The photo shows the opening ceremony of Henham Township by Lord Stradbroke (the man on the right of the structure). A strip of land 2 kilometres long and half a kilometre wide had been approved as suitable for subdivision into 591 quarter acre blocks valued at 30-35 pounds each. Unfortunately it turned out to be a "fizzer". This is a photo of a very large group of people at the Langi Ghiran Picnic Grounds in 1904. The photo provides information about leisure wear and leisure activities in the Ararat area at this time. This photo is of local significance (Langi Ghiran and the Ararat district). Although the photo is physically damaged, the detail in most of the photo is still very clear, giving information on clothing and leisure activities. Importance of religion in the Yendon community is evidenced by the two churches. This is the weatherboard building of the catholic church and there was also a brick Anglican Church. Both these buildings were eventually removed when congregations declined as the community declined in the twentieth century.The catholic church was looking a bit delapidated in this photo taken just before it was demolished.
