On August 23rd, 1949, S. S. TIME was on voyage from Sydney to Melbourne with a cargo of sugar (3,000 tons), timber, general cargo and coal, when she was wrecked on Corsair Rock, entrance of Port Philip Bay. The Australian Red Ensign is the official flag to be flown at sea by Australian registered merchant ships. The S.S. Time was a land mark vessel in Queenscliff and surrounding areas from August 23rd, 1949, when it was wrecked on Corsair Rock in the entrance of Port Philip Bay until the early 60s when it broke up in a storm. 1879 - The Argus, Friday 11 July 1879, page 4. The Kew Borough Council having decided to initiate a fire brigade, invited volunteers to send in their names. About 40 complied with the invitation and met at the Town-hall to choose 12 of their number to form the brigade. The 12 elected then chose their officers as follows :— Councillor Gray, captain ; Mr. Thomas Greenhill, foreman ; and Mr. H. Loxton, secretary. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. The brigade now possesses a reel and 500ft. of hose, and a shed is being erected in Little Walpole-street for a station. On returning they were met at the station and escorted to Kew, preceded by the Borough banner. Certificate awarded to the Kew Volunteer Fire Brigade as an award for winning 'the best average time' in competition at Sandhurst. Surrounding the team's photo are a series of individual oval named portraits of the team. This version of the certificate, (there is two in the collection) is unframed and has a badly torn mount. On November 25, 2005 the Kodak Carols by Candlelight launch was held in the browsing library at Kooyong with a large number of staff and guests in attendance. Speeches were made by Gerard Menses, Graeme Innes, Greg McKibbin, Marjorie West and Marina Prior. The crowd got to open Christmas crackers and hear some songs from Marina Prior before a cake was cut and shared. Afterwards everyone headed outside for the burying of the time capsule by Jarryd Clifford and Reuben Ryan, in the garden outside the cafe. Charles Henry (Harry) McQueen (1910-1994) married Olive May Graham in 1935. He was a butcher by trade (McQueen's Butchers, Castlemaine). He was a pioneer of accordion dance music and was mentored by Billy McGlashan. He played by ear and his preferred instrument was a Mezon Grand Organ in the key of A. He played old time waltzes, bush dances and Scottish reels. He was well known for his double and triple right hand fingering.
