Lynette Lorraine . The house passed to Jocelyn after her parents' deaths. Mr Cerini named the house after a property in NSW called 'Goonoogoonoo' where he had worked. It had been named 'Montiere' at a previous time. Natale was an accountant and very active in community affairs, especially after his retirement. The house was originally on a double block. [Additional information: Ken Hall - 2/12/2009] The first owner was A Embling, followed by Mrs L A Campbell. [Ref: Alan Holt property register] A Embling was most likely Austin Henry Chinnock Embling (1867, Ballarat East - 2 OCT 1900), eldest son of Dr Dr William and Elizabeth Embling (née Austin). His wife was Sybil Mary Mildred (MS: Edlin), born in Adelaide, whom Austin Embling married in 1898. Black and white photo of a Victorian style house with 3 brick chimneys, a slated roof and a verandah on 2 sides. It has iron lacework and the roof is striped corrugated iron. It sits behind a picket fence. The spire of Surrey College can be seen behind the trees at the rear of the house. In the street is an electric light pole and an immature tree within a picket protection guard.Paper type-written tags mounted at the bottom of the photo - LHS: " Built 1888"; RHS: "215 Union Road in 1920 / Surrey College can be / seen behind the trees."houses, victorian style, goonoogoonoo, surrey college, street trees, natale cerini, kenneth tudor hall, ken hall, jocelyn cerini, jocelyn hall, ethel may swan, ethel swan, ethel cerini, jocelyn francesca cerini, natale benjamin cerini, natale benjamin john andrea cerini, ethel may cerini, lynette lorraine cerini, lynette lorraine lazarus, austin embling, austin henry chinnock embling, sybil mary embling, sybil mary edlin, sybil mary mildred, montiere, goonoo goonoo, lynette cerini -

The house was built for and owned by James Dickson, a stock agent, until his death in 1880. Although on a much reduced parcel of land, Halstead is one of the few remaining remnants of Caulfield when it was an area of mansion houses occupied by town residing squatters, professional and business men. It is important for its place in the socio-economic history of south eastern suburban Melbourne, the inland pattern of development stretching from Malvern through Murrumbeena. Architecturally the single storey building displays a history of alteration and addition. Its main front presents with a single storey cast iron verandah across the full width, including the two pavilion wings at each end. Located towards the rear on the Halstead Street side is the substantial three storey tower with its Mansard roof and cast-iron balustrade which makes the house clearly visible from Halstead Street and Bambra Road. Because of internal alteration the importance of the building relates to the exterior only of the main house. Functional object - Note book, Webb Bros, Early 20th century
This little slate notebook was given by Webb Brothers to their customers as an advertising tool. The Webb Brothers Company a large manufacturing firm in Lava Street, Warrnambool, making windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers, and oil engines. They were also engineers, brassfounders and wholesale tinsmiths and plumbers. Motor car work became a speciality in the 1920s. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne (Bayswater) and the name of the firm became Presha Engineering Company. This notebook is of some interest as it was provided by Webb Brothers, an important company in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an example of the advertising techniques used by business houses at that time and an interesting example of the use of a slate pencil and slate pages as a recording mechanism. This is a brown leather notebook with three pages of slate material making eight spaces for recording notes. Notes recorded in slate can be rubbed out and the space used again. The slate pencil container is on the side of the notebook but the pencil is missing. The cover is mottled with creamy-yellow lines. The pages are edged in red and there is scribble on some pages. Front page of notebook: ‘Before purchasing talk to Webb Bros. & Co., Windmill Makers, Engineers, Ironworkers etc. Lava Street, Warrnambool ‘Phone 27, Made in Germany’ Scribble on first page ‘Wanted known’ webb brothers, warrnambool, brassfounders -

A check of the electoral rolls points to this being the home of Frederick Harry Percival Lamble, labourer, born in Collingwood. He and his family continued to live at 87 Essex Road until his death in 1968 and his occupation is consistently given as labourer. His wife Bessie Louisa Woods died in 1957.Black and white photo taken from the street of an Edwardian style timber house with 2 chimneys, one of which looks like a kitchen or laundry chimney. The house stands behind a white wooden picket fence in a mature garden which conceals the bull-nose verandah. The house appears to have a slate roof with galvanised capping. To the left can be seen the roofs of houses in Durham Road.timber houses, edwardian style, essex road, lamble family, durham road, bessie ethel lamble, bessie ethel smith -

Dark green covered book with gold edging front and back and seven horizontal lines on the spine. On front cover: buff sticker, with Bendigo Water Works, Crusoe Reservoir and others, contracts 1870 - 1874 written in cursive script. Later writing 'from Mrs. H. Strickland, Bungoona, Currie, King Island'. Written inside is: Presented to Bendigo Historical Society by Mrs A Strickland, Bungoona, Currie, King Island. Also the Historical Society Stamp. The next page has three newspaper cuttings. The first is 'The Victorian Waterworks'. It has costings for contracts for water supply, amounts which will supply water from the Coliban to the Castlemaine and Sandhurst districts, and if the Government should purchase the Bendigo Waterworks, and to construct the Upper Coliban reservoir, additional expenditure may be required. (from Daily Telegraph - 1868). The second is some information on The Yan Yean Aqueduct. The third is a letter to the Editor of the Argus from Joseph Brady, dated August 2, 1870, in reference to repairing the leak in the outlet tunnel of the Malmsbury Reservoir. He says the repair of the tunnel was not essential and is unnecessary and 2nd. If the bank was cut through and restored, for years the bank would not be safe, as the earth used in the restoration would require time to subside and unite with the old work. He hopes the embankment would be allowed to stand intact.civil engineering, water supply, coliban, bendigo water works - crusoe reservoir and other contracts 1870 to 1874, mrs a strictland, royal historical society of victoria bendigo branch, coliban scheme, upper coliban reservoir, daily telegraph 1868, yan yean aqueduct, age, argus 2/8/1870, malmsbury reservoir, joseph brady, charles cook, fishburn morton & kennedy, bernard ward & co, the fulton foundry co ltd, james mcewan & co, laylands foundry co, melbourne sewers & water supply, c w gore, crusoe office, john mcilwraith, edward chandler, ia-s miller & co, robison br & co, guthrie/white hills pottery, peter mcpherson, slater & co, john danks, mclean br & rigg, william beebe, t i connelly, i horwoods -
