Trophy, Junior Challenge Shield 1936, 1932
This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it. There is a wire attached to the back of the shield for hanging on a wall. ‘Warrnambool Junior Football League’ ‘Junior Challenge Shield presented by J.V. Fairbairn Esq. Tin, Mid 20th century
This is an old tin which has been used as a first aid box by a scout group in Warrnambool. It appears to date from about the 1950s. Today there are two scout groups in Warrnambool and one in Allansford. The Warrnambool Norfolk group has its headquarters at the corner of Raglan Parade and Kepler Street and the Warrnambool Tooram group has halls at the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets and in Otway Road. This tin is of minor interest as an item that belonged to a local scout group in the mid 20th century. This is a rectangular metal box painted cream but with the paint peeling. The metal handle is rusted and there are two metal catches. On the side is a red cross taped on and a red cross painted on the top. There is a black hand-painted name. Inside the tin are two metal pins to hold the catches and a divider in the middle.1st W’boolscouting in warrnambool -

Administrative record - Account cards, 1920s and 30s
These cards have been used as an accounting system by the Warrnambool firm of J. Mainland and Co. This firm of watchmakers, opticians and manufacturing jewellers was established in Liebig Street in the late 1890s and continued on into the 20th century at 166 Timor Street. The cards date from the 1920s and 30s. It is noted that in 1932 one customer purchased a Clarice Cliff ash tray for six shillings and sixpenceThese cards are of considerable interest firstly they give us some details of the many customers of the Warrnambool jewellery firm of J. Mainland and Co and secondly because they provide us with much information on a great number of residents of Warrnambool and district in the 1920s and 30s (addresses etc)This is a collection of paper invoices, some original, some copied, with some in alphabetical order and some in number order. The invoices are separated by pieces of cardboard with either numbers or letters on the front. The collection is only portion of a larger set of cards. The invoices were originally held together by small pins.warrnambool jewellery stores -

Instrument - Ruler, 1930-1955's
This measuring ruler was used in the planning and making of components for the ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. Please see our record 3732 of the mode Sovereign of the Seas for further details of the ship and the maker. This ruler is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This ruler was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Ruler; folding wooden ruler, 36 inches long. Two small notches match with tiny pins when folded. Functional object - Key, circa 1866
The key is one of a collection of seven 1860s keys once belonged to the Glenample Homestead near Princetown. They are all keyed with different bits and would have opened the external panelled doors of the Georgian building. The keys would now be around 150 years old. The keys are now part of the John Chance Collection. Locksmiths became a recognised trade by the middle of the 19th century, doing work that blacksmiths and gunsmiths would have done. They were craftsmen and trained apprentices for their trade. The local community and businesses relied on them for making a wide variety of precision objects such as locks and keys, knives, ornamental and decorative latticework, fine instruments, accurate tools and hardware items. Glenample Homestead became famous after the disastrous wreck of the sailing ship Loch Ard on June 1, 1878. The owners, Hugh Hamilton Gibson and Peter McArthur, were involved in the rescue and recovery of Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce, the only two survivors, as well as overseeing the salvage of items from the shipwreck and the burial of those who lost their lives. Eva first met Jane Shields at Glenample and they became long-time friends. The keys are significant as an example of mid-19th century locksmith hardware, and for their connection with Glenample Homestead, and for their connection to the history of the Loch Ard shipwreck’s only two survivors. The set of keys also hold significance as they were discovered by John Chance, who was also a diver from the wreck of the Loch Ard in the 1960s-70s. Items that come from several wrecks along Victoria's coast have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. Glenample Homestead is of historical, social and architectural significance to the State of Victoria and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR H0392). It is a historical example of early settlement and development of a run in the coastal land of South West Victoria, and it is constructed from locally quarried sandstone but doesn’t take away from its Georgian design. Glenample Homestead is of State significance through its unique connection with the wreck of the ship Loch Ard and the connection to its owners, Hugh and Lavinia Gibson and Peter McArthur, played a historically and socially significant role in the rescue and care of the survivors, the salvage of goods and the burial of those who lost their lives. The shipwreck of the Loch Ard itself is of significance for Victoria and is registered on the Victorian Heritage Register (S417). Key; steel domestic door key. Flat open bow with 'figure 8' space, narrow collar on shank, close to the bow. Round shank flares out slightly above the collar on the bit.
