Photograph - Photo, Aerial view of the Somme
An aerial photo of the Somme in France during World War One. There are coordinates or numbers in some areas. Also labelled are the Johannes and Anvil Wood. Was with 11 other photos of World War One that had been mounted on board for display at Legacy House at some stage. When they were taken off display they were put in the archive cabinets. The founding legatees all served in World War One so these photos would have been of significant places for them. (see 01888 to 01899). From the AWM: Anvil Wood was a small wood to the north of Peronne that marked the centreline of an attack by the 14th Brigade on the morning of 1 September 1918. The northern approaches to Peronne were covered by numerous field and machine-guns, but the leading battalions of the brigade - the 53rd and 54th - pushed their attack home with determination, and sent the German defenders fleeing back to Peronne. The attack opened the way for the 14th Brigade to advance on to Peronne itself and break into the town's northern defences.Photos from World War One that would have been significant to the founding legatees.Sepia photo of the Somme battlefield in France during World War One.world war one, france, somme -

Maitland' was built in 1889 for Thomas Zeplin, who was a Professor of Music. He owned all the land bound by Union Road, Wilson and Montrose Streets and the railway line. 1 Bedford Avenue stayed in family ownership until purchased by Camberwell Council in 1986, initially for a car park. However it was renovated to become part of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. It was opened on 23 November 1990. No 3 Bedford Avenue was built for Thomas Zeplin's daughter and named 'Mervyl' or 'Merryl'. Mrs Brodecky (donor) was the great-granddaughter of Thomas Zeplin. The 2 girls are granddaughters of Thomas Zeplin. Electoral roll information: 1972 & 1977: Albert Vojteck Brodecky, manager, 1 Bedford Avenue. 1977: Ray Nanette Brodecky. There are 2 copies. Sign, Widows of War Protest - City Rally
A newspaper article about a protest by War Widows published 3 July 1947. An article showing more than 1500 people met to demand higher compensation for the loss of their husbands who had died for their country. Mrs J M Vasey received an ovation for her address to the meeting. She was the wife of Major-General Vasey, during the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. This reproduction on display board may have been for an exhibition of Guild memorabilia at some time. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this board, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. Both organisations helped war widows in various ways.A record of the work done by Jessie Vasey and the War Widows Guild.Newspaper article 'Widows of War Protest - City Rally' reproduced on a display board for signage of an exhibit.war widows guild, jessie vasey, wwg -
