Parents retired to Hillside Avenue Eltham. Mother was kiiled by Burgoyne's truck in 1970 outside the Burgoyne shop (Inquest held Melbourne, 16 Dec 1970 VPRS 24/P0002, 1970/2408). Peter Dousset opened a garage in Research in 1948 with Kevin Brinkkotter and they started the Research Fire Brigade using his breakdown truck towing a water trailer. 2. We have three folders catalogued for the Grimshaw name and these will in due course be consolidated/corrected: 1. EDHS_01361 – A.H. Grimshaw of Research, Vic., 1927 2. EDHS_01362 – John Grimshaw of Greensborough, 1862 (Correct name is Josiah Grimshaw) 3. EDHS_01375 – Mr Grimshaw, miner of Kinglake and Caledonian Diggings. (This is believed to be Mr J.L. (Jack) Grimshaw who reportedly discovered the first gold in Kinglake. These folders are made up of copies of pages of research undertaken by Mr Keith Chappel in the 1970s, which is now catalogued as a separate item. He was arrested and charged with the murder of John Mitchell at Greensborough, September 24, 1962. Grimshaw was ultimately convicted of manslaughter and sentenced for three years in prison. Newspaper reports of the day show his name as Josiah. Whether he was also known as John is not clear, and whether he is the same as J.L. (Jack) Grimshaw who discovered gold at Kinglake, again is unclear without undertaking further research into the matter. This book gives information on the place names of South Australia and the origins of the names. It was compiled by Ronald Praite and John Tolley in 1970 and so is somewhat out of date as more place names would have to be added today. European settlement began in South Australia in 1836.This book is of minor interest to those in the Warrnambool area and may be useful for those researchers whose families have some connection to early South Australian history. This is a hard cover book of 208 pages. The cover is dark red with the names of the book and the authors on the spine. The dust cover has a colour photograph of a South Australian panorama on the front and a plain green back cover. The book has a Foreword, Sources of Reference, Acknowledgements, Introduction and an alphabetical listing of South Australian place names and the origins of the names. This is a book giving information on the streets of Colac and the origins of the names. Colac is a city 150 kilometres south west of Melbourne and is a commercial centre for a major agricultural area. It is situated near the 3rd largest volcanic plain in the world and European settlement began in 1837. The book was commenced by Ian McIntosh in the 1970s and in 2005 the Colac and District Historical Society took on the project again with the major editors being Ida and Andrew McIntosh. This book is of interest, particularly those in the Western District of Victoria, as it contains information on Colac streets, many of which were named after pioneers of the district. The book will be useful for research. This is a soft cover book of 60 pages. The cover has a blue background and features a colour photograph (mainly in green, blue and white tonings) of a panorama of the Colac district. The photograph extends over the front and back covers. The book contains the names and name origins of Colac streets in alphabetical order and many black and white photographs. The pages have a glued binding. This is a short history of the Ecklin South Primary School from 1885 to 1985. Ecklin South is 37 kilometres from Warrnambool and 25 kilometres from Port Campbell. The school was established on a five acre site in 1885 with the first teacher, Andrew Harkness. A new building was erected in 1937.This booklet is of interest because it gives the history of a school in Ecklin South, a district not far from Warrnambool. It will be useful for research. This is a soft cover booklet of 28 pages produced in-house by Ecklin South Primary School Centenary Committee members.. The cover is a buff colour with a black, grey and white sketch of the school on the front. The history of the school is type-written and there are several black and white photographs reproduced by photocopying. The booklet includes a poem, ‘Ecklin School’ by Iris Wormald and a list of the teachers from 1885 to 1985. The booklet has been stapled. Some of the pages are difficult to read. This 1989 booklet contains lists of publications connected with Warrnambool and District and it was compiled by W. Pinson and M. Johnstone. The publications listed were ones held at the time by the Warrnambool branch of the Corangamite Regional Library Service and the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education library. The publications are listed under the headings of Community, Environment, Heritage, Industry and Tourism. Although the information in this book is well out-of-date, it may be of interest to researchers today. The publications may still be available at the Warrnambool Library or at the South West College of TAFE in Timor Street Warrnambool or at Deakin University in Warrnambool. These sheets contain photocopied information on Warrnambool streets and blocks – Allotment numbers and Section numbers, names of developers, date of street construction approval, names of lawyers, Titles Office information etc. They have been originally compiled by Warrnambool City Council staff and concern Warrnambool streets projects from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. This is photocopied material and therefore is of little historical importance. But the information contained therein will be useful for researchers. Document One: These are 57 photocopied pages containing lists of Warrnambool streets and blocks and information on their development. The original information has been handwritten. This book gives information on 1,100 War Memorials in Victoria. It was compiled by Bradley, Christey et al and produced for the Returned and Services League of Victoria. War Memorials were established in most settlements in Australia after World War One and added to after World War Two and succeeding conflicts. The number of War Memorials reflect the historical importance of Australia’s involvement in world wars and because of our distance from the battlefields they have become sacred places in Australia – de facto war cemeteries. The book includes information on the Warrnambool War Memorial and those in our area. This book is of interest as it gives details on War Memorials and includes all those in the Western District of Victoria. It will be useful to researchers of social and military history. This is a hard cover book with a blue cover and gold printing on the spine. The dust cover is dark blue with a colour sketch of the Portland War Memorial and white printing on the front cover and an outline of the map of Australia on the back cover. This book has been written by Alice Goldstraw in 1937. It is a fine history of life in the Naringal/Cudgee/Heytesbury Forest area at the end of the 19th century. There are accounts of the bushland, the school and the people in the area. Alice Goldstraw (d. 1967) was the daughter of George and Robina Goldstraw who were pioneer farmers in the Cudgee area. The Goldstraw families were prominent in the early history of Warrnambool and district, especially as timber millers and sawyers. This book is of considerable importance as it is a rare copy of ‘The Border of the Heytesbury’ written by Alice Goldstraw. It provides a wealth of material for researchers. An index to the book has been compiled by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a soft cover booklet of 34 pages. It has a buff-coloured cover with black printing and blue lines on the front cover. There is also a Warrnambool & District Historical Society stamp on the front cover. This biscuit is called a 'Dog Biscuit' and was produced during WWI. It was part of a rashion kit to accompany another biscuit and a tin of Bully beef. The original owner was presumably a serviceman called Jack was and he created a souvenir for a loved one using another two biscuits, one including an inlaid photograph of himself and the other including an artificial flower decoration.This object is a rare piece. It is rare for items composed of edible goods to remain almost perfectly intact after a century after creation. This biscuit was presumably owned by the servicemand Jack who created a souvenir using another two similar biscuits. This is the story told by the Rev. C. Fraser of his two years as a Home Missionary of the Presbyterian Church in the Otway Ranges in 1891-2. The area covered was from Lorne to Peterborough. The booklet includes the names and activities of many settlers of the time and a description of the wreck of the Newfield. This book is of interest to researchers looking for information on the Otway Ranges settlers at the end of the 19th century. The author, Peter Bakker, has spent several years researching the part played by south western Victorian aborigines and this booklet details the results of this research.
