They are the handwritten history of Methodism in Warrnambool (produced in the 1930s?) by John Ward, and early settler, North Warrnambool shopkeeper and an ex-councillor and mayor. The books contain over 100 original photographs of people connected to the Methodist Church, both clerical and lay, including women, and other Warrnambool photographs. There is also much written material on all the people connected to the church. The books were given to Warrnambool & District Historical Society Inc in March 2013 by the Uniting Church together with DVD with a digital copy of the photographs and a typed copy of the writings. This is the program of the 2014-5 exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery, ‘From the Sacred to the Profane – The Challenges and Possibilities of Renaissance Art’. This exhibition was a joint project between the National Gallery of Victoria and the Warrnambool Art Gallery and was officially opened in December 2014 by the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Tony Ellwood. This program is of interest as a souvenir of an exhibition in Warrnambool that was an important one as it featured historical and valuable works of art from the National Gallery of Victoria. The Flagstaff Beacon was printed weekly from 14th July 1979 to 5th October 1979. The paper was published in Warrnambool by Trevor Alan Mackay (Ennisclay Pty Ltd) and the address was listed as 104 Liebig Street with the Classified Department at 148 Fairy Street. The name of this paper was a reference to the two operating lighthouses on Flagstaff Hill in Warrnambool. The Flagstaff Beacon was delivered free to Warrnambool householders but extra copies could be obtained for 20 cents a copy. The paper produced the usual newspaper material – current news, sport, real estate, movies, women’s news, motoring, advertisements etc. In August 1979 the Flagstaff Beacon offered colour reproductions of any photographs appearing in the paper. This was described as the first service of its kind to be offered in Victoria. These newspapers are of considerable interest as they are some of the few surviving copies of the 1979 Warrnambool paper, The Flagstaff Beacon. They also are of historical interest because of their news items and their advertisements. These are 13 copies of the Warrnambool newspaper, The Flagstaff Beacon. The newspapers are printed in black and white with a masthead featuring a colour – mainly red and orange. The masthead also has an image of a lighthouse, perhaps the Upper Lighthouse at Warrnambool. These are three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’, a publication issued in 1910 by the Victorian Government containing information and photographs of places in Victoria. There are fifteen pages describing Warrnambool. One copy belonged to Bert and Henri Worland. It is presumed that Bert was the older brother of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Henri Worland was one of Warrnambool’s most important historians and was responsible for collecting much of the historical material that is now in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. He also wrote about Warrnambol’s history and was well-known in the 1940s for his 3YB radio broadcasts about Warrnambool’s history. His brother Albert was an insurance agent in Warrnambool. This book is of considerable importance as the material on Warrnambool and district covering the year 1910 is of great interest to historians today and is much used. There is a wealth of information on many Warrnambool businesses at that time. The connection with the Worland family is also of interest. These three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’ contain information on Victoria early in the 20th century and contain printed text, many black and white photographs and illustrations and advertisements for Victorian businesses. .1 A hard cover book with a dark blue cover and a pasted brown covering on the front and back cover. ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ was written and published in 1907 by Edward Vidler. It is a seminal work on Warrnambool’s history. It is noted for its historical accuracy, its complementary value to Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887 and its presentation of historically important early photographs. Edward Vidler, born in England, was a writer, historian, journalist, editor and publisher. He was in the Geelong area in the 1880s where he produced a commemorative volume on that city. He was in Warrnambool in the early 1900s where he produced his book ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. He also organized the establishment of the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board with the portraits of 204 pioneer men from the area. John Ward was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool area. He was a Councillor (1880 to 1911) and Mayor and had a shop at the corner of Jamieson Street and Canterbury Road. He was an historian and wrote articles on aspects of early Warrnambool and a comprehensive history of Methodism in Warrnambool. Thomas Wicking was a noted Warrnambool historian in the second half of the 20th century. These two copies are most significant. Originals of this book are rare and the book is of key importance in the recording of Warrnambool’s history. This book was written by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following in the 19th century, not only in England, but throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts, costing one penny, and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. These books were sub-titled ‘Plain Talk for Plain People’ with the copy we have being the second in the series labelled ‘140th thousand’ and published in 1892, the year of Spurgeon’s death. It appears that Spurgeon’s books were in many a home in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This book is of great interest as one which was familiar to many residents of Warrnambool and district in the 19th century. Charles Spurgeon was apparently widely known to Warrnambool residents in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons from time to time and reported at length his final illness and death. The contents of this display case are known as Princess Mary’s Christmas Fund 1914. In October 1914 Princess Mary, the 17 year-old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, launched an appeal to raise funds to produce a Christmas present for every person serving in the British and Allied Forces in World War One. The Christmas box was a silver one for officers and a brass one for other ranks. The box usually contained a packet of cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary but some boxes contained confectionery, notebooks, pencils etc. By Christmas 1914 200,000 boxes had been distributed but it took until 1920 to dispose of the 2,500,000 boxes that were produced. Many of the boxes given to Australian servicemen have survived but few contain any or all of the contents. It is not known to whom this box was sent. This box and its contents are of great interest as an important memento of Australian participation in World War One. This is a rectangular brass tin and its contents – two yellow cardboard boxes which originally held cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary. The five items are displayed within a rectangular wooden box with a removable glass top. The brass tin is embossed with an image in the centre of Princess Mary surrounded by a laurel wreath. The embossing includes the letter ‘M’ (twice) and the names of some of the allies of Britain in World War One. It contains articles on agriculture in Victoria, including the dairying industry in the Western District. This journal is of some interest because of the photographs and information on dairying in the Western District in the early 20th century, including dairy inspection, milking controls in Koroit, prize-winning cows at Koroit and dairy bacteriology. This is a soft cover booklet of 102 pages - pages 350 to 452 of Part 4 of a journal published regularly (monthly?). The back cover is missing. The front cover is black and white and has an inset of a photograph showing wheat harvesting. This journal produced in 1905 is of considerable interest because it has an article on the inspection of the Grasmere Butter Factory and the resultant erection of a new building on the site. This book was written and produced by Edward Vidler, Born in England, Edward Vider, a writer, publisher, journalist and editor, was in Geelong in the 1880s where he produce a commemorative volume of that city. In Warrnambool in the early 1900s Vidler was Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures and of the Warrnambool and District Progress League. In 1907 he produced ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. In 1907 he also organized the project that produced the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. Later Vidler lived in Melbourne where he edited magazines and published his own and other writings. He was interested in the promotion of the arts and was a keen naturalist. He was a foundation member of the group that established the Maranoa Native Gardens in Balwyn.These books are of the utmost significance as ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is a seminal work in the history of the Warrnambool – second only in importance to Richard Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887. ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is noted for the accuracy of Vidler’s research, its complementary value to Osborne’s history and its presentation of historically valuable material that might otherwise be lost. This book was given to Henry Huntingdon Smith in 1918 by a grateful sister of a soldier killed in World War One. Private Percy Palmer was listed as coming from the Warrnambool area even though his enlistment place was given as Bannockburn. H.H.Smith (1857-1941) is an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. He had a bakery business at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets. He was a Warrnambool Councillor and Mayor, a Hospital Committee member for 39 years, a Methodist church office-bearer and an active worker for the welfare of local returned soldiers. It was said that he greeted every returning soldier at the Warrnambool Railway Station. Mrs Sharpe was one of those who benefited from his solicitude and kindness. This is book is of antiquarian interest but more importantly it is a lovely memento of Henry Smith’s untiring concern for local soldiers returning from World War One and for their family members. This is a hard cover book of 38 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering and gold ornamentation on the front and back covers. There are two sepia-coloured photographs of Melbourne at the front of the book and two blue stamps of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at the front and the back of the book. This cook book has been published by the Friends of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village Inc. This group do volunteer work at Flagstaff Hill, publicize the activities and historical collection at the Village and raise funds to carry out improvements and new installations. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village was established in 1975, initially as a private venture sponsored by a group of businessmen in Warrnambool but it was later taken over by the Warrnambool City Council. It operates as an historical park and a tourist venture every day of the year except Christmas Day and has a night Sound and Light Show called ‘Shipwrecked’. The historical collection at the Village features many important shipwreck relics from the area, with the most important being the ‘Loch Ard’ ceramic peacock. The cook book is a tribute to the local women of the past and there are many recipes collected from the ‘Grannies’ of yesteryear. The tea rooms at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village are called ‘Stella Maris’ (Latin for ‘Star of the Sea’) and call to mind both the maritime heritage of the area and the name of the Australian Catholic Missions to Seamen which still operates. This book is of interest as a product of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. It has been edited by John Lindsay who was one of the founders of Flagstaff Hill in 1975 and is today a Life Member and Helen Sheedy who has also been connected with the administration of the Village in the past. Joseph Wilder, a professional photographer, came to Warrnambool in 1860 and took a series of photographs, two of which survive today. One was of the local Volunteer Corps and the other was a series of photographs taken from Cannon Hill showing Merri Street and the town and buildings beyond. It seems that copies of these last-mentioned photographs were framed to produce a large panoramic view of 1860 Warrnambool and one of these was given to the old Warrnambool Museum in the 1880s by James Astley Bromfield. He had established a chemist’s shop in Warrnambool in 1854 and showed his interest in the history of the young town by producing a map in 1856 showing the first landowners, a seminal resource today for historians. He again demonstrated this interest when he included the names of the people and places in the 1860 photograph he gave to the museum in the 1880s. The frame fragment was found amongst the collection of items from the old Museum at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and brought to the Historical Society to accompany the original series of photographs. Bromfield went to live in Melbourne in the 1880s. It is presumed that the plastic cover has been placed on the frame fragment at a much later date than the 1880s.This frame fragment is interesting and very important for several reasons:- 1. It is one demonstration of the interest that James Astley Bromfield had in local history 2. It came from the old Warrnambool Museum and shows how that institution kept items of historical interest 3. It gives us the names of the people and places in the Joseph Wilder photographs of 1860 that placed together form a panorama that reveals what a major section of Warrnambool looked like only 13 years after its foundation. The list enables us to correctly identify the early places and people and so is invaluable for research purposes 4. It links a Museum exhibit of the 1880s with the original 1860 photographs which are held by the Historical Society This is a piece of wood broken from a frame containing a photograph. This is a photograph of a painting by the noted artist George Webb (1861-1949). Webb was best known for his portraits of civic dignitaries in Melbourne and Adelaide but he also produced many landscapes and seascapes. Some of these feature Warrnambool landmarks as he married, in the late 1890s, Christina Lake, the step-daughter of George Rolfe who owned the property known as ‘Lyndoch’, near the mouth of the Hopkins River. Webb painted the early cottages at ‘Old Lyndoch’ using a photograph taken some time earlier. The painting was given to Dick Allan, the chauffeur in the employ of Florence Lake, Christina’s sister. Florence Lake owned and resided at Lyndoch after her parents’ death. Dick Allan’s son, living in Tasmania, acquired the painting and Les O’Callaghan obtained the photograph of the painting from him. Although this is only a photograph of an original painting, it is of some considerable importance as the painting has great historical significance and this is the only representation we have of it. The man in the photograph represents George Rolfe and the story of Rolfe and his ownership and development of the property of Lyndoch is an important one in Warrnambool’s history. The original by George Webb is also an important work of art in its own right.This is a colour photograph of a painting. The frame of the original painting can be seen at the bottom of the photograph. The photograph is in on old frame which has two wooden edgings with the outer one having an ornate gold plaster edging and an inner one with a gold velvet insert next to the glass. The ornate gold plaster has a piece missing near the top left hand corner. The photograph is set into a gold-coloured wooden frame inside the glass. The photograph is mounted onto cardboard and covered with cardboard at the back with a small piece of wood attached (from the original frame). This is a brochure commemorating the arrival in Australia of John and Isabella McLeod and the unveiling of a plaque at the Immigrants Wall in Portland in 2015. The Immigrants Wall is located in Bentinck Street in Portland, Victoria and was a Glenelg Shire Bicentenary Project to enable descendants of those who first set foot on Australian soil at Portland to commemorate this event by placing a memorial plaque on the wall. John and Isabella McLeod were two of these immigrants to come to Portland in 1854. This is the program for the exhibitions and activities conducted by the Art Gallery of Ballarat in the winter of 2015. It includes the exhibition of the works of James Meek, of particular interest to Warrnambool as Meek was resident there for a number of years in the 19th century. The Ballarat Art Gallery is the largest and oldest regional art gallery in Australia, being established in 1884. The booklet is of interest as it shows the depth and variety of exhibitions and activities held at a regional art gallery. It includes the exhibition of the works of James Meek, a 19th resident of Warrnambool where he was well-known as a fishing company operator, a punt operator, a fisherman, a writer and lecturer and a gold prospector in the Otway Ranges. His calligraphy works are of great interest, both artistically and historically and one of his works belonging to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society was loaned to Ballarat for this exhibition. This is a booklet of 32 pages containing the program of the Art Gallery of Ballarat for Winter 2015. This is a 2013 election leaflet for Dan Tehan, the Federal Member for Wannon (Liberal Party). Wannon electorate is in the south west of Victoria and was one of the original seats established in 1900 for the first Federal Government. Warrnambool is in the Wannon Electorate. Dan Tehan won the seat in 2010 for the Liberal Party and has held it ever since. This is a leaflet of four pages and a cover. The printed material is multi-coloured with colour photographs, a map of the electorate and election statements and promises. This book contains the story of the Australian Companies of the Imperial Camel Corps in the First World War. The authors are George and Edmee Langley. George Langley (1891-1972) was the principal of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He and his wife Edmee were prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool during that time. George Langley served with distinction in both World Wars and rose to the rank of Brigadier in 1944. He intended writing the history of the Australian Camel Corps but died before he could complete the work. Edmee Langley, herself a talented journalist and writer, used her husband’s collection of letters, diaries and writings to publish Sand, Sweat and Camels.This book is of interest as it was written by George and Edmee Langley who were important Warrnambool residents in the 1920s and 30s. Extracts from Edmee’s memoirs of her time in Warrnambool are held by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a soft cover book of 188 pages. It has a brown cover with white and yellow lettering and, on the front cover, a colour image of several men riding camels. The back cover has blurbs on the two pieces of writing in the book. The book contains many black and white photographs. This is the autobiography of Jill Suggett, born 1940, the daughter of Lindsay and Enid Suggett of Warrnambool. She suffered from cerebral palsy and, in later life, bi-polar disorder. Despite this she lived a rich and active life, becoming a librarian and publishing several books. She was a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and was the newsletter editor for the Society from 1968 to 1976 and was a Life Member of the Society. This book is of interest as it is the autobiography of Jill Suggett, a life member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society (Jill is now deceased). This is a soft cover book of 120 pages. The cover has a black background and a black, grey and white image of a girl tumbling into a cellar. The lettering on the front cover is white and on the spine it is black. On the back cover there is a printed extract from the Foreword. The book has a Foreword, 21 chapters and several black and white photographs. This booklet is of high significance as it contains much valuable information on Warrnambool and district for the year 1912. It is a very important resource tool for those studying and writing the history of Warrnambool and district. This copy has no known original owner but came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Langi Morgala Museum in Ararat This is a soft cover booklet of 116 pages with several pages of advertisements at the front and the back of the book. This is an ash tray sold to tourists as a souvenir of a visit to Warrnambool. It would have been relatively cheap to buy. Souvenirs such as this were mass-produced for the tourist market and a relevant photograph inserted on the base to suit the town or settlement where they were sold. As cigarette-smoking is no longer so socially acceptable, items such as this one are no longer sold as tourist souvenirs. This item is of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold to tourists in Australia in the first half of the 20th century, probably in the 1940s or 1950s. It is of particular local interest because it contains a photograph of Warrnambool during that time. This is a souvenir tin ash tray circular in shape. It has a colour photograph of Warrnambool inserted into the base of the dish (Flagstaff Hill showing part of the fortifications, the Lower Lighthouse, a camping ground and Warrnambool Bay). This ledger contains original Warrnambool Standard newspaper cuttings of the eleven articles written by Henri Worland on the early history of Warrnambool. The subject matter includes the Post and Telegraph Office, Punts over the Merri and Hopkins Rivers, Transport in the Early Days, Early Exploration, Minjah Station and the History of the Breakwater. Henri Worland (1883-1972) was Warrnambool’s most important 20th century local historian. He was the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949 and his intense interest in Warrnambool’s history led him to collect and preserve a great amount of local history material. He wrote extensively on Warrnambool’s history and gave talks on the local radio station over a period of many years.These newspaper cuttings are of interest as examples of the many local history articles written by the important Warrnambool historian Henri Worland. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has a collection of Worland’s original writings in his own handwriting. This is a ledger book with a brown-coloured cover with red binding. There is a label pasted on to the front cover with black printing on it. The ledger has indented alphabet tabs and the pages are ruled with red lines for ledger purposes but these have not been used. The ledger has been used to paste in original cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper (Henri Worland articles from the 1940s). One page contains two copies of old photographs.
