Headwear - Multicoloured Feather Cloche, 1950s
The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Circular woman’s hat covered with feathers of varying shapes and colours using a palette limited to cream, gold, brown and black. W. V. Hill Collection - William Valentine Hill was a journalist. He and his wife Annie and family came to 10 Pembroke Street in 1904. Jocelyn Hall notes suggest that the boy pictured is a son. If this is the case it would most likely be Albert Clement Hill born in 1902. The image looks too young to be a contemporaneous photo of him. None of the direct family have service records.A black and white photograph of a young boy's face framed by the words in an oval shape - "War Souvenir Advance Australia / 1916"In grey lead pencil on rear in Jocelyn Hall's handwriting: "Hill family / 10 Pembroke / St / SH/ Keep"william valentine hill (mr), albert clement hill (mr), pembroke street, surrey hills, fundraising events, stamps, ww1 -

Plaque - Commemorative
The Boer War took place from 11 October 1899 – 31 May 1902. Also known as the Anglo–Boer War, or the South African War, the conflict was fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics (the South African Republic and the Orange Free State) over the Empire's influence in Southern Africa. As part of the British Empire, the Australian colonies offered troops for the war. Samuel McGowan was born in North Ireland in 1845, immigrating to Australia in 1870. He arrived in Bendigo 1871 and having worked in a large engineering works at home was quickly able to find management work in foundries, later opening a legal manager's office growing this into one of the largest of its type in Bendigo. Samuel McGowan was elected a member of the City Council in 1883 and was elected Mayor in 1885 and again in 1899, resigning as a councillor in 1901. He was the treasurer of the Bendigo Hospital, a senior member of the Zenith Lodge and president of the Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society. Samuel McGowan and Kate Goyne from Epsom married on 29th August 1874. Samuel died in 1921 aged 76 and Kate in 1930 aged 78. Decorative object - Silver toned Tassel Clip on Earring from the Sarah Coventry Jewellery Range c.1970s-1980s
Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the earring has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. The direct selling party-plan business model Sarah Coventry was based on is also considered the first of its kind for jewellery.A single silver toned clip on earring with dangly tassels emerging from inside a floral shape engraved with a feathered pattern."SARAH COV" on back of earring clip sarah coventry, jewellery, wodonga, costume jewellery, vintage fashion jewellery, earring, earrings, clip on earrings -

Parks Victoria - Gabo Island Lightstation
Insulators
Modern communication tecnology arrived on Gabo Island with the construction of the telegraph line from Eden to Gabo Island in 1870. These and other cylindricial insulators were associated with the original 1870 copper wire telegraph line and later the P.M.G. line. The items of telegraphic equipment comprise a number of ceramic and glass insulators of varying age and type. Two bell-shaped insulators are made of clear glass, one with remains of wooden dowel inside. In addition to insulators, there is a telephone insulator bracket made of metal with wooden pins. It was once attached to the top of a steel pole and some of theseremain in situ along the former telegraph line. Telegraphic communication commenced at the Gabo Lightstation in 1870, just eight years after the lightstation opened. The line from Sydney reached Eden, NSW by 1868 and was then extended to Gabo with the costs shared equally by NSW and Victoria. It was initially carried on posts across the sea to the island but was changed to a line along the seabed after the posts were washed away. The first telegraph office was a timber building on east side of the assistants’ quarters. In 1887 a new concrete telegraph office was built which included quarters for the operator, with Victoria and NSW sharing the construction costs. The 1992 CMP identified remnants of the line from its various phases of operation,231 and these can still be seen in 2016. Other ceramic insulators in the collection are associated with lines supported on utility poles for the transmission of high voltage electricity. The various insulators have second level significance for their historic value and provenance1. Clear glass insulator. Cyndrical bottle shape with smaller dome -like knob on top. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Animal specimen - Barking Owl (Female), Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
Barking Owls are a nocturnal, medium sized bird of prey native to Australia, parts of Papua New Guinea, and the Moluccas. Average size ranges between 390-440mm in length. Females are generally slightly smaller than males and they are only one of a small number of owl species that do not exhibit marked sexual dimorphism. Barking Owls have characteristic vocalisations, ranging from a 'woof woof' barking dog sound, to shrill, human-like screams, which reportedly alarmed early European settlers to Australia. The Barking Owl's shrill and explosive vocalisation is sometimes associated with Bunyip mythology or referred to as 'the screaming woman call'. The female call is slightly higher in pitch than the male, and males and females often duet, contrasting low and high pitches. Barking Owls may be vulnerable in some parts of Australia due to woodland habitat loss. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This female Barking Owl is of an average size. It has brown, grey and white spots and vertical streaks. The face and breast are lighter in colour than the wings and the dorsal plumage. The glass eyes are large and dark in colour while the tarsi and toes are yellowish. This specimen stands on a wooden perch with identification tags attached to its leg. Textile - Quilt, By Wagga Design, 2017
‘By Wagga Design’ is the winner of the Art Quilt Australia 2019 Expressions: Wool Quilt Prize. Barbara Mellor, of St Helens in Tasmania, made this quilt after researching the history of waggas and was fascinated by this early form of recycling. ‘By Wagga Design’ is her contemporary take on the traditional wagga that was born out of hard times and limited resources. Barbara wrote the poem below while thinking of the workers who used waggas while travelling: Black night campfire night sheep in the shadows dreams on the track a comforting wagga stitched with love for a homesick heart. The wagga was made in 2017 and was first submitted into the Bay of Fires Art Prize. In 2018 the wagga was submitted into the Break O’Day Stitchers Quilting and Embroidery Exhibition, where it won the Hanger’s Prize. Barbara sourced the fabrics used from a variety of places. Some are from her personal collection while others were given to her. She purchased a woollen three-piece suit from a local op shop and decided to incorporate it into the design, making some unique and distinctive shapes. Another distinctive feature of the quilt is the patch labelled ‘Parkside’. Barbara noted that it was cut from a blanket she purchased from a garage sale from a property that had once been a caravan park titled ‘Parkside’ in the 1960s. The filling of the wagga contains the rest of the Parkside blanket.Quilt made from various woollen garments and bedding in cool tone colours. Patches mostly cut into square and rectangle shapes.
