Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in May 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grande Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob’s endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This document is significant because it documents the story of an important pioneer of Falls Creek.A 5 page indenture or contract typed on paper. This towel is a souvenir of the Centenary of Victoria celebrated in 1934. It marks the centenary of the officially-recognized first permanent European settlement at Portland with the arrival of the Henty families in 1834 in Victoria (then known as the colony of Port Phillip). European settlement occurred at Melbourne in the following year. This towel is one of many souvenir items produced in 1934.This towel is of minor interest as a memento of the centenary of Victoria. It is a comparatively rare souvenir of that event as towels such as this would have been used and most would not have survived for nearly 90 years.This is a white cotton towel with a white fringe at both ends. T. & C. Clark & Company Limited was based at Shakespeare Foundry in Wolverhampton England and was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark. The company grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton and were pioneering in the manufacture of enamelled cast iron cookware and sanitary wares. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T. & C. Clark were pioneers in the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteeing their products to be free of lead or arsenic. The company became the largest employer in Wolverhampton employing between 600 to 700 people.The item is significant as it was used as a domestic kitchen item to cook food safely without the concern that the metal interior may contain lead or arsenic as earlier cooking utensils had. The two etchings of Scots Presbyterian Church formerly in Adelaide Street Ringwood which was knocked down to make way for the development of Eastlands Shopping centre in the 1960s. The Pulpit and Window were moved to the Uniting Church in Station Street, Ringwood. The etchings were done by D.M. This wrought iron "ladder-frame" bookcase, which includes a drop-down table, is located in Suzy's bedroom. A second "ladder-frame" bookcase with desk is located in Penleigh's bedroom (item F085). They were both designed by Bruce Anderson - in the past they have been incorrectly attributed to Clement Meadmore. This type of furniture was featured in 'The Age' Small Homes Service and a similar one was featured in 'The Age' Dream Home Exhibition in 1955. From 1947 to 1953, Robin Boyd was the director of The Small Homes Service, set up by the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects in conjunction with 'The Age' and he produced a weekly article for 'The Age'.Wrought iron black frame with 10 ladder slots, and 3 cross brace frames, with 4 timber shelves. This photo shows the Storm Bird at the end of the jetty and the Wangrabelle in the foreground. Both ships were well known traders. the Wangrabelle became beached and wrecked in 1916 and the Storm Bird became obsolete when the railway from Bairnsdale to Orbost arrived in 1916. (ref. Story of Gippsland Shipping - J.C. Bull) At the start of the river trade goods were shipped from Marlo to Melbourne but when the railway reached Bairnsdale this became unprofitable and the ships plied only between Marlo and Cunninghame. Eventually river transport became economically unviable. The Wongrabelle is still buried in the sands of the entrance of the Snowy River (albeit where the entrance used to be). It took from April 11th 1912 to August 12th 1912 for the loss of the Wongrabelle to be complete, the final entry in the Orbost Shipping Co. records reads:- "The Wongrabelle is completely covered in sand." (ref River, Road, Railway Newsletter O.D.H.S.) There are many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor’s Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as family legend has it, she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. The Giles family collection is of social significance at a local level, because it not only illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill during it’s establishment.
