James Oddie had returned from travels abroad and gave a speech at the Ballarat Art Gallery concerning the pleasure and importance of being a benefactor during one's lifetime in the light of Christian beliefs.The article indicates the esteem in which Oddie was held and notwithstanding other benefactors' contributions to Ballarat. And It's badly wanted at the officers' mess of the Royal Australian Artillery, 3rd Div., in Batman av., Melbourne. A formal application for It was made, In writing, to the Art Gallery by Brigadier W. Hall, commanding offlfncer. But Art Gallery members at their meeting yesterday said "No." Lending it or giving it away would "create a dan- gerous precedent for the Gallery," they decided. . "Any anyway," said Mr. W. Little, the Gallery's curator, "Brig. Hall has erred in thinking the men depicted in the painting are artillerymen. This catalogue was written by Joan Luxemburg for the Art Gallery of Ballarat Exhibition of James Meek works (13th June to 9th August 2015). It is not intended as a full biography of James Meek and concentrates on his decorative works. Joan Luxemburg has spent many years researching the life and works of James Meek and the exhibition and catalogue are part of a PhD project at Federation University. A biography of James Meek by Joan Luxemburg is due for publication in 2016. English-born James Meek, a fisherman, cannery operator, poet, writer, explorer in the Otway district, librarian, calligrapher and accountant, was one of the first settlers in Ballarat, building the first house and establishing a cordial and sly grog business. After some time in Melbourne he came to the Warrnambool area, becoming an early settler in the Peterborough area and establishing a cannery there. In Warrnambool he set up a commercial fishing company which failed, organized an Otways exploration trip looking for gold and established a reputation for producing fine calligraphy works. He was in New Zealand from 1874 to 1890 and died in Warrnambool in 1899. This catalogue is important because it records the decorative works of James Meek, an important early settler in Warrnambool and district. Meek was well-known in Warrnambool in the 1850s and 60s as a commercial fisherman, an Otways explorer, a writer and lecturer and a calligrapher. One of his daughters married Peter Dallimore, a fellmonger at Lake Gillear and the Dallimore family is also prominent in our history. The Art Gallery of Ballarat 2015 Exhibition of Meek works featured one of our Meek documents, a Fidler Family tree.This is a catalogue with a reinforced plastic-covered cover. In January 1974, 103 years after the establishment of the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB), Dorothy made history by becoming the first woman appointed to the SMB Council. Norma Bull is an Australian painter who is most famous for her paintings and sketches made during World War II in Britain as an official war artist. Bull was a finalist in the Archibald prize twice, in 1952 and 1953. This is a printed invitation to the opening of an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat in June 2015. The exhibition was of the art works and calligraphy of James Meek. It was curated by Joan Luxemburg who is writing a book on James Meek’s life and work. James Meek was an important 19th century fisherman, fish curer, accountant, writer, gold explorer and calligrapher. His art works are prized for their historical content and their illustrations of the work of a calligrapher at its best. This card is important as it concerns the art works of James Meek. He was important in the history of Ballarat, Peterborough and Warrnambool in the 19th century. In the latter town he was a well-known punt operator, a gold explorer, a writer and lecturer and a fish company operator. Several of his important calligraphy works were produced in Warrnambool. Richard Hartley Smith Abbott was the step son of Joseph Henry Abbott and inherited his families business interests, building successful commercial enterprises such as Abbott Supply Co. He was elected a representative in the Mandurang riding in the Shire of Strathfieldsaye in 1887, served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1917 - 1918 and a member of the legislative Council of Victoria. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 30/12/1999 Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled John Emery and His Associates. John Emery was a tailor who had a business in Raywood. He moved to Bendigo where he set up his business as a tailor, draper and clothing mercer at the corner of Pall Mall and Mitchell Street. The shop was close to the Beehive Exchange, where he invested in the quartz mining companies. He took on a partner, T S Gibson, who was a clothier. Emery was involved in the Bendigo Bowling Club and St Paul's Church. Later he travelled and became a collector of curios. He donated sculptures to the Bendigo Art Gallery and loaned a number of paintings. Copy of a piece about Richard Hartley Smith Abbott. Abbott was born in Bendigo. He was a hardware merchant, it operated as Abbot Supply Co. He was a director of the Bendigo gas Co, Sandhurst Building Society and Sandhurst Trustees Co. He also helped pioneer tanning in Australia and he had his tannery in Mandurang. He served on the Strathfieldsaye Council and later the Bendigo City Council. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1907 and in 1932 served as a Senator. In 1887 he was on the committee to establish an art gallery. He served on the School of Mines Council. In 1910, he attended a meeting about Miners' Phthisis in Bendigo. He invested in the Bendigo mines and his firm was a major supplier of various hardware for the mining companies. Danish brothers, Moritz, Julius and Jacob Cohn arrived in Bendigo in 1853 and by 1856 started making cider and soft drinks, building a brewery 1880 to further extend their commercial enterprises and stock their hotels with their own brand of beer. Having sent Moritz's son, (also Julius) to Germany to learn to brew, the Cohn Brothers began to produce Excelsior Lager in 1882, which was traditionally served cold, the first time this had been done in Australia. Overtime the Cohn brothers expanded their operations adding cordials and in 1916 produced a non-alcoholic beer to satisfy the temperance activists. This label is associated with a non alcoholic larger originally named Tonic Ale but re-named 6 o’clock Lager after the temperance advocates succeeded in having pubs close at six o’clock. Cohn Brothers built an empire of breweries, cordial factories, hotels and liquor stores and ice works. In 1925 they sold the hotels and breweries to Carlton & United but continued to make their other products until the 1970s when the company became part of the Coca Cola Amatil Group. Jacob Isaac Cohn was born in 1830 (died 1911) in Horsens Denmark and entered the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1863 where he served as a member for three years, returning again in 1887 to serve as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1888-1889. Jacob Cohn was a great supporter of the Mechanics Institute, the Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum. It is believed that through his connection with the Mechanics Institute he exhibited some loaned engravings from the Dresden Art Gallery which were then donated to the City of Bendigo, forming the nuclei of the Art Gallery's collection. Jacob Cohn held the position of President of the Art Gallery for 18 years.Oval larger label.
