Track racing commenced at Canterbury Park in 1936. Prior to this racing was held at Epsom and was Plumpton (open field)style racing. At Canterbury Park racing was held over a 340 yard track and up to 20 bookmakers attended. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was born in England in 1904 and worked as a nursing sister at Bendigo Base Hospital until her marriage to Alec Sandner in 1933. Mollie was an active member of the community and was particularly interested in raising the participation of girls in sports and the lack of competitive sports opportunities for girls led Mollie to create an inter school tennis competition in 1944. The Mollie Sandner Cup continues to be played today and Mollie was recognised by the Sportswomens' Association of Bendigo for her contribution to women's sports. Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. Bendigo's first ceremonial dragon, the "Duck Bill" dragon appeared in Easter parades 1892-1898. "Moon face" only appeared in 1900. "Loong" paraded from 1901-2019 before being retired due to it's age and fragility. In the meantime "Sun Loong" was seen from 1970-2019.
