The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the ANZAC Day student commemoration, Anglsea camp, and milestone birthdays for widows. Plus the event that announced the Centenary Torch Relay. Two photos of journalist Edwin Maher signing copies of his books for Legatees at Legacy House. Presumably he had attended a Tuesday lunch meeting as a guest speaker. The books appear to be 'Stop the World I want to get on: How to drive yourself sane' (published 1993) and 'The Edwin Maher Scrapbook' (published 1990). Edwin Maher is a New Zealand born TV journalist who was a former ABC presenter. He helped present the Legacy Anzac Commemoration for Students in 1998.A record of a well known person attending Legacy House. Four soldiers mounted on horses in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance. Three of the four that are named are Legatee Rex Hall, Billy Kent-Hughes and Legatee Bill Scott. The other rider's name and date unknown. An article in The Herald on 19 April 1975 mentions that Rex Hall, Jim Holland and Bill Scott would wear their Light Horse uniforms and lead the Anzac Day parade to the Shrine mounted on police horses (see 01023). Though the date on the back of the photo is 1967. It is believed these legatees rode in at least 13 Anzac Day marches. Wilfred Kent-Hughes, known as Billy, served in both World Wars, was a prisoner of the Japanese, an Olympic athlete (hurdles, Antwerp 1920) and a State and Federal politician and was awarded a Knighthood. His niece, Jane, is a Legatee in the South Gippsland Group. From another article found Colonel Rex Hall was a member of the 5th Light Horse Brigade in World War 1. The trays say "Rosemary, A gift from Legacy". 00602.2 the lady in blue holding a Rosemary tray is Gwen Gunn who was one of the organisers of the Rosemary trays for many years. Other names unknown. In The Answer in 1995 an articles says: "Operation Rosemary. Since 1982 Legacy ladies have volunteered to make rosemary sprigs for the Anzac Day marchers. Seven copies of a publication that highlights the significant events of the Legacy over the years and include a report from the President. From 2007 to 2012 it was published twice a year as 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights'. Pictures from many of the activities the widows are involved in such as exercise classes, walks and the preparation of rosemary sprigs for Anzac Day. The report also recaps events through the year such as outings and camps for the junior legatees, legacy week, schools Anzac commemoration and the public speaking contest. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. Presented, together with a new King's Colour, by Major-General JS Whitelaw, CB, CBE at a parade of the 16th/28th Infantry Battalion (The Cameron Highlanders of Western Australia) held on the Esplanade, Perth, 26 August 1951. (Refer to item 7 for specific details relating to these new colours and for details of previous colours presented to 16th Battalion). 16th/28th Infantry Battalion became unlinked in March 1952 with both 16th and 28th becoming independent battalions within their own right Under major reorganisation of the CMF in 1960, all individual infantry battalions that existed at the time within each State were amalgamated to form State regiments, taking effect from 1 July 1960. Thus from that date the 11/44th, 16th and 28th Infantry Battalions were amalgamated to form The Royal Western Australia Regiment. In September 1960, at a ceremonial parade held at Northam Camp, the Colours carried by all former battalions were handed over for safe keeping by the new regiment. These former colours were subsequently laid up in the undercroft at the State War Memorial, King's Park on 29 November 1964. These were transferred to the Army Museum of WA in 1988 as part of the Bicentenary Colours Project. The battle honour for South Africa has incorrect year dates and should be "SOUTH AFRICA 1902". Reasons supporting this are:- • The Battle Honour "SOUTH AFRICA 1902" was originally granted under Military Order 123/1908 to the Goldfields Infantry Regiment of Western Australia. • Under 1921 reorganisation of the Citizen Forces, the existing units in the Goldfields area were formed into 16th Battalion (The Goldfields Regiment) to maintain the identity and traditions of 16th Battalion (AIF). This unit inherited the above battle honour. • All editions of the Australian Army List since 1927 have shown this battle honour for 16th Battalion as "SOUTH AFRICA 1902". Dark green with gold fringes. In the centre the battalion colour patch of a white over blue rectangle within a circle inscribed "SIXTEENTH BATTALION", surrounded with a wreath of Australian wattle and surmounted by the Imperial Crown. Below the wreath a scroll inscribed with the regimental motto "VINCENS". In the upper canton the Arabic numeral "16". The inclusion of 2 Turkish buttons and the possibility of the belt itself being Turkish seems to indicate that the belt was obtained at Gallipoli. As some of the other badges and buttons are not of Australian origin, the indication is that they were traded during the owner's service.This item is significant in that it has original badges and buttons from uniforms of WWI. This photograph of a flag raising ceremony by a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment was taken on Australia Day on the 26th of January 1996. It is not known where this ceremony took place, however it could have been in the grounds of Fortuna Villa. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last flag raising ceremonies before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. Both reports re Appeals being "ANZAC Tokens and Poppy Appeal" both topped the $2,000.00 mark which was a first, something they were striving for to reach that mark. Welfare details a number of areas they dealt with. The Appeals & Welfare Officer was Ernest Alfred Jackman. He served on Committee of the Bendigo Sub Branch in 1961 - 62 and 1973. He was on the Welfare Sub committee for 15years and Welfare Officer 1975 - 78. He was the Appeals Officer from 1960 - 1994. .1) This one was used in the Writing room which later became a Meeting room then finally the RSL Building & History room. it was attached to the LH side of the Fire Place and ran an old Electric Heater on the Hearth. It was used up to about 2005. .2) This one was in the Old Kitchen built on the side of the Soldiers Memorial Institute in the mid 1960's This one ran the Electric stoves used by the Womens Auxiliary of the Bendigo RSL and to make the Rum & Coffee for the ANZAC Day Dawn service. The kitchen was removed as part of the Renovations in 2016 - 18..1) Heater meter, metal construction black coating, top face has a glass section with a "usage meter" saying "coins paid, unused", metal plate under with details re numbers, maker, coins per hour, on right side slot for "Shillings only" with knob, removeable lockable tray at bottom for coin storage and removing. .2)Same style as .1) but a different glass face style metering, it has 11 circular dials with one hand, these show "Coins paid, coins unused", this one shows the round meter going around when in use. The original St Peter’s was built in 1922 as a World War memorial church. It burned down on Black Saturday, February 7, 2009. This folder includes brief research on the local World War One Anzacs of Kinglake remembered at the church including the names Farlow, Ford, Ingham, Jarvis, Lawrey, Mains and North some of whom are remembered on the Shire of Eltham War Memorial at Kangaroo Ground.
