Soldier has been identified as PTE Alan George William Hooke (11513). Alan was a Baker by trade. His father was William Hugh Hooke and his mother was Margaret Holloway Hooke. Alan was born in Rutherglen in 1893 and died in Melbourne in 1978. He is the older brother of Norman Hooke who was KIA in France 1916. Theodore Batterstedt and his father bought five acres of land on which they built a quartz crushing mill and a two storied, 8 roomed home in 1855. In 1869 they added 2 large rooms to each floor. In 1870 they sold the property to George Lansell. Further additions and renovations too place in 1888' 1890, 1900 and 1907. George Cruikshank (27 September 1792 – 1 February 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator.. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. George Cruikshank was inventive. In the 1800's, puns and other forms of word-play were loved by all. Some of these illustrations come from his 'Scraps and Sketches' album, published for adults in 1832, though the drawings were done between 1828 and 1832. Volumes of George Cruikshank's Scraps and Sketches were intended to be cut and pasted in home-made albums and scrapbooks; George Cruikshank was a well-known British caricaturist and book illustrator. This item represents this popular art form of the early to mid 19th century.A collection of artworks (copies of etchings) of George Cruikshank. They are bound together with masking tape. George Pethard (1885-1961) was born in Ballarat. His father, George, established a soft drink factory in Numurkah, producing "Taraxale". George Jnr., joined his fathers firm in 1898 and moved the factory to Bendigo in 1909. In 1909 he married Hilda Leed. His interests expanded and by 1918 he was an auctioneer in Rochester before becoming a real estate agent in Bendigo in 1921. His business empire expanded to include a Ford dealership and a service station in Bendigo in 1924. In 1938 he became a Bendigo councillor, a position he held for 20 years. George VI became King after his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936. Threepence coins underwent significant changes during George VI's reign. From 1937, new 12-sided nickel-brass threepence coins were introduced, which were initially used alongside the silver threepence. This coin is an example of a coin no longer in use.A brass coin - threepence. It is 12 sided. The reverse shows a Thrift plant (armeria) with three flowering stems. This is a Grade V Arithmetic book used by George Bonnett at Allans Forest School. The Bonnett family farmed in the Mepunga area on the Childers Cove Road. The Allans Forest State School, number 1086, was established in 1871 and closed in 1993. The first Head Teacher was Mr Bradhurst. The school closed in 1903 and re-opened in 1905 as a half-time school with Mepunga East and in 1908 it resumed as a full time school. This book is significant because it was used by George Bonnett at the Allans Forest State School and is a memento of both the Bonnett family of Mepunga and the Allans Forest State School, a school no longer existing. It is also of antiquarian interest as an example of arithmetic school text books used early in the 20th century. This is soft cover book of 128 pages. The cover is grey with black print and black lines around the edges of the front cover. The book has a prefatory note, arithmetical exercises and advertisements for other school text books published by Whitcombe and Tombs. The cover is torn and soiled and partly ripped away.
