Enamel sign - steel back, white enamel background with black letters, "Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board" / A reward of Two pounds will be paid by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board for information leading to the conviction of any person or persons wilfully damaging or interfering with this apparatus." Has the marks from the sign being supported during the enamelling process on the rear. Has damage around each corner and has four small holes in the bottom right hand corner, suggesting another sign may been attached to this one. Functional object - Correspondence Satchel, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), c1940?
Leather Correspondence Satchel with associated materials consisting of: .1 - Leather Correspondence satchel made from brown leather, sewn on the edges with two flaps that could be reversed with two metal plates riveted onto each flap giving the destination of the bag, two metal rings to enable the bag to be secured and a leather carry handle on one side riveted to the bag. Metal plates - brass - "Traffic Manager Head Office" and nickel plated "MMTB Hawthorn". 2 - Padlock and Key - Lockwood Australia brass with steel hasp engraved "MMTB Hawthorn", key stamped "Hawthorn 1220". Received with a brown string noted through the key - retained. 3 - Two steel metal pins used for securing larger correspondence satchel - see article written by Dean Gilbert about the correspondence procedures at MMTB Head Office in 1979 - htd3000i7 where the bag for "Northcote bus depot" (Northcote Bus Workshops) is shown in a photograph. 4 - Paper tag brown card with a reinforcing ring, print item "3/585", headed "Melb & Met Tramways Board", written to go "Essendon" in pencil and "Not Required at Essendon and bag returned". Sign, Yarra Trams, tramcar stop sign - door, mid to late 2000's
Sign - galvanised steel sheet with a baked white enamel paint finish and overlaid with a reflective white and red "Stop" and two walking legs to warn motorists that a pedestrian or passenger was about to leave or board a tramcar. Fitted to the folding doors of Z, A and B class tramcars mid to late 2000's?. It replaced a larger green fold out sign with an image of pedestrians and the word "stop" on it. Sign has not been used. The bottom right hand corner of the Sth Melbourne face has the letters "E.P." indicating the depot that it belonged to - East Preston. Titled "Wheels - 28" Wrought Steel - 1948 Rolling - Contract No. 1380", dated 24 September 1951, prepared by the MMTB Testing Department, Report No. W4/1/287. Gives details of the extensive testing done on a batch of wheels rolled by Commonwealth Steel Company Newcastle, approx. 450 wheels had been ordered. Includes details of manufacture, testing, chemical analysis, dimensional check, hardness and service details. Used from South Melbourne depot in the time recording Bundy clocks that were located around the MMTB system. The key number related to the driver's shift number. The reference has details of the manufacturing of these clocks and the companies involved. .2 - as above, but for Kew Depot, No. 116. Rail used by The North Melbourne and Essendon Tramways and Lighting Co. at their Essendon Depot. Based on item 2566, originally rolled by Carnegie Steel in Pittsburg. The reference link provides the history of the company. Section taken from No. 13 road July 2005. Has rolling date welded onto one side, with location and date written in yellow paint on the foot of the rail.Yields information about the type of rail used in 1906 at Essendon Tram depot.Section of rail recovered from Essendon Tram depot relay with "1906" welded to one side. Has a hole on the underside cut using an oxy-acetylene torch for a bolt possibly to secure the rail. Has been sawn from a salvaged section of rail. Sign - Piece of sheet steel folded to give an upstand or method of attachment to a pole, enamelled with red, white and black paint for use at tram stops. Small red band at top, white band with letters "HAIL CARS HERE" and small red band underneath, on both sides to indicate to drivers a non-compulsory stop. Same sign used for same purpose in Ballarat. Model tram wheel set for an articulated tram made by The Met for their model tram at the Royal Show Melbourne c1985. Two sets of heavy duty electric motor, geared to two sets of four wheel bogies and one unmotorised bogie with a centre pins, washer and split pin that secured the articulated section of the tram. Functional object - Tramcar component, Tramcar component - possibly locking key, undated
Tramcar component - possibly locking key - made from two pieces of cut steel and welded together and finished. A known unknown! Kym Smith advised - "11/6/2020 - It looks familiar, but I can’t recall exactly. I think is used as a locking pin to hold an internal panel in place, possibly the internal panels/frames that are on the interior side of the sliding doors, with the pin going through the top sill into the internal frame?" and 13/6 " I remember somewhere seeing a panel that has pins in the bottom that locate in holes in the floor, then the panel is pushed into place and the securing/locking pin used to hold it in place, with the panel having a square saddle that the pin goes through.
