Edward Blatchford Wright was born in 1894 in Birmingham, son of Edward Wright and Florence Emuss. It is not known when he migrated to Australia but he served in the AIF during WW1, seeing action in France. On enlistment aged 20 years 9 months, he gave his occupation as farmer. He married Gertrude Matilda Wain in 1919. He came to Surrey Hills c1924. He was a grocer in the area for several decades with shops in Canterbury Road. In 1942 he is listed at 235 Union Road. This was a residential address. Alan Holt's Surrey Hills property register places him at 365 Canterbury Road (c1920-1930) and 359 Canterbury Road (c1930-1940). He died in 1972 in Mont Albert. His last electoral roll entry in 1968 gives 18 Serpentine Street, Mont Albert. 1. Lords Raceway trotting track was formally opened in November 1954 by Mr Galvin the Trotting Club's Chief Secretary. 2. Clothes/cloth rationing was in place from June 1942 till June 1948. Adults were allowed 112 clothing coupons per year. A ladies dress used 12 coupons, a pair of socks 4 coupons, and a man's suit used 38 coupons. Other items affected by rationing were butter, tea, sugar, eggs, tobacco, petrol and Meat. Butter and tea were rationed until 1950. 3. Marong Catholic Church had it's foundation stone laid in 1876 and the first services were held in1877. The church is now closed.1. The photo was featured in the Widows' Newsletter in November 1991 with the caption: A friendly game of cards. The reference number from the photographic studio 911016-36 means Frame 36 on 16 October 1991. During World War one and through to at least 1941, the "Mia Mia Tearooms" was a venue for wedding receptions and afternoon teas for convalescent soldiers.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Followed by an afternoon tea in the hall. The Reverend Peter Hoare will lead the worship service at Anne Caudle Centre at 2pm tomorrow assisted by members of the Kangaroo Flat congregation; another headed 'Uniting' a special dedication and musical afternoon will be held at Golden Square Church on Sunday October 12 at 2.30pm when further brick pavers inscribed with past worshippers names will be added to the Memorial Entry. Since the creation of this memorial at last years 150th anniversary several requests have been received for further pavers to be. Photograph of a 1926 Hudson Super 6 parked at the tea room/kiosk on the intersection of Riversdale Road and Warragul Road. Distinguishing features of the car include the triangular badge on the radiator and the unusual disc wheels. The 1926 Hudson also had horizontal radiator shutters. On this vehicle, a finer mesh has been attached in front of the shutters. This is normal practice when insects such as locusts are in plague. At the time, Warragul Road was known as East Boundary Road. Behind the car on the tramway pole is a colour light tramway signal for the single-line section between Warragul Road and the terminus. On 1 July 1928, the Wattle Park line was extended from Boundary Road via Riversdale Road to Elgar Road. It was built as a single track with a passing loop about halfway along, plus a passing loop at the former Boundary Road terminus. The tramway pole has a stop sign and a telephone box as well. In a box of negatives received is an envelope noting the car was owned by Ray Pearson and photo taken during the 1930s. Inside the motor car are two people, the driver, and a lady. In the background is part of the tea rooms located at this corner with a Shell gravity-fed petrol bowser.
