The Gladstone bag was first developed in the mid 19th century and was named after British politician William Gladstone, a four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdon. Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. The bag and contents are a unique time capsule of the type of instruments and pharmaceuticals used in the inter-war period.Leather gladstone bag with leather handle and leather strap. These two cards have been sent In 1929 by two early Warrnambool amateur radio persons to William (Bill) Douglas, an amateur radio person with the call sign, VK3GA. The cards are QSL cards, sent as a result of radio contacts being made between two amateur radio persons. Bill Douglas (1898-1986) was a Victorian schoolteacher who was the first licensed amateur radio person in the Otway Ranges district. He was licensed in January 1929 and these cards refer to radio contacts in the July of that year. The cards do not feature the call signs of the contacts but were standard cards used by amateur radio people who did not have personalised cards at the time,. One card was sent by J.F. Anderson (VK3WN) whose address at the time was 100 Foster Street, Warrnambool. He was possibly connected to the family of James and Jane Anderson who lived for some time in Foster Street but later went farming in the Nullawarre district. The other card was sent by W. Brown of 23 Mackay Crescent South Warrnambool (call sign unknown). No information has been found on this person.These two cards are of some importance as they are very early examples of amateur radio operations in Warrnambool. .1 A rectangular card, very faded and torn at edges. This book is a 19th Century treatise on aids to navigation. It belonged to John Cowtan who held land near the Cassady's Bridge area in Caramut Road today (he was related to the Cassady family) and who is mainly important in the history of Port Fairy. Captain John Cowtan was a ship's master for John Griffiths and a Launceston entrepreneur and ship owner between 1839 and 1844. In 1847 he went into partnership with John Bland, establishing a merchant's business with riverside buildings at the Port Fairy wharf. He left Port Fairy in the 1860s. The date of John Cowtan's signature in this book is 1849 (certainly a very early one in our history) and inside the front cover he has written notes about the local weather, mainly as it affected sailing conditions in late 1849 and early 1850. This is a programme, produced in-house for the Annual Display in 1955 of the Warrnambool Wesley Girls’ Gymnasium Club. It shows that the instructress was Mrs V. Last and the pianist, Mrs B. Utting. There were 29 items in the display with the performers in various age groups. Gymnasium Clubs for both boys and girls, organized by the Warrnambool Methodist Church, were well-established in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It is not known when these clubs ceased to operate but church youth clubs of various kinds continue to operate and gymnastic exercises of some sort would still be one of their activities. The first Wesleyan church service was held in Warrnambool in 1847 and the first chapel was opened in 1851. By the early 1900s the church was known as the Methodist Church and in 1977 after a merger with some other Protestant Churches the church today is known as the Uniting Church with the Warrnambool Uniting Church now located in Koroit Street. This programme is of interest as an example of the type of recreational activity sponsored by churches in the 1950s in Warrnambool. Gymnastic Clubs continue to be a popular activity for youth. This is an Australian radio licence issued in 1962. Radio licences in Australia were subject to a fee payable to the Commonwealth of Australia from 1923 to 1974. The fee in 1962 was £2-15-0 ($5.50). In the 1970s TV and radio licences could be combined at a cost of about £26 ($52). This licence was issued to a member of the Stasinowsky family who resided in Warrnambool. Kiewa Valley Rifle Club belonged to the Australian Rifle Clubs. They were in Military District No. 304 and operated as early as the 1920's. In 1876 an Australian Rifle Team, consisting of shooters from N.S.W. and Victoria, was the first team ever to officially represent Australia in any sport in international competition. In 1885 the first civilian Rifle Club was formed. After 1901 all Rifle Clubs came under army control. This is an early school reader for junior classes. It was used by members of the Giles family at Wangoom State School. This book has the names Robert Giles and Stella Giles. The Giles family lives on the Allansford Road. Wangoom School commenced in 1865 as Wangoom Common School, No. 645. After 1872 the Common School system was abolished and it became Wangoom State School. It is now closed. This book is of interest as an early 20th century example of a school reader used in Victoria. It has no Australian content. It is also of interest as a book used at Wangoom State School by members of the Giles family, early settlers in the Warrnambool area. This is a hard cover book of 190 pages. The cover is black with embossed lettering and ornamentation (much of which is now indecipherable). The front and the back of the book have missing pages. The text contains many black and white illustrations, some of which have been coloured in by hand. Some pages are torn and the spine of the cover is torn at the top. This book belonged to Evan Jones, a plasterer and stone mason from Warrnambool (born 1865). He and the Rev. Norman Crawford, the Curate at Christ Church, Warrnambool, began the first Boy Scout group in Warrnambool, the 1st Warrnambool Troop. When Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout movement, visited Melbourne he presented Evan Jones with his scouting medal. The Boy Scout movement has been active in Warrnambool for over 100 years and currently there are two troops operating in the city - Warrnambool Tooram Scouts and Warrnambool Norfolk Scouts Evan Jones was also a Sergeant in the Warrnambool Garrison Artillery (a Volunteer Corps) and this partly explains his ownership of this book and his interest in military scouting. This book is of minor interest as an example of the type of book available early in the 20th century on military scouting. It is also of interest as a book belonging to Evan Jones, the co-founder of the Boy Scout movement in Warrnambool. This is a small book with a buff-coloured cardboard cover. It has red lettering on the front cover which is partly torn away at the right bottom edge. Many of the pages are also stained and torn away at the edges. The text includes sections on military patrolling in general and a section describing military patrols in the Boer War. There are several lift-out pages of sketches of patrols. This is a 1918 Day Book listing some employees/contractors and the day-to-day tasks undertaken by them. There is a separate page for each employee. The book lists such tasks as ‘carting from the Quarry’, ‘tarring Raglan Parade’, ‘tarring at the Gardens’, ‘screening Liebig Street’, ‘working at the Ladies’ Baths’ and ‘general patching’. The names of the employees/contractors include Niven, Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams, Dunne and Gee. The name ‘McKenzie’ on the first page is the only clue to the identity of the employer/overseer and so far his identity has not been established. The jobs listed suggest that he was either an employee of the Warrnambool Council in the Public Works area or a contractor hired to do the same sort of work. This note book is of great interest as it lists workers and the jobs covered by them in 1918 in Warrnambool and it will be of greater significance when the identity of McKenzie is established.This is a note book with ruled blue and red lines. This is an original letter written by Peter Adam to Edward Vidler in 1907. Peter Adam was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool district and the letter records his life beginning with his arrival in 1854 and concluding with his connection with the Kinnear family who acquired the historic property of Allandale in 1906. The letter also refers to the sending of a photograph and a sum of money for the right to have the photograph included on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honor Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress league and Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures in 1907 and he proposed producing a Pioneer Honour Board as part of Warrnambool’s 60th anniversary celebrations. He contacted many of the pioneers or their families and asked for a photograph, a fee and a biography and had the Boadrd made. For many reasons, including financial ones, the Pioneer Honour Board was not seen by the Warrnambool public until the 1920s but today it is one of Warrnambool’s great treasures. This letter is original and is of the utmost importance as it gives personal information about the life of Peter Adam, a person on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honour Board and it refers to the submission of a photograph for placement on the board. This is one of only two letters that we know of that refers to the sending of a photograph and the fee charged for its inclusion on the Pioneer Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, is important in Warrnambool’s history as the person most responsible for producing the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board, one of Warrnambool’s historical treasures. Pages from a scrapbook belonging to Heather Jenkins (nee Cone) who lived as a child in the Police Residence at 728 Main Road, Eltham from 1911 to the early 1920s.Heather McKnight Jenkins (nee Cone) was born 1911, possibly at the Eltham Police Residence and spent her childhood growing up in the Police Residence. Heather was the daughter of John Thomas Cone, Police Constable, and Charlotte Helena Cone (nee Black) who had married in 1906. Constable Cone was transferred to Eltham Police Station from Lauriston (near Kyneton) in May 1911. He retired from the force around September 1922 most likely as a result of significant health concerns experienced earlier that year from 22 April when he was hospitalised. He died 5 October 1922 at Maria Street at age 60 leaving behind a widow and two daughters; his son having pre-deceased him as a result of effects of the war. He is buried in Melbourne General Cemetery . In his probate it states that he owned a piece of land 200 links frontage to Maria Street and a depth of 241 links. It is believed that this is the land opposite the Police Station which Heather Jenkins referred to as being owned by her father and where he agisted the Police horses. Heather, her sister and mother Charlotte remained in Eltham until at least the 1924 Electoral Roll where Charlotte was listed as Home Duties however by 1925 she was listed at 229 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, occupation, Registrar of Births. In the 1934 (and 1936) Electoral Roll, Heather was a Clerk and her mother Charlotte was the Registrar of Births. in 1952 following her mother’s death she made application for Grant of Probate. Heather remains listed in the 1954 Electoral Roll at 13 Ashburton Road under her maiden name Cone however by the 1963 Electoral Roll she is listed at the same address as Heather McKnight Jenkins long with James Gardiner Jenkins. Neither appear listed in the 1958 Electoral Roll. James Gardiner Jenkins (1892-1975) first wife was Fanny Davison Carrucan (1899-1929), daughter of Denis Carrucan and Jane (nee McAleese). They married in 1925. Fanny died 11 November 1929. In the 1934 Electoral Roll he remained listed at John Street, Eltham, Railway Employee however by 1935 Electoral Roll, James Gardiner Jenkins, Railway Employee, was listed at 229 Glenferrie Road, Malvern and he remained living with Charlotte and Heather Cone when they moved to 13 Ashburton Road, Glen Iris. One of Constable Cone’s first investigations upon arriving in Eltham was the accidental fatal shooting in the head with a pea rifle by young Francis August Capewell, aged 11, of John Sutcliffe Deegan, 14, in Maria Street near the Railway. Constable Cone’s replacement was Constable William Charles Sargeant who commenced in charge of the Eltham Police Station from Thursday, 10 August 1922. Constable William Charles Sargeant, and his wife Elizabeth Agnes Sargeant were based at the Eltham Police Station until his transfer to the Police Station in Burwood Road, Hawthorn. He retired at Hawthorn Police Station in 1931, described by Hawthorn Council in 1927 as in a disgraceful condition and unfit for human habitation (Kathryn Griffin family tree – Ancestry) whereupon they moved to 28 Saunders Street, Coburg. Elizabeth died 16 July 1936 in Fitzroy. William then moved to 6 Queen Street Coburg in 1936 and then 1 Queen Street in 1942 where he died 7 August 1944. He is buried at Fawkner Cemetery. This document is a speech titled "Empire Day 1933. A message to the children at Olinda School from their member". It is signed G H Knox. It was written by Sir George Hodges Knox and read to the children at Olinda School as part of the Empire Day celebrations in 1933. Sir George Hodges Knox (1885-1960) was a veteran of WW1 and was elected to the Ferntree Gully Shire Council in 1922. He held this post until 1927.The City Of Knox is named after him. He won the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat for Upper Yarra in 1927 for the Nationalist Party. He became Speaker for the Victorian Parliament in 1942 and remained there until 1947. Between 1945 and his death in 1960 he held the seat of Scoresby. He was knighted in 1945. The celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24 was renamed Empire Day in 1903 after her death in 1901. Empire Day was observed in state schools from 1905 with a program of addresses, pageants and patriotic songs, with children swearing allegiance to King and Empire with a loyal declaration. The last celebration of Empire Day in Australia took place in 1958.
