Yields information about the 1968 proposals to close both the Ballarat and Bendigo tramway systems by the state government.Series of newspaper clippings adhered to three quarto lined sheets about the 1968 attempt by the Victorian Government to close the Ballarat and Bendigo tramway systems. .1 - "Trams will go from two cities" - The Sun Friday 19/7/1968, about the Government's decision - gives reasons for the closure. .2 - "Protest over tram protest" - The Sun, 28/8/1968 - with a photo of No. 35 and that the Ballarat Save the Trams Committee not supporting a public protest meeting called by tramway employees. Also has cutting about the State cabinet being delayed by a good train breakdown, a Brisbane train strike and that Country considering the Underground is not vital. .3 - "The Country trams stay" - The Sun Thursday 3/10/1968 - about the Legislative Council not approving the motion to scrap the trams, Labor and Country party combined to defeat the motion. Yields information about the Ballarat tramway staff at the time of closure of the SEC operated system. Demonstrate framing of photographs.Framed Black and white photograph, mounted (partly loose) onto heavy card of the SEC Ballarat tram crews shortly before the closure of the tramway system in front of the depot building with three tramcars behind. Has a printed list of all employees or staff underneath. Titled "Ballarat Tramways Employees 1971". Frame - wooden, red stained wood with a painted gold coloured frame, glazed, with a cut cardboard piece on stippled paper. Rear backing sheet - brown leather type printed finish with a fold out section stapled to the rear to enable the photograph to be stood upright. Backing piece has been nailed to the frame. Demonstrates the safety record of the SEC Ballarat depot, has a strong association with the workers and Yields information about their performance and dates.Timber framed box, glass fronted, Masonite back, painted black on the edges and front with a slot on the underside and metal catch screwed to the timber that allowed a preprinted poster to be slid out from the base. The poster titled "Our Safe Working Days Score", provided with secured to the poster, four metal sheets pressed with three rounded edges to allow a paper strip to be slid in from the right hand side and secured. Poster has been preprinted for the SEC Electricity Supply Department". Yields information about the view of the City of Ballaarat in 1968 about the possible replacement of tram service.Report or Submission - 6 Gestener printed foolscap sheets, stapled on left hand side and bound with a blue edging tape titled "Submission to Enquiry into Public Transport Facilities in the Ballarat Urban District by A. W. Nicholson, Mayor of Ballaarat Council". Dated 2 April 1968. Submission looks at the possible closure or the future of the tramway system, the SEC involvement, employment, road surface repairs, financial loss to the SEC, reduction in passengers due to car ownership. Council submitted that the tramway system should be retained and extended and that pensioner concessions should be continued. Notes that at the time 69 men on the trams, 18 at the depot and 8 on the track. If replaced by buses, supported a government owned bus provider rather than private. Has many photographs of the various tramcars associated with relevant text. On front cover, has W7 1010 with green and black banding and price. On page 1 is a map of Melbourne tramways drawn in 1971, but showing abandoned lines as well. Page ii, inside cover, has a list of Traction Publications. Back cover has a end on photograph of SW6 940. Outside of covers is gloss paper. Corrigenda sheet - 85mm sq has been placed inside its own cover and numbered 1803a.
