Police stations (Aitken's Gap)
Aitken's Gap, otherwise known as The Gap or Buttlejork, and 3km west of Sunbury, was established as a township in 1845. It is in the area which is now bordered by the Calder Highway and Gap Road. The village was named after John Aitken, a Port Phillip pastoralist who took up the Mount Aitken run in 1836. Aitken's Gap Police Barracks (in the District of Bourke) opened in 1853 and was staffed by two Mounted Constables and one Foot Constable. The gaol (used to house prisoners and also gold en route to Melbourne) was built in 1857 from bluestone quarried in the area. The roof was made of slate. In 1861 it was staffed by 1 Mounted Senior Constable and 1 Foot Constable. The Barracks closed in 1863 when the Bendigo rail line was completed and the gold was transported to Melbourne by rail. All the buildings, except the gaol, were moved to Sunbury. The land was sold in 1870 and in 1989 the current owner donated the building to the Sunbury Police. The original building was dismantled, restored and rebuilt outside Sunbury police station.15 colour photos and 1 black and white photopolice stations; aitken's gap police station -

Goblet, Silver South Norwood Athletics, 1880
This cup was awarded in 1880 to James Dickson Junior for winning a 400 yards race. The cup was awarded by the South Norwood Athletic Club. There is a Norwood in South Australia and Scotland and a South Norwood in London. James Dickson Junior (1859-1949) was born in Warrnambool to James and Susan Dickson. His father had established a general store in Warrnambool in 1855 in partnership with John Cramond. This store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent one in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. James Dickson managed the London branch store of Cramond and Dickson from 1870 to 1880 and James Dickson Junior lived in London during that time and went to school in Scotland. So the cup could have been won in Scotland but it is most likely from a London athletics meeting. James Dickson Junior became a senior partner in the Cramond and Dickson business and was a leading citizen in Warrnambool as a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a committeeman on the Warrnambool Hospital Board for nearly 50 years and a president of the Warrnambool Racing Club. This cup is of considerable significance as it was won by James Dickson Junior in 1880. James Dickson Junior was a prominent businessman and active community worker in Warrnambool for more than 50 years. This is a silver cup or trophy with a maker’s symbol and four other hallmarks. It is in the shape of a goblet and has the race and winner’s information etched on the side of the cup. It has some small dents.‘South Norwood Athletic Sports 12 June 1880 400 Yards Maiden Race won by J. Dickson Jnr.’cramond and dickson store, warrnambool -

Tea Tin (Rolfe), Artefact, Early 20th century
This is a tea tin from the business of Rolfe and Co., a wholesale grocery and importing business founded in Melbourne in 1854 by George Rolfe Senior, a merchant and politician. George Rolfe died in 1871 and the business was then run by his son, George Rolfe, Junior. The business continued until at least the late 1930s. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a keen sportsman and he began holidaying in Warrnambool for some years in the 1870s when he started buying land in the area. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in Warrnambool and established his holiday residence at Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. He improved the original site with the addition of a large garden, stables, jetty, boatshed, water well, chaff and bone sheds, reservoir etc and bought other properties including Shipley on the Allansford Road and the adjoining property Fairy Hill. He continued managing the Rolfe and Co. business in Melbourne until his death in 1919. Today Rolfe’s Lyndoch property in Warrnambool is the site of an aged care facility. This tin is of considerable significance as it is a memento of George Rolfe who established the property of Lyndoch in Warrnambool and was a prominent land holder in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Note that we have another Rolfe tea tin but it is in very poor condition compared to this later acquisition). This is a rectangular-shaped tin with four sides originally painted yellow but now showing considerable rust. The printing on the sides is brown and white, some on a blue background and some surrounded by decorative patterns.No. 2 Rolfe & Co. Ltd 286-300 King St. Melbourne Rolfe’s Tea Rolfe and Co. was established at Melbourne in 1854. Ever since then it has enjoyed an enviable reputation as a firm which supplies to the public goods of the highest quality. george rolfe, lyndoch warrnambool, rolfe & co, importers, melbourne, history of warrnambool -

The photo shows Florence Moore (nee Moll) and her husband Bert being visited by Legatee George Standish and Jane Sullivan, who was the wife of Legatee John Sullivan (President in 1991). The note with the photo says it was for the archive in 1993. The handwritten letter from the Moores says: Dear George (Standish), . . . Enclosed is the photo I promised to send you we are Bert and Florence Moore (nee Moll). . . (http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/Imagine.asp?B=1858392, accessed 24 January 2014.) According to Neil Leckie, Manager of the Ballarat Ranger Military Museum: * Originally 12 – 14 year olds went to Junior Cadets attached to their school. * From age 14 – 17 they were Senior Cadets attached to the local militia unit. * After 1 July of the year a Cadet turned 18, the Cadet left the Senior Cadets and became a member of the Citizen Military Force. * In October 1918 the AIF, Militia and Cadets were renamed to give some connection to the AIF battalion raised in the area. Ballarat saw: 8th Australian Infantry Regiment comprising: * 8th Battalion AIF renamed 1st Battalion 8th Australian Infantry Regiment * 70th Infantry Militia renamed 2nd Battalion 8th Australian Infantry Regiment * 70th Infantry Cadets renamed 3rd B, 8th Australian Infantry. 39th Australian Infantry Regiment comprising: * 39th Battalion AIF renamed 1st Battalion 39th Australian Regiment * 71st Infantry Militia renamed 2nd Bn, 39th Australian Infantry Regiment * 71st Infantry Cadets renamed 3rd Bn, 39th Australian Infantry Regiment Prior to the reorganisation in 1918 the 18th Brigade was the 70th, 71st and 73rd Infantry. It is thought that the 18th Brigade Cadet units in 1920 were those that came from the old: * 69th Infantry (Geelong/Queenscliff) * 70th Infantry (Ballarat/Colac) * 71st Infantry (Ballarat West) * 72nd Infantry Warrnambool) * 73rd Infantry (NW Vic) The next name change came in 1921!Black and white photograph of a group of school boys in army uniform.
