Contents: Ely family tree Frederick Ely was born in Cowlinge Suffolk, in 1838. (His parents were George Ely b1793 and Sarah Poulter b1792, both born in Cowlinge. Frederick came to Australia on the ship 'Ocean Monarch' in 1856 with (most likely) his brother George, aged 34, his wife Elizabeth Piper, aged 22, and daughters Elizabeth, aged 2, and Harriet, aged 1. George and his family settled in the Harcourt area of Victoria, as did his brothers William and Henry. Georg Chodziesner made this chanukiah in Hay Camp in 1940. It was made to celebrate the Jewish festival of Chanukah. Georg was born in 1900 in Berlin to a prominent Jewish advocate Justizrat, Ludwig and wife Elise. Fearing arrest at the outbreak of war, Georg fled Germany to the United Kingdom. His wife, Dorothea, and son, Wolfgang Benno, emigrated to Chile. Like many German Jewish men, Georg found himself on board the HMT Dunera, bound for interment at Tatura. On release, Georg joined the Australian Army 8th Employment Company in which he served for the remainder of the war. Georg sought permission for his son to join him in Australia, and the pair were reunited in Melbourne in May 1945. Dorothea had passed away from illness in 1943. After settling in Australia, Georg worked as a Patent Attorney and remained working at the same firm until his death in 1981.This Chanukiah was cut from a kerosene tin using nail scissors and mounted on a wood block base. A programme for the Legacy Centenary Commemoration Ceremony held at the Shrine of Remembrance at the end of the Torch Relay donated by Legatee David Kelly. The service was attended by His Excellency, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and his wife, her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley. Legacy was founded in Melbourne in 1923, so Melbourne hosted the final leg of the Torch Relay that began in Pozieres, France in April 2023. On Friday 13th October the Torch Relay concluded at the Shrine of Remembrance with the Torch flame returned to the eternal flame at the Shrine. Legatee Kelly was selected to be the last Legacy torchbearer, he lead representatives from Legacy Clubs attending The 2023 National Conference up the Forecourt where the flame passed to the wife of the Governor General Mrs Linda Hurley. Frederick William Mawson and his wife Mary (nee Mullard) and baby daughter, Beatrice Mary migrated to Victoria as steerage passengers, arriving in Melbourne on 1 July 1882 on the sailing ship the ‘Holmsdale’. They settled in Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills (house demolished) and he established a jam factory in Boundary (Warrigal) Road. Further children of the family were Harriett, Muriel, Ethel, Winifred, John and Frederick William (Jnr). The later died in WW1 and there is a transcript of his diary in this collection. Four of the daughters became nurses, three serving in WW1. The other son John became a local builder, who after the war built 'Holmsdale' in Union Road as a convalescent home to be run by his sisters. A photo of the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy clubrooms on 27 November 1945. The photo appears in the Argus newspaper and the caption read: 'During her busy tour of service clubs yesterday the Duchess, while at the Legacy Club, accepted a cup of tea from Mrs E Sherwen, wife of the senior vice-president of Legacy. While this incident was being photographed a flashbulb exploded with a loud report, but the Duchess was unperturbed.' The article continued that the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were welcomed by the President W A Perrin and his wife. Mr Perrin explained that Legacy has accepted the responsibility of caring for children of deceased service men, and that since 1922 27,000 children have been given a chance at least equal to the one they might have had their fathers lived. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children: Henry Beater (1886-1962), Ada Susannah May (1888-1962), Orlando Julius (1891-1917) and Lilian Adelaide ( -1956). Ada married George Herrick Washfold, and had four children: Lilian Mavis, Orlando George Barnard, William Edwin and Henry Clifford (the husband of the donor).An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian family of Pakington Street, Kew, comprising professional and amateur photography, depicting individuals, natural and settled environments and the interactions between these worlds. Many of the photographs vividly capture the worlds of three generations of men - Henry Christian, his son Orlando Henry Beater Christian, and his grandson of Henry Christian. The most important photographer was the youngest, Henry Christian, who was a keen explorer, not just of his immediate environment but also of the Victorian wilderness. His major opus is contained in two albums in which he records, sometimes in majestic detail and on other occasions the intimate features of the natural world. His photographic travels during the 1920s, often in solitary ramblings but on other occasions with companions, recall the heroic landscape photography of an earlier era, pioneered by Nicholas Caire. In addition to their aesthetic value, the albums are historically significant records within the State of Victoria, of what is now a distant point in time, and of places that have become radically altered through human intervention. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-46: Captain John Powell was born in Finland in 1843. He came to Phillip Island in 1892 and resided at Rhyll with his son-in-law, Captain Johan Jansson. He died in 1927 aged 84 years. His son Alfred is also buried with him. Alfred died in 1938 aged 54 years. 466-47: Lt Colonel A. G. Cameron DSO adn BAR. Lt Colonel Cameron was the commanding officer of the 2nd Australian Infantry Batalion. He was one of only 28 Australians decorated with the DSO and BAR during WWII. He died on 8th June 1960, aged 51 years. The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. While most family members settled in Victoria from 1834, others remained in England and in Tasmania. The daguerreotype was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.Members of the extended Henty family were notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Stephen George Henty's family lived at 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District lived in his final years at 'Field Place', Kew. Numerous members of the Henty family are buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Three quarter length seated studio portrait of Elizabeth Margaret (Milligan) Gaunt, taken using the daguerreotype photographic process, and encased in a standard daguerreotype frame made of tooled leather, velvet and gilt metal. The sitter was the half sister of Mary Ann Lawrence (1821-81), the wife of Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' and 'Field Place', Kew. She married Charles Gaunt (1842-1916) at St John's Church of England, Launceston in 1868. The charity organisation, Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, was formed within the Missions to Seamen Institute to provide a home away from home, for visiting seamen. The flyer was to recruit new members or for former Members of the charity to renew their subscription. St Katherine’s Church St Helena, entry gates with Church in background. St Katherine’s Church was built in 1856 (known as the Rose Chapel after the wife of Major Anthony Beale, Katherine Rose Beale). The Church was destroyed by fire in 1957 then restored. The Cemetery was initially the burial place of the Beale family but now approximately 200 people are buried there. Stephen Charman, aged 21 years arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's emigrants. He established purchased land in 1852 and established a market garden at Spring Grove Cheltenham with his 2nd wife Mary nee Gettens. Stephen died 1906 in Gippsland. He wrote letters to his brother Michael who had remained in England Stephen and Mary Charman were pioneer market gardeners in Moorabbin Shire 1842 and were involved in the development of Church, school and community in the area now called Cheltenham. Charman Road Cheltenham was a boundary of their land. St Katherine’s Anglican Church was built in 1858, by Anthony Beale as a memorial to his late wife Katherine. The cemetery is a rare example in Victoria of a traditional English parish church with its private graveyard and is of State Significance.
