Launch of Eureka Reminiscences, a publication by Ballarat Heritage Services. This book, a collection of memories about Eureka, was researched, created and printed by Ballarat Heritage Services. On the 50th anniversary of Eureka in 1904, men and women wrote about their experiences during the Eureka Rebellion on 3 December 1854. The Macclesfield State School opened in 1904. This is a photograph is of a group event at the school c1920s. This and other photographs and postcards came from the estate of David Moyle (1938-2015) who was a police officer in Emerald during late 1960s-early 1970s, and subsequently at Belgrave in the early 1980s. Guyetts and Sons is a family business that began providing funeral services in Warrnambool and South West Victoria in 1905. Today in 2019 the business is still in operation as Guyetts Funerals Warrnambool. This wooden coffin was used as a display model in the 1920s at Guyetts. Its simple six-sided design was an economical choice as it used less wood than the box-shaped coffins. This coffin is an example of coffin design in the 1920s in Warrnambool and South West Victoria. It is historically significant, representing a local business that began in the first decade of the 1900s and is still in operation today.Coffin made of polished wood with pressed, silver coloured metal decorations on top and along sides in several designs. Its shape is similar to the human body; wide at the shoulders and narrow at the feet. It has a six-sided base and a completely removable lid. The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1865 and bonnets were introduced in the 1880s for women officers. These bonnets were worn until the 1960s. The Salvation Army came to Warrnambool in 1887 and was initially based in Raglan Parade before opening a citadel in Lava Street in 1905. In the mid 1960s they purchased the old Congregational Church and Manse at the corner of Lava and Henna Streets.This bonnet is a fine example of the bonnets worn by Salvation Army Officers as part of their uniform. The bonnet is made of black raffia with a brim. It has black and maroon grosgrain ribbbons around the front, sides and back. The maroon ribbon has THE SALVATION ARMY machine printed in gold letters. A grosgrain black strap is attached to the head band to enable the bonnet to be worn securely. The bonnet is lined with black cotton. This handmade pinafore was worn by the donor, Ellen Brown, at her christening in 1905. It was made by Ellen's grandmother, Mrs Beeching, for the first daughter born in the Fagg family. The pinafore was a treasured family heirloom, and was not worn again. It is a rare example of a modest, homemade christening costume. Most costumes were gowns, but this humble pinafore still shows loving attention to detail.The connection between milestone moments and the wearing of a particular garment carries great significance. The christening gown represents the rites of passage: great importance is placed on the clothing, as well as the ceremony.This is a white cotton infant's christening pinafore, round neck with a flounce, sleeveless with a sash attached at the front and tied at the back. Middlesborough , early 1900's. Each section secured with two 20mm (¾”) long, 3mm dia (1/8”) machine screws, countersunk with a slotted head from the rear. All nickel plated on both sides, engraved as to the tramway used on, date of production on the head of the rail, Designing Engineers on the web and the manufacturer on the foot of the rail. Cloth secured with staples and drawing pins on the rear. A Victorian F-class steam locomotive and passenger train at Eltham Railway Station, c.1904 Intending passengers were able to walk down from the Main Road straight onto the railway platform as the station initially only had tracks on the far side. The rail yard and storage shed for heavy goods is across the tracks. The platform shed-like building is best seen in the 1910 and 1912 photographs. The Victorian Railways F class locomotives were built in 1874 (the pattern engine), 1876–77 and 1879–80 by Beyer, Peacock & Company and the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat as 2-4-0 tender locomotives. They were normally used on passenger trains. In 1911 the Victorian Railways decided to convert seven of them into "motor" locomotives. These became 2-4-2 tanks. They kept their numbers 172–184 (evens only). The unrebuilt tender engines were taken off register between 1916 and 1922. The "motors" were taken off register between 1920 and 1929. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.‘Elm Lodge’ had a frontage to Wellington Street and extended to Cotham Road. It was renamed ‘Madford’ in 1874, after its purchase by the pastoralist Arthur Septimus King, the grandson of Philip Gidley King, third Governor of New South Wales. The Alexandra Gardens were developed on the northern section of Madford after the sale of the land to the Borough of Kew in 1905. King’s house, and the remaining garden, was sold to the Catholic Church in 1920, and subsequently developed into ‘St Anthony’s Home for Babies’ in 1922. The organisation relocated to Footscray in 1975, and the building demolished."Madford (formerly Elm Lodge) in Wellington Street Kew during the period when it was St. Anthony's Home for babies (now demolished). The medal was awarded to junior missionary collectors for collecting over £5 for the missionary work of the church during a year. The first year this was achieved the medal was awarded and in subsequent years a bar was awarded. After 10 years a long service badge was also given. The practice started in 1904 with the Wesleyan Methodists by a man called Stanley Sowton so £5 was a large amount in those days.Bronze Maltese cross Junior Methodist Church Distinguished Service Order medal on a dark blue and brown grosgrain ribbon. The Guild of St Stephen is an International Organisation of Altar Servers founded in England in 1904 by Father Hamilton McDonald when he formed a Society of Altar Servers at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in London. In 1934, Pope Pius XI enabled all Guilds of Altar Servers throughout the British Commonwealth to be affiliated with the Archconfraternity at Westminster.
