Max MIDDLETON (1922-2013) Born Melbourne In a career spanning 60 years, Max Middleton is known as a 'plein air' landscape painter the artist loved to paint sunrises, aiming to capture what he saw on the spot in paint. Capturing the light was crucial to his artworks. Max Middleton studied Drawing at the National Gallery School under William Rowell in 1938, and painting under Harold Septimus Power in 1940. The first of Middleton's 68 professional exhibitions took place in 1946. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The model of the horse and spring cart was made by Mattaeus (Martin) Schaefer. Martin was awarded a Silver Medal for the model at the Bendigo Juvenile Exhibition in April 1879. At the Melbourne Intercolonial Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, 1880, Martin was awarded a gold medal for the 'woodwork of model spring cart' (Bendigo Advertiser 6 March 1880). In 1882, he was awarded a first prize for the cart at the Grand National Show, Bendigo. 1885: first prize County of Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society Spring Show. In 1883, Schafer (sic) was a member of the Bendigo Coachbuilders' Association ( Bendigo Advertiser, 'Bendigo Coachbuilders Association', Saturday 9 June, page 3 ) Martin died in 1900, at the age of 40, from pneumonia. His obituary reads: 'Death of Mr. M. Schaefer. After an illness of a few days, Mr. Martin Schaefer, coachbuilder and son of the late Mr. Peter Schaefer of Ironbark, died early on Wednesday morning. The cause of death was pneumonia, supervening on a cold which he contracted about Saturday last. He was 40 years of age and unmarried. He leaves three brothers one of whom is the Manager of the Victoria Consols Mine and another is Mr. Peter Schaefer of the Bendigo Post Office. The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being interred at the Bendigo Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Leypoldt officiated at the graveside and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. W.H. The wooden horse is cream with black hooves and a dark cream horse hair tail. Horse is carved from wood; harness made from fine leather with buckles and embellishments made from metal. Spring cart model is made from wood and metal with the shafts extended forwards alongside the horse. Inside the body of the cart is a bench seat, upholstered in leather. The cart is secured in place in the display case by wooden block restraints placed either side of the wheels. Target Charlie, for the first time ever, includes a comprehensive analysis of Australia's air war in Vietnam backed up by individual chapters on the operations of 35 Sqn (DHC Caribou), This item was donated by Colin Laurence Grey OAM. Colin was the driving force behind many of the displays at the National Vietnam Veterans Museum. He will be remembered for his expertise, and boundless enthusiasm for all things Australian. Colin organised teams of like-minded souls to bring home and restore many important historical aircraft. His success has been recognised and rewarded with an Order of Australian Medal 2000, and he is named in the Worldwide Who’s Who 2014-2015. Colin’s skills as an engineer, tool maker, boiler maker and organiser enabled him to restore steam trains, trucks, tanks, infantry weapons, various aircraft including a MIG-15 jet fighter and his largest project the Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber. He even replicated two dinosaur skeletons for Museum Victoria. In 1989 Colin joined the fledgling B-24 Liberator Memorial Fund as Project Manager/Restoration Co-Ordinator with the task to build a volunteer organisation that could find the AUD$10m required, source parts and materials for the largest aircraft restoration in Australia. The B-24 program had 10 volunteers, 60 sponsors and an international support network that provided parts, tooling, aviation equipment and political support. Colin’s combined engineering, academic and logistical skills provided the basis for advancing the skills of a very disparate group of volunteers form all walks of life. Colin established links with Centrelink, Corrections Victoria, RMT Uni and the ADF to develop the skills base of many less fortunate individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Colin’s work in this area gained him an AOM (2000). He featured in an ABC Australian Stories program and was awarded a life membership of the organisation. Colin was a founding member and President of the Oceania Aviation Museum Inc. which was instrumental in the historic listing of the joint WW2 USAAC/RAAF facility at Werribee and the Preserve Point Cook Aerodrome Group. Colin developed best practice engineering and fund-raising programs for a volunteer group, the Phillip Island Aquatic Centre. Colin’s constant learning, curiosity, passion and contribution to all things Australian have been an inspiration and a great example to all of us. The sarcastic title of this work pokes fun at the old fashioned idea that race should not be the subject of polite conversation. Deacon uses a white and a Black dolly to represent the unequal power dynamics that exist within Australian society. The dolls stand in for people who, based on the colour of their skin, experience the impact of racial inequality in vastly different ways. The cracked head of the white doll reveals an empty void. Symbolically violent, perhaps this emptiness suggests the dolls will never be able to fully comprehend one another’s experiences.This work was curated in RACE 2016 at Wyndham Art Gallery. Destiny Deacon (1956–2024) was a descendant of the KuKu (Far North Queensland) and Erub/Mer (Torres Strait) people. She exhibited nationally and internationally since the early 1990s in solo and group shows. Deacon held two major retrospectives, in 2004 and 2020, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne respectively. Her 2004 survey show, Walk & don’t look blak, toured to the Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Tokyo, the Tjibao Cultural Centre in Noumea, New Caledonia and Wellington City Gallery in New Zealand. In 2022, she was the recipient of the Red Ochre Award for Lifetime Achievement at First Nations Arts Awards. In the same year, Deacon’s work was shown at the Australian Embassy in Paris in an exhibition titled Destiny - The art of Destiny Deacon. In 2023, Deacon was included in the Sharjah Biennial 15, Thinking Historically in the Present, conceived by the late Okwui Enwezor and curated by Hoor Al Qasimi. In 2024, Deacon's work was exhibited in the 24th Biennale of Sydney, Ten Thousand Suns, curated by Cosmin Costinas and Inti Guerrero.
