Carnival Hat (Karnavalsmuts)
Carnival is an important annual event in the Southern Provinces of The Netherlands with each village often having its own Carnival Club and traditions. The Dutch People from the Southern Provinces continued in many cases this tradition and formed their regional Carnavals Clubs in Australia. Each Carnaval Club has a Council of Eleven with its own colourful uniform, including a hat. There is a variety of hats for the various roles within the committee and club.For people from the Southern Provinces of the Netherlands Carnival is an important cultural event.Decorative hat made of a silky material in green, orange, purple and cream, finished off with wavelike band and brown koala at front of hat (see picture - also see items 6351 and 6353).Has the name "Tony" on the inside -

Mrs. Axie Mazèl - Krammer and her friend Anneke Rappard each had two daughters with them in the Women's camp in Banjoe Biroe. Prior to her marriage Axie Krammer von Marchau had studied languages, literature and pedagogy and particularly the art of teaching through play. The spirit and optimism of these two women contributed to the survival of their 4 little girls. An accomplished artist Mrs. Mazèl created the original of this booklet for the 6th birthday of her friend's daughter Anne Marie on July 30, 1945.The illustrated story of children playing at internment does not hide the reality of their lives but puts in the context of a game of make-believe. The make-believe is illustrated in colour while the harsh reality is recognised in a small black and grey sketch in a corner of each page. Simply produced 30page booklet. It is the printed version of a handwritten booklet produced in July 1945 by Mrs Axie Mazèl Krammer to help her children deal with the memories of their imprisonment by the Japanese in the former Dutch East Indies. The materials and style imitate the simple materials that were available for the author during their 4 years of imprisonment and deprivation. The name "A. Whilst cataloguing this North Vietnamese Flag Mike Welles (donor of this item) and he told us the story on the flag that he donated. Mike said that he took this flag from a body or a bandit who got in the way of bullets. In 1966 Mike Wells was Operations Advisor from 1966 - 1967 at PhuocSilk Viet Cong flag for placement over the body of North Vietnamese soldier. Flag is blood stained.
