Overall, the ship traded for 32 years before it was converted in Spain in 1927 for use as a hulk for carrying coal. ...This photograph of the Monkbarns was taken prior to 1927 before the sailing ship was converted for use as a hulk. The steel-hulled, 3-masted fully rigged ship was built in 1895 by Archibald McMillan & Son at Dumbarton in Scotland. It was 267 feet long, 40.1 feet wide and 23.5 feet deep. In 1914 John Stewart & Co. owned ten sailing vessels, one of which was the Monkbarns, but by the end of the first World War, the fleet had only four vessels survived the war, including the Monkbarns. The Monkbarns traded across the world. Some of the destinations included Port Adelaide, Table Bay in South Africa, Liverpool, Sydney, London and New York. Her last commercial voyage was in 1926. Overall, the ship traded for 32 years before it was converted in Spain in 1927 for use as a hulk for carrying coal. There were several owners of the ship over its lifetime. Caption in lower right hand corner reads: Bridge (at) Main Road Eltham. The long wooden suspension bridge over the Diamond Creek on Main Road at Eltham collapsed during flooding of the Diamond Creek on October 13 and 14, 1923. The original bridge was built around 1840 for the coach road when Cobb & Co.'s coach was the only conveyance between Eltham and Melbourne. Widespread damage was done in Melbourne and surrounding areas by floods resulting from the overflow of the Yarra at many points along its banks. A temporary bridge rigged up was severely damaged by the flooding of the creek and was closed to vehicular traffic in April 1924. A new concrete bridge was constructed to replace it and by May 1926 all the concrete piles and abutments had been completed. The bridge was finally completed and opened for traffic in September 1926, almost three years after it initially collapsed. Viewed from Antoinette Boulevard looking northwest towards Falkiner Street. The building in the distance believed to be Souters Cottage. The term Louvred Truck describes the sides which consist of fixed louvres for ventilation. The aim was to keep the goods inside cool. He was club treasurer from 1926 to 1940. ...This laundry basket was made by Mr Walter Bullock helped by his son John at his workshop behind his house at No 35 High Street, Wodonga. This business was known as "Cantetex" and was given as a wedding present to Colin and Jennifer Hore in 1959. Mr Bullock passed away in Wodonga on 20 November 1973. Colin Hore is the son of Jack Hore, a very prominent member of the Wodonga Community. Jack Hore was awarded the Order of the British Empire, MBE in January 1962 for service as a Councillor of the Wodonga Shire Council. He held a Council seat continuously for 32 years, including eight terms as President. He also served two terms as Chairman of the Wodonga District Hospital Board 1961-62, having been a member of the board since 1954. He held a seat on the Victorian Country Fire Authority for many years until his death in 1970, having been a member of Wodonga Urban Fire Brigade since 1940. Jack played football with Wodonga for 14 years and coached the team to premiership honours in the Chiltern and District League in 1926. He was club treasurer from 1926 to 1940. Jack was also a Foundation member of Wodonga Show Society.This item is significant because it belonged to a member of a prominent Wodonga family and was manufactured in Wodonga.A laundry basket made from rattan cane work. The Advertiser on August 13, 1926 in an article promoting the auction stated “the estate is regarded as one of the best in the district, and will be sold practically without reserve.” It is noted that an advertisement running in The Argus February 22, 1951 offered the remaining 16 blocks for sale at £12.10.0 or £200 the lot. In August 1926, 30 picked allotments of 60x150 feet were put up for auction Saturday August 14, 1926 with frontages to Valley View Road and Fawkner Crescent advertised in the “Heart of the Glorious Wattle Country” and “Within 15 Minutes of the Newly Electrified Railway Station”. The Advertiser on August 13, 1926 in an article promoting the auction stated “the estate is regarded as one of the best in the district, and will be sold practically without reserve.” It is noted that an advertisement running in The Argus February 22, 1951 offered the remaining 16 blocks for sale at £12.10.0 or £200 the lot. G.S. Mackay was a prominent resident of Warrnambool from 1891 to his death in 1926. In the 1920s Mr J. Taylor became a partner in the firm known then as Mackay and Taylor and the firm later known as Mackay Taylor was in operation until the 1990s at 131 Kepler Street. The Register of Mortgagees with dates ranging from 1908 to 1924 comes from the old Mackay Taylor offices in the Kepler Street building.This Register of Mortgagees is of some significance as it contains information on many families living in Warrnambool in the early 20th century, including those of Burleig, Swinton, Uebergang, Turland, Bates, Wood and Paton. The entries have social significance, showing the typical loans taken out at the time and the prevailing interest rates. This is a small quarto sized ledger containing 166 pages of a register of mortgagees. The pages have been printed with ruled red lines. The cover is bound with a black cover and a red spine. There are pages with alphabetical tabs at the start of the book. The entries are in black ink. There is one loose page which is an old envelope used as scrap paper to record names and amounts owing or paid. After the line from Moe closed in 1954, G42 was sent to Colac, where it worked until closure of that line in mid-1962. At that time the G41 was in poor condition and was scrapped. John Inglis Lothian, publisher, bought St Abbs in 1903 and lived here with his family until 1908. Prior to this the property had been part of Isiah Ainger's farm. The San Miguel family lived there from 1911-1923 and in 1926 Thomas Lothian bought 'St Abbs' and his family lived there until 1974. As the donor was Miss Jean Lothian it is assumed that the photo was taken during one of the periods the Lothian family occupied the property and more likely during the earlier period. A black and white photograph of a wooden building with a number of doors and windows with lattice work in place of glass. Emma Uebergang and William James Atkinson married in 1930. They ran a mixed business in Whitehorse Road from 1926-1952. Stock included fruit and vegetables, sweets and some groceries. With Mr Atkinson is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries. To the left can be seen Whitehorse Road as it approaches the shopping centre and over the back of the horse can be seen the White Horse Hotel.
