Legal record - Agreement - Ballarat City with BIWC, City of Ballaarat, 11/1900
Copy of an agreement dated 16/11/1900 between The City of Ballarat and the British Insulated Wire Company Ltd. Sets out the conditions that a tram system would be constructed - such as tramcars, gauge, streets, speeds including that for horse trams, alterations to services, assignment to ESCo, fares, licence for 30 years, option for Council to purchase, and lines to be constructed. Signed by John Whykes and J J Brokenshire and Vincent J Duthie for Council and Benjamin Deakin and J F Hanby for BIWC. Prepared by Cuthbert Morrow & Must, Solicitors, Ballarat. See page 35 of "The Golden City and its Tramways", for background to this agreement. Letter - four duplicated foolscap sheets, dated 1/2/1962 to the Town Clerks of the City of Ballarat and the Borough of Sebastopol advised that the SECV is planning to close the Ballarat system. Details the losses, fares not covering costs, TRB for alternative bus services, the future of the tramway employees. Details the history of the Ballarat system, take over by the SEC and the conditions of that take over by the SEC, reconstruction, financial losses incurred by the SEC, decline in passengers, its suitability, condition of the infrastructure and rolling stock. Its unsuitability to extend, effectiveness of the Geelong conversion, ability of private bus operators, tramway employees, methods of abandonment, tram tracks, overhead and impact on the electricity supply system. Dated 2/4/1968. Has a table showing the income and losses and population from 1935 to 1967, a coloured graphical presentation of tramway statistics, sheet of Fares and Charges for Ballarat. Attached to the rear of the document was an advertisement for Ballarat Tramways fare sections (See Reg Item 8039) and a map showing tram and bus services - drawing No. VX4/1/1. Functional object - Run Number Plate - Preston P89, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1980s
East Preston Run number plate 'P89' used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Item was pushed into a slot of a reader which then recognised the identification through the series of holes on the left hand side. Fitted with metal strips, riveted on, to enable the card to be slotted into the holder by the crew member and then withdrawn when not required. Understood that the tram carried one of these at one end and then another without the holes at the other end. Run number plates used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Used by East Preston Depot until they were phased out and replaced with the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system c1990. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews.Demonstrates a MMTB Tram depot run number plate that was carried by each tram when in service.Pressed metal plate with corners trimmed, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a yellow background and the letter "P" and numbers "41"painted in black, to give a Run Number Plate for East Preston Depot. From a Melbourne Cable Car Trailer, built by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. circa 1885. It is cast in 2 halves and then the 2 pieces forged together. It is a poor example due to a poor sand system employed. Functional Object - Metal Box - set of two, SECV Conductors tin, 1950's
The box used by the SECV Ballarat and Bendigo tram crews for holding their ticket outfits and making returns to the Revenue Clerks. Able to be fitted with a padlock - see Reg. Item 3673. Issued to a crew member with Traffic Nos. 17 and 44. Each crew member was issued with a series of tins, A, B, and C which allowed for the various days and weekends to enable Revenue Clerks to accept returns and restock the tins with new tickets etc. Known to crews as "Two bottle boxes" - could fit two bottles of ale into them. The actual manufacturer is not known - could have been SEC workshops. See item 8917 for an MMTB tin.Has a strong association with tram crews and the ticket / revenue collection system. Tram crews used them to contain their tickets and to undertake their returns.
