The house depicted in this image was constructed in 1865 for James Young a prominent local businessman and participant in community affairs. James Young left Bacchus Marsh in 1869. In 1870 Stone Villa was purchased by local solicitor Francis Gell. In 1872 it was bought by William Collyer. For a time before 1883 it was used as a school operated by Mr Thomas Kissock and his wife. From 1883 until 1922 it was used as a parsonage by the Church of England. In 1922 it was sold to Frederick Slack as a private residence. Since Slack's ownership there have been other owners. As of April 2024 it remains as a private residence and is listed as a heritage property in the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. The identity of the two women and young girl in the foreground of the image has not been established. One of the women, and the child are possibly the wife and daughter of the Rev A.C. McCausland who was the Church of England Vicar in Bacchus Marsh from 1872 until 1885 and would have resided in this house in 1883 when this picture was produced.An early visual record of one of the most culturally and architecturally significant nineteenth century stone houses in Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de visite' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. A weatherboard extension with verandah has been added to the rear of the house, running north-south. A picket fence lines the block to the side of the dwelling. Awarded to Mrs Eva Snow. Mrs Snow was born Eva Williams, on 5 August 1901, in Octavia Street, St Kilda. As a girl she attended the Windsor Methodist Church in Upton St with her parents, her sisters and brother. She also went to the Sunday School there. Her grandfather, Mr Kingham, was the Superintendent. If a student attended Sunday School for a full year without missing once, they were awarded a silver star. For 4 years perfect attendance the gold star with laurel wreath was awarded. Eva was awarded hers when she was about 11 years old. Eva moved to Murrumbeena with her family and joined the Methodist Church, then a small wooden building in Dandenong Road. The photograph of the 30 pupils with their teacher was taken in 1968 at the Bulla S.S. No. 46. after they came first in the Greenvale and District School Sports Association. Other schools competing were Greenvale, Mickleham, Craigieburn, Broadmeadows Yuroke and Tullamarine. Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated enthusiastically across the British Empire. Commemorative medallions were produced and distributed by the Victorian government and many local governments. Two medallions produced for this occasion by the Shire of Grenville are in the LDHS collection. One of these is believed to have been presented to schoolgirl Mabel Cluff, of Linton State School. The medallion which was presented to Mabel Cluff was donated to LDHS in 1995. Acquisition of this medallion is acknowledged in "Society Notes", Number 118, July 1995, but donor's name is not recorded. For reasons unknown these two medallions were not catalogued until 2016.Round, gilt bronze medallion, on the obverse two conjoined faces of Queen Victoria, one as a young girl, the other as an older woman. The phrase "Queen Victoria 60 Years of Reign" and the dates "1837-1897" around the perimeter. "Stokes and Sons" imprinted in tiny letters on the extreme lower edge. On the reverse, an image of the Shire of Grenville offices in Linton, with the word "Linton" underneath. "Shire of Grenville" & "Victoria" around the perimeter. Joyce Rowe (afterwards Joyce Chung) was born in Portland in 1912 (#33359), the daughter of Joseph and Florence Rowe (née Nicol). Joyce seems to have been living with her Nicol grandparents in Linton when she started at Linton State School in 1917. This photograph was taken on the day of the school concert c.1908 and is a companion photograph to the one of the "Misses Barry's cantata group". (See registration nos. 1138, 1507, 1625 and 2018-17 - in this photograph, which mostly shows the girls' group, some of the boys can be seen in the background.) The boys are unidentified, although it is believed that the boy in the dark cap (front row) is Eric Nicholls, and other boys may include Horace Ball and Alec Thompson. The teachers are two of the Misses Barry (on RHS and LHS, in light-coloured clothing), and Miss Mary Rankin (in centre, dark dress). Note: An article in the Ballarat 'Courier', 24 August 2001 (copy of article kept with photograph), identifies the Barry sisters as Miss Lena (Helena) Barry on the left, and Miss Gertrude Barry (wearing glasses) on the right. This article also names B. A vintage 1903 hardcover children’s book with the title Chatterbox printed with white lettering at the top of the front cover, which has a green coloured background with an illustration in a large circle showing a girl winding a handle on a wishing well in a garden. The publisher details are printed at the bottom, with Price Three Shillings printed in red letters at the very top. The covers have broken away from the cotton bound spine. The faded light tan coloured back cover has an advertisement for EPPS'S (Breakfast) COCOA. with details of its efficacy and use for good health. The manufacturer details are added at the bottom. Inside the front cover are advertisements for Bird's Custard Powder and Robinson's Patent barley "in powder form". The frontispiece coloured illustration inside depicts a young girl dressed in wintry clothes carrying a lidded cane basket walking along a road on a windy autumn day. The title of the picture is 'Going with the Gale'. The title page has the title plus Edited by J. Erskine Clarke, M.A and publisher details with a black lined illustration of children, a woman with children at her knee reading and flowers. There are further coloured plates in the collection.
