Book, A. Hilliard Atteridge, The wars of the 'Nineties, 1899
This book was awarded to Mary Lawrence in 1899 for first prize in Roman History. Mary Lawrence enrolled at Clarendon Ladies' College at the age of 14. Siblings enrolled: Janie Elizabeth Lawrence (1893), Jessie McBain Lawrence (1895), Christina Lawrence (1896) and Margaret Adair Lawrence (1900). Mary's father in the original register is listed as Alexander and their residence as Canally Balranald, "Colibau Estate" Redesdale in NSW. Father's occupation is noted as Squatter.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in red cloth with black and gilt illustration on front cover and spine. Foxing on pages, detached spine and pages. Nellie May Matthews received this book prize in 1896 for first prize in bible. Nellie enrolled in Clarendon Ladies' College in April of 1896 (D.O.B. 3/6/1978). In the original registry it states that father's name is George Browning, occupation Ironmonger and the residence as 98 Neil Street Ballarat. Nellie had a sister, Sarah Bertha Matthews (D.O.B 31/12/1883) who enrolled in the school on 8/2/1898.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Reunion outing of former Harbour Lights Guild members. Image names this image are from left to right Unidentified lady, Jesse, Betty, Marjorie Duckett, 2nd from right. The Duckett family had a long term involvement in and Marjorie's commitment to the Mission, was reflected in helping run the Altona Op Shop and later with a substantial donation to the Mission (see other entries for Duckett this database); Sheila Richardson at far right. Post WW2 the word ladies seems to have been eventually dropped and the term Harbour Lights Guild used instead. The Women featured in this image seem to be on a re-union outing. Two confirmed identities are Berenice who appears and provides commentary on her memories as a young woman hosting dances at the Mission between WW2 and 1960 in a documentary produced by Csilla Tsongaray circa 2005. Marjorie Duckett's identity was confirmed by her nephew and in two articles in Ship to Shore newsletter. ( Search this database under the term Duckett for more background). Newspaper cuttings collected from various sources. - Ballarat Courier, The Australian, Warrnambool Standard, The Age, The Standard, The News, Ballarat News, East Gippsland News. The items are from 7 January to 14 December 1989. Many articles relate to the renaming of BCAE. A proposal for the College to merge with another facility was put forward. This became a battle for independence. Letters to the Editor highlighted some of the concerns. The merger proposition was debated between Deakin University in Geelong and Ballarat College of Advanced Education for six months. BCAE became Ballarat University College in 1990. Inscription on plaque: "This Chapel was dedicated on Wednesday 1st August 1934 by Most Reverend Bishop McCarthy DD, Bishop of Sandhurst (Bendigo) for the House of Studies, Novitiate and Retreat Centre of the Society of Jesus (1934-1974) and after sale to the State Government was deconsecrated. It was returned to the catholic community in 2002." Part of a collection of photographs of Loyola College, Grimshaw Street Watsonia, established 1980 on the site of the Loyola Seminary. The College purchased the original building in 2002. Used in Ballarat School of Mines. "The Junior Technical School is provided for the purpose of supplying the universally recognised requirement for a satisfactory Technical Education system, namely, continuity of study between the primary stage of education and the subsequent period of study at a Technical School." The Geelong Gordon Technical College obtained information from Melbourne Junior Technical School that was in its second year of operations. Due to limited space at the College, provision will be for only 50 students. Staff will comprise a Head Master, who will teach English, Civics (History) and Geography. A Mathematical and Science Master who will also have the assistance of the Gordon College Science Master. The Art Master from the Gordon College will take Modelling, Geometry and Drawing.
