A badge made for War Widows Guild members to wear to show they were members. The Kookaburra is the symbol of the Guild. From the War Widows' Guild of Australia website: 'the Guild badge would feature the kookaburra, an industrious and cheerful bird who mated for life, was fearless and aggressive in the defence of its young and the area of territory it regarded as its own. The bird also had a unique call, not a song but a laugh; a chortle of rollicking mirth (to bring the widows back to laughter). Also, the kookaburra is a typically and completely Australian symbol, one that could be worn proudly by every widow whatever her creed or ideals. The kookaburra was also the mascot of the 7th Division of the 2nd AIF, commanded by Mrs Vasey’s husband, Major-General Vasey. Mrs J M Vasey was the founder and president of the War Widows Guild. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After her husband Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild, established on 22 November 1945. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this badge, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. This badge comes from the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums and is presumably attached to an item of clothing. The Warrnambool Pipe Band was formed in 1906, originally to popularise Scottish music and later to foster a taste for bagpipe music. Simon Fraser, the first Pipe Major, held the position from 1906 to 1910. The band appears to have gone into recess during the latter years of World War One and was apparently re-formed in 1935. Again in World War Two the band was in recess The band has had several changes of title but is today known as the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. The badge is of interest as an example of one of the badges belonging to Warrnambool & District Pipes and Drums, an important and long-serving band in Warrnambool. This is a multi-coloured cloth badge, circular in shape. The outside edge is machine stitched in yellow and there is a blue band with the wording in yellow ‘Warrnambool & District Pipes and Drums’. In the inner circle there is an image, in colours of white, red, yellow, black and dark blue, of two drums, a staff and bagpipes stitched on a blue background. The former City of Kew in Victoria issued badges to council employees performing public roles. The Society has other badges issued by the City for roles such as Parking Attendant, Swimming Pool Attendant etc. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. This badge is believed to be part of a uniform of an officer of the Salvation Army. It could be either a collar or a hat badge. The Salvation Army, a Christian organization, came to Warrnambool in 1887 with the arrival of Captain and Mrs John Moyle and Lieutenant William Sanderson. Their first place of worship was a Raglan Parade grain store. Today the Warrnambool Salvation Army citadel and associated buildings are in Koroit Street.This badge is of interest as an early example of the badges worn by Salvation Army personnel in Warrnambool. This is a metal badge,( possibly silver), in the shape of a shield with an inner circle with a red background and images of a cross, the letter ‘S’ and two crossed swords. This inner circle is surrounded by a circular blue rim with gold lettering and outside this circle is a jagged rim with sixteen points. On top of the centre circles is a crown with some red colouring. The metal clip at the back of the badge is missing. The badge is somewhat tarnished. The back of the badge has three hallmarks. This item was donated to Wodonga Historical Society by the artist, Betty L. Barberis. Betty Barberis nee Barton was one of 12 children born to Roderick Barton and Myrtle Ann Hore of Gundowring in the Kiewa Valley. She was born in 1927 and attended Upper Gundowring Primary School. Betty was encouraged to enter a project for the "Young Farmers" by illustrating a book. She won first prize for Victoria and the book was exhibited at the Royal Melbourne Show. This resulted in Betty attaining a Manual Art Teacher's Studentship which she completed at Wangaratta Technical School. Here she learned many new skills ranging from garment design to ceramics. She also attended Melbourne Teachers College. Betty created many decorative banners, the first being for the Australian section of the World Scout Jamboree in 1948. Over her long career she was to create many other banners and commissioned work including these badges for the Australian Antarctic Research Expedition in 1982. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She also illustrated several books and had exhibitions in many galleries including in Albury.
