Jean Stirling , born 1901 in Orbost, married Charles Frances Reginald Joyes on 15th July 1922 in Orbost. Jean's father was John Stirling, son of James Stirling and Ann Gray. Her mother was Robina Harvey McNair, Aged 19 James Stirling arrived in Melbourne on January 26, 1842 with his family - parents, three sisters and two brothers. James Stirling moved around a lot to Whittlesea, Ballarat goldfields, Cunninghame, (now Lakes Entrance), then to the Old Station about 36 miles to the east along the coast near the mouth of the Snowy River and for a time settled there with his wife also from Wigton, Scotland, and their family four sons two daughters (James, John, William, George, Margaret and Polly). The first settler to occupy the Marlo township area was James Stirling around the year 1875. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. GRANT, Thomas (From Short Notes on Ringwood - RDHS) Born 1854, died 1933, aged 79 years. Thomas Grant, born in Burwood, Victoria, came to Ringwood in 1876. On land purchased from Mr. D. Gostick in Whitehorse Road, in the vicinity of the present Drive In Arcade, he built a blacksmith's and coach building shop. In 1880, he married Mary Ann French, of Mulgrave. There were four children, Andrew, Mary, (died in infancy) Thomas, and Margaret. Miss Margaret Grant is a well known resident of Mullum Road. With the opening of the station in 1882, activities in the growing district tended to congregate in its vicinity, and, in 1883, Mr. Grant moved his “smith" to the corner of Adelaide Street. At the same time, he planted out an orchard on his land which ran from Ringwood Street, to Warrandyte Road, and north as far as Mullum Greek. Eventually, about 1910, he sold his business to the Reed Brothers, and retired to the comparatively lighter life of orchardist and market gardener. In 1909, he sold 8 acres of his land to the Lilydale Council. This land, situated in Ringwood Street, behind the Town Hall, is known as the Ringwood Reserve. Mr. & Mrs. Grant were foundation members of the Methodist Church. He was appointed a Trustee in 1879, and served until his death 54 years later. He was an enthusiastic member of many societies, and he held public office in civic affairs. His interests included the Progress Association, Cricket Club, and the Agricultural Society, at whose annual show, he was a regular exhibitor. He served as a Councillor in the Lilydale Shire, repres¬enting Ringwood, from 1889 to 1894, and was a Justice of the Peace. 26278a Ledger belonging to First Blacksmith in Ringwood 1880s. She married Thomas Quinlivan in 1896 and they had the following children, Eileen (Eily) Teresa, 1898, John Francis, 1904 - 1906, Mary (Mae) Kathleen 1907 and Agnes Josephine 1909. Thomas and Mary ann ran the Royal Exchange Hotel on the corner of Peel and Mair streets in Ballarat, Victoria. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board making it the oldest site of technical education in Australia. The Board was concerned with the shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, and chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy , assaying and geology. With the decline in goldmining the direction of the college changed and broadened, the art School was established and the Ballarat Junior Technical School developed. In 1976, the tertiary sector seperated from the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat to form the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the 1980s SMB was a Community College of Technical Education and Further Education (TAFE) offering a wide range of vocational, enrichment and preparatory programs. It is continuing the tradition of providing for the educaiton needs of people within the Central Highlands. During the 1970s and 80s it acquired and refurbished old buildings and developed new facilities to keep up with the needs of an expanding curriculum and student population. (Chairman of the Teachers' tribunal from its inception in 1946 until 1954), Miss A. Bouchier, B.A., and Mr A.B. Jones, B.A. (Lecturers). In 1927 Miss P.A. Hamano joined the staff. Teaching practice and special rural school work were carried on in schools in or near Ballarat - drawing, crafts and singing were taught by local teachers. In 1927 the college moved to the old Ballarat East Town Hall (remodelled for their use) in Barkly Street. During 1927 the numbers in the College were augmented by twenty-six Manual arts students who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Arts students continued till 1930, when, on grounds of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers' College.\During the four succeeding years approximately sixty students annually entered the primary course. Inclusive of Manual Arts students, and private fee-paying students, exactly 400 trainees passed through the college in its brief span of life (1926-1931) Fourteen years were to pass before they were again opened to students on February 2nd, 1946. The college was re-commenced at S.S. Dana Street under the guidance of Mr W.F. Lord, M.C., M.M., B.A., Dip.Ed., (Acting Principal 1946-1950), and a staff consisting of Miss E.B. Hughes, B.A., Dip. Ed., Mr C.B. Bryan, B.A., V.Com., Dip.Ed., Miss M.H. Miller, L.Mus.A., and Miss G. Kentish, Dip.Phys.Ed. The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister for education at that time, the Hon. F. Field, M.L.A., accompanied by the Hon. T.T. Hollway, M.L.A., and the then Director of Education, Mr J.A. Seitz. It was originally intended to cater for women students only (for whom 130 Victoria Street was purchased as a hostel) but, at the last moment, men were also accepted. A co-educational college was thus set up instead, and has continued as such. The original Staff has been considerable augmented, and the number of Students has been more than trebled. 1951 saw the introduction of the two-year course, successful students being presented with the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate at the final College assembly each year. In December, 1855, College held its first Graduation Ceremony, with its own Graduation hymn, the words of which were written by Miss C.M. Canty of the staff. Mr Ellwood, former Principal,delivered the occasional address and presented the Ellwood Prize to the outstading student of the year (Mr C.P. Handreck). Students who had successfully completed the course received their certificates from Mr E.B. Pederick, Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. College accomodation having been strained for several years, it was pleasant news when tenders were called in July, 1956, for the building of the first section of the new Ballarat Teachers' College in Gillies Street, near the Botanical Gardens. At the beginning of 1958 the new College was occupied, and staff and students have appreciated greatly the appointments and cacilities of the new buildign. In 1968 the three-year Diploma Course began, co-existent with the other courses which will continue during the transitional period. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. A few examples of these items have survived the years.” The purpose of a doily case was to hold embroidered or crocheted doilies or small mats, which were used on plates to serve cakes and similar items. This case was designed and made by Daisy Elvena Dale, born on 27 October 1899, the youngest child of Ellis and Anne (nee Lees) Dale, of Latrigg, Wangoom, Warrnambool. The doilies in the case are a mixed collection sewn by children, which my mother collected over the years. Daisy Dale made this doily case before her marriage in 1922; it was a tradition for brides to have a 'glory box' containing linen and embroidered articles to take to their new home. A skilled dressmaker, Daisy began her apprenticeship at two shillings and sixpence per week at Miss A. E. Emery's dressmaking establishment at 150-152 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. Considered to be the leading house of fashion in Warrnambool, Miss Emery employed about eight young women who worked long hours to sew elaborate gowns for clients, including wives of graziers who would attend the race carnivals and social functions in Warrnambool.
