This book was written by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following in the 19th century, not only in England, but throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts, costing one penny, and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. These books were sub-titled ‘Plain Talk for Plain People’ with the copy we have being the second in the series labelled ‘140th thousand’ and published in 1892, the year of Spurgeon’s death. It appears that Spurgeon’s books were in many a home in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This book is of great interest as one which was familiar to many residents of Warrnambool and district in the 19th century. Charles Spurgeon was apparently widely known to Warrnambool residents in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons from time to time and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the unidentified photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society contains a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife. This is a book of 158 pages with some of the pages missing at the end. The book is coverless and held together with string and a piece of glued paper. Two photos of Legatee Saltmarsh with widows in Legacy House. L/ Saltmarsh was the Widow Committee Chairman and was involved in organising events for widows and in publishing the newsletter. The photo shows him with two widows, Marion Scammell was working on a her tapestry under the guidance of Nancy Crooks, the instructor. One was published in the newsletter in April 1996 to show widows the types of activities that Legacy provided. For many years there were workshops for craft and others for painting. The timetable for activities was published in The Answer (prior to Sept 1992 it was called the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter) each month. As mentioned in the Description, the cover of The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is plain and in good condition. The internal pages are in similarly good condition, straight cut, and secured to the book binding with no signs of heavy use or wear. However the paper of the internal pages appears yellowed with age, unlike the cover pages that join the boards to the content pages. As also noted in the Description, the internal pages have intricate lettering, with black page borders, double column printing, and nineteenth-century styled black and white illustrations (etchings). This suggests that the bound pages represent an earlier print run and the cover was added, or replaced, at a later date. The book cover’s plain green design with minimal gold lettering seems more recent publishing practice than the pages within. This book bears no publishing date, which supports the speculation that the content pages were purchased as a remaindered lot and bound and distributed by another party, possibly in Australia rather than Britain, and at a much later date than the old fashioned page formatting suggest. The good condition of the cover and the bound pages indicate the book was seldom borrowed or read and the book may therefore have been acquired after the height of the poet Longfellow’s popularity (in the mid to late nineteenth century). The stamps and labels attached to the cover and title pages testify to the book’s provenance, from its initial ownership by the Warrnambool Mechanics Institute Library, to custody in the Warrnambool Municipal Library (where it, along with other WMIL texts, was catalogued by a librarian called Pattison), and finally to the Flagstaff Hill Historical Book Collection. The book was part of a collection of books, now known as the Pattison Collection, which originally belonged to the Warrnambool Mechanics Institute Library. In this context it is an example of the range of titles carried by Victorian rural libraries in the colonial and federation periods (Significance Assessment 2009).The book is bound in plain green cloth covered board with gold lettering on the top of the spine, which reads “THE POETICAL WORKS OF LONGFELLOW”. The cover is plain otherwise and in good condition. Clear Tape secures a typed paper sticker on the lower middle of the spine, which reads “PAT 811 LON”. The internal pages are in similarly good condition, straight cut, and secured to the book binding with no signs of heavy use or wear. In 'Underwear: Fashion in Detail' (Lynn, Eleri, V&A Publishing, 2014) the chapter on 'Decoration' includes a contemporary quote by the fashion writer Mrs Eric Pritchard, who stated that even the virtuous woman should now wear pretty underwear, and in fact was morally bound to do so to remain attractive to her husband and save him from the sin of adultery. This prettiness included 'underwear that became decorative and delicate, trimmed with the lace and baby-ribbon that complemented the Edwardian predilection for indulgent and seductive lingerie' (Lynn, Eleri, p.46). This bodice and Director Knickers formed part of the trousseau of Margaret Grace Burland, who married John Lawrence Henty Hindson at St George’s Church, Malvern in 1912. The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.Cotton lingerie including a camisole and drawers owned by Grace Burland, and forming part of her trousseau. September Meeting (Newsletter No. 224, Sep. 2015) On 4th October 2014 Nillumbik Shire Council launched a publication titled ‘Nillumbik Tales - Voices of our Elders’, which is a collection of colourful and personal snapshots of our local community. The unique Nillumbik based stories have been written by a variety of authors, including some who are members of our Society. At our meeting on Wednesday 9th September 2015 we will be having some of our members reading their own ‘Nillumbik Tale.’ In collating and publishing this historically important collection Nillumbik Shire Council has documented many aspects of our area and of the people who contributed to our community. This object is part of the Wilfred Clarence Busse Collection. Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern, Victoria in 1898. His family first arrived in this region during the gold rush era, purchasing a piece of land adjacent to the Murray River. The spectacular scenery and rich history of the area is said to have inspired Busse in his writing. He attended Wesley College in his school days, before going on to study law at the University of Melbourne. After graduating from university, Busse would go on to become a barrister, but he is best known as a writer of fiction, publishing two novels: 'The Blue Beyond: A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia' and 'The Golden Plague: A Romance in the Early Fifties'. Busse died in 1960. This object is significant as it is associated with Wilfred Clarence Busse, a successful writer and barrister who was born in Chiltern, Victoria. This book contains a biography of H.G. Wells by Vincent Brome and is part of Flagstaff Hill’s Pattison Collection of books which originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute. It was published by Longmans, Green & Co. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co, was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The book is significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Gladys Reed was a member of the Ormond Choral Society c 1950. who performed plays and musicals the City of Moorabbin and she was skilled in hand knitting, crochet and dressmaking. Her garments were used by her family and the Ormond Choral Society . Patons' & Baldwin Ltd began as two separate companies: J & J Baldwin and Partners, founded in the late 1770s by James Baldwin of Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, and John Paton Son & Co., founded in 1814 by John Paton of Alloa, Scotland. The two companies merged in 1920 and diversified into producing wool for home knitters, as well as publishing knitting patterns under the "Patons Rose" and "Baldwins Beehive" trademark. The use of these buttons as a means of raising revenue through patriotic sentiment occurred soon after Australia pledged allegiance to Empire. Buttons reflected ‘public sentiment, courage, patriotism, generosity and several [un- named] virtues’ such as the martyred mother of a ‘fallen’ hero. Attention was paid to attractiveness of design, encoded symbolism and high quality of production. Expressing ‘loyalty’, they were tokens to be kept for perpetuity. Female labour was used to operate the die that compressed the tin backing, photographic print and celluloid cover together. The pin was applied by hand. Women, of all ages, entered into the spirit of voluntary sales. Often they were sold at the entry and exit points of major pedestrian thoroughfares. . David RANKIN (1946- ) Born Plymouth, Devon, England Arrived Australia 1948. Leaving rural New South Wales David Rankin arrived in Sydney in 1967. A largely self taught artist he taught art between 1966 and 1974, with his first exhibition was held in 1968. During the 1970s he established Port Jackson Press publishing fine art prints. In 1983 David Rankin won the Wynne Prize for Australian landscape painting. Rankin lives and works in New York, New York., United States of America. His abstract work is distinguished by its loose, expressionistic use of line. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Murray Comrie Collection. John Pierce's Southern Cross General Store, a wholesale grocer and spirit merchant was put up for sale after Pierce's death in 1871. It was later incorporated into the Flour Mill complex. De Gruchy & Leigh was a publishing and printing firm operating in Melbourne and regional Victoria from the late 1850s until the mid 1860s. The company published almanacs and guidebooks as well as prints (portraits, views and genre scenes), maps and architectural plans (Source: National Portrait Gallery, Canberra). This is a copy created from another item in the collection - a printed piece of paper which was either a packing label or receipt form used at the company or a brand label for bottles, perhaps for wine made by the proprietor. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. Monochrome photographic copy of a lithograph. Depicts a building with glass front windows and signage stating 'J. Pierce Wine & Spirit Merchant' and 'Southern Cross General Store, Wholesale and Retail Depot'. In front of building on road are two horses hitched to carts and men standing on cart and in front of store. This store was located on the south-eastern corner of Commercial Road and King Street. Document. Newspaper Article - Mr J W Faul, J. P. Newspaper article from 'Bendigo Advertiser' dated Saturday Feb 3 1917, reporting on the death of Mr John William Faul, J. P. He was born in 1849 London. He worked in the publishing room of the 'Bendigo Advertiser' c1863 - 1865. Was an apprentice plumber and was later foreman on the Hepburn Mineral Water Supply Works at the age of 20. In 1871 he opened a shop in Williamson St, later Williamson St and then Hargreaves St until a fire on 21 Dec 1912 destroyed his business. In 1891 he was gazetted a Justice of the Peace. In 1902 he contested the South Sandhurst Seat, narrowly missing out.
