The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The town of Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley surrounded by farmland. it is adjacent to Mt Beauty (built from 1946), an SECV town built for the workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which was being constructed from 1911 to 1961. Tawonga consisted of essential amenities including a store, school, butter factory, sporting facilities, post office, hall and hotel. Activities involved sport, social get togethers eg. dances, fundraising, CWA etc. The posters are a collection of historical photos, documentations and information regarding the history of the town of Tawonga, which is the centre of a farming community in the Kiewa Valley.Posters framed with thin black plastic strip, covered by glass. This is a poster advertising an art exhibition by the Warrnambool artist, Robert Ulmann. The exhibition was held in the Naringal Hall in November/December 1982. Robert Ulmann (1927-1999) was born in Zurich, Switzerland where he studied sculpture and painting. After living in Canada for some time he came to Australia in 1969. From 1970 to 1972 he was employed by the Northern Territory Administration as a manual arts instructor to the aboriginal people of Docker River west of Uluru. He exhibited extensively in city and regional galleries and won numerous awards for his artistic works. His love of wildlife extended to his interest in the Southern Right Whale and he was greatly responsible for publicizing the annual appearance of the whales at Logans Beach in Warrnambool and protecting their environment. His studio in Warrnambool is still visited by many tourists. This poster is of interest as it concerns an art exhibition of the work of Robert Ulmann, a well-known Warrnambool artist of the 20th century. This is a sheet of white paper with black edging. Photograph of Lynne Scott and her five children to promote Legacy week. The newspaper cutting says that her husband Colin Scott died in 1985, he had served in the Vietnam War as a reconnaissance pilot. One of his children, Chris, has become a Brisbane Bears footballer. The family were interviewed and said how Legacy had been very good to their family. Lynne Scott says "The most important thing for us was knowing there was someone we could call on if we needed and that the children were being looked after". The Scott family were featured on the 1994 poster for Legacy Week. 1994 was the year of the family and it was fitting that a family was chosen to promote Legacy. Names unknown except for Elaine Ward who is seated in a red jacket in the third photo. There is a laundry basket as a hamper, perhaps for a raffle prize. The baked items have as sign "With compliments of Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse" so the items may have been donated for sale. A poster on the wall is of Daryl Somers and says "Hey Hey its Legacy Day" so it was either 1996 or 1997 when Legacy invited Daryl Somers to be Personality of the Year in 1996 and again in 1997. He participated in many events to promote Legacy, including a parachute jump, a car raffle, lunches and compering a concert, 'A Night to Remember' (see 00853, 00854, 00997, 00056).A record of the type of activities Legacy provided as a social outlet for widows. Herbert Allan Leighton was an actor and elocution teacher known widely in the eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. But all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he bought expensive clothing and jewellery for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with Bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money that he knew to be stolen. Investigations by Perth police showed that Leighton was really, Victorian born, Norman Campbell. He had worked as a clerk for Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role at Sydney Savings Bank in NSW. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery and embezzlement, a crime that he spent 7 years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo.Large format scrapbook collated by H.A. Leighton. The scrapbook has a heavy blue cover with maroon tape binding on the spine and the corners with thick newsprint paper pages. Paper items have been glued onto the pages with several loose items. The North Kew Centre was the third established at North Kew. It followed a lease of a house at 50 Willsmere Road. The Peel Street building was designed by Mr Chipperfield. Messrs McIntosh and Taylor were the successful tenderers, the price being 1,240 pounds. The North Kew Baby Health Centre was finally opened on 18 June 1930 in the presence of the mayor, councillors and citizens of Kew, and representatives of the Infant Welfare Council. A report in The Age of 19 June described the opening in detail as well as the features of the new Centre. These included: "The rooms ... filled with flowers, pink and mauve hydrangeas and native heath, and the walls are adorned, with a charming frieze, representing windmills, flocks and a fairy tale goose girl. On the walls are hygiene editions of the funniest of Belloc's "Cautionary Tales" revised as posters, Outside there is promise of a gay garden, and a lovely view of green fields sloping to a shining bend of the river." Some time after that it was removed from its frame and badly broken. The logo said "Seventy years of constant caring 1923-1993". Clive had been a junior legatee as a boy. This A4 page could be used as a poster to promote badge week. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. The canteen is part of the Mission to Seafarers building that has catered to visiting seafarers since 1917. The canteen is operated by the Flying Angel Club, which offered services to seafarers including food, drink and souvenirs from the canteen and events held in the main hall which invloved the use of the canteen. The Ladies Harbor Lights Guild also used the canteen facilities for functions and fundraisers held at the Mission to Seafarers. One of the flyer in Chinese helps dating the photograph between 1963-66 when Padre Wong was chaplain at the Mission.Historical record of the Mission to Seafarers canteen post-1963. Program describes many events for the period December 2003 until November 2004 including a travelling exhibition entitled 'In the Drivers Seat' that expored motoring past, present and future which came to Bendigo at the Golden Dragon Museum 15 April - 31 May 2004. Also a postcard, which reproduces a poster used to promote RACV road service in about 1925.
