October Meeting (Newsletter No. 230, Jun. 2016) Community groups are the backbone of any community and the former Shires of Eltham and now Nillumbik are no exception. In our area there are some groups with a long history of consistently contributing to the development, enrichment and benefit of our local communities. Some we are well aware of, others not so much. CityMission Retirement Village, also known as Eltham Retirement Centre, also formerly known as Judge Book Memorial Village, was officially opened on Sunday 28 October 1956. This history documents the first thirty years through to 1986. Founded by the Melbourne City Mission, the significant early history of the "village for the aged" is documented including the various challenges faced including ongoing expansions and building develoment needs and impacts of flooding from the nearby Diamond Creek. Gin came in bottles sold at licensed premises either locally or in larger cities visited during shopping expeditions. The shape of bottles varied and were re cycled remaining the property of the manufacturer who paid for their return. Sealed with a cork. History of H & A Gilbeys Ltd.Historical: Change of bottles - shape, glass, embossing. Collected by bottle collectors. Aesthetic: Display showing embossing and shape.Clear glass bottle with a mottled pattern except on one side where there is a clear rectangle and above it the shape of an elongated heart. The other side is heavily embossed with manufacturer. The first 2 lines across the bottle printed in capital letters below which is the manufacturer written as a signature and Ltd underneath. The shape bulges from the base one third of the way up then tapers gently for the second third to a straight neck. The top third finishing at the lip before the opening. At the bottom there is a short taper to a smaller base. the opening is for a cork seal.Side: 'This Bottle Always / Remains The Property of / J & A Gilbey / Ltd.' Manuscript titled "A brief history of the Tramways of Bendigo", prepared by Keith Kings during 1965 based on the text in the last paragraph. Was to be a joint effort with Wal Jack, notes Wal's death in 1964. Provides a short history of Bendigo, the construction and operation of the battery and steam tram system, the take over and construction of the electric tramways by the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria. Includes the takeover by the SEC, replacement tramcars, the North Bendigo extension, exchange of cars with Ballarat, Geelong, attempts to close the system and operations during the mid 1960s. The material in this manuscript would have formed by the basis of a booklet published by the ARHS/TMSV at the time of the closure of the SEC operated tramways in 1971.Yields information about the history of Bendigo Tramways written in 1965.
