'Black Day' was part of a series of paintings drawn from a larger body of work produced over a four-year period exploring the 'harsher side' of the Australian landscape and the aftermath of extreme weatehr events and climatic occurences of fire, flood, drough and wind. Although loosely based on real places and events, the works are essentially fictional with ideas gleaned from popular media - telveision, Internet, magazines and newspapers. While my return to abstraction and landcape painting from figuration has been relatively recent, the natural environment has always been informed by my artistic practice regardless of subject matter, and has had always informed my artistic practice regardless of subject matter, and has had a long-standing influence on the aesthetics, the compositional structre and imagery in my work. The flattening of the picture plane and the prominent horizontal and vertical marks in my composition are informed by a response to both natural and man-made interventions in the land - the muted and restricted colour palette echoing my response to extrems in environmental changes, particulalry of cental and western ditrict Victoria. Created in the studio environment, I consisder this boxy of work as being imaginative 'conglomerates' which reflect varying perspectives and textural interpretrations of the land - defining and expresssing my response to particular and significant climatic, environmental events and my personal experiances. Michelle ZUCCOLO Born Orbost, Victoria Between 2004 and 2007 Michelle Zuccolo undertook a Master of Arts, (Visual Arts part-time by research) at the University of Ballarat (later Federation University Australia). Her BA (Fine Art) was awarded by the Victoria College of Art and Design, and she has a DipEd from Melbourne College of Advanced Education. Dale HICKEY (31 July 1937- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria' Dale Hickey studied design and illustration at Swinburne Technical College, Melbourne, graduating in 1957. In 1968, his work was exhibited in the inaugural exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria’s Southbank site, The Field, which showcased Australian paintings, sculpture and conceptual works. A large-scale retrospective of his work was held at Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in 1988. More recently, in 2008, The Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne presented Dale Hickey: Life in a Box, which brought together 36 key works from the artist’s 40 year career. Marshall White is a former Merri-bek resident and artist. He completed a Fine Art diploma at the National Gallery Art School in 1973. After a severe motorcycle accident left him with quadriplegia in 1977, he returned to university, earning a Master in Painting from what is now the Victorian College of the Arts. White is considered a pioneer of digital art in Victoria. He taught art to inmates at Pentridge Prison, which provided him with access to early computers. Using a Commodore Amiga, Marshall pushed the boundaries of digital art. Strip 1 represents an early contribution to what was, at the time, an emergent art form. Inspired by William Blake and Arthur Boyd, White’s work delves into psychological spaces, addressing themes such as the apocalypse and White’s distain of religion. Sally MILLER (1949-2015) Sally Miller completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Fine Art at the Sydney College of the Arts, and in 1995 a Master of Arts, Visual Arts by research at Deakin University. Miller lectured at the Ballarat University College (later Federation University) School of Arts in Printmaking and Drawing from 1994-1998, where her roles included Coordinator, Honours Program, Coordinator Printmaking, Lecturer in Printmaking and Honours Supervisor. In 2000 Sally Miller was an invited Artist-in-Residence and guest lecturer in Drawing and Printmaking at the School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra. Sydney PERN (c1876-1967) Dr Sydney Pern began practicing medicine in Yarram before setting up practice in Ballarat. He was a competent artist, and as an amateur anthropologist collection Aboriginal artefacts during travels in Central and Northern Australia. Dr Sydney Pern died aged 91 on 23 October 1967, and is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. The ethnographic collection was housed at his home, 10 Raglan Street North, before being donated to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum. When the museum was closed in the 1960s Dr Pern requested that the collection pass to the City Council, and from there it was housed at the Gold Museum. An artwork by Sydney Pern was exhibited in the 1958 Crouch Prize at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In 1994 Jeff was awarded a Master of Arts from La Trobe University. He then studied at the prestigious Slade School, London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Rodney SCHERER (24/02/1951 - ) Born Campbelltown, NSW Rodney Scherer studied at the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College (1968 -1972); the Canberra School of Art (1973-75) Dip, Art Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (1978); and a Grad, Dip, Art (Painting) at Gippsland Institute of Advanced Educaton (1985). He curated a number of significant exhibitions for the Gippsland region of Victoria, including the first national travelling exhibition of regional artist "Contemporary Gippsland Artists 1990-92". Rodney Scherer is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, Curator, retired Public Gallery Director, and fine art consultant. He was the founding chair of the Art Resource Colelction, arcYinnar. He was an Artist in Residence at teh Gippsland TRades and Labour Council, Yallourn Power Startion in 1991, and site manager of the Fifth Sculpture Triennial at the 1992 Melbourne International Arts Festival. This framed copy of a sketch of John Ruskin comes from the original steel plate engraving dating from about 1845. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a notable English writer, philosopher, art critic and polymath in the Victorian era. He was the first Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University and was a prolific writer interested in the connection between nature, art and society, anticipating the more modern interest in environmental and sustainability issues. This framed item is from the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum which was first established in 1871 by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute under the curatorship of a local policeman, Joseph Archibald. This first museum faded away but was revived in 1883 by Joseph Archibald in his retirement years. The Museum continued as part of the Mechanics' Institute until 1963 as an important and much-admired institution. Most of the collection was lost over the years but some items remain, housed at the Warrnambool Art Gallery, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and the Warrnambool and District Historical Society, with the John Ruskin item being part of the latter group's collection.This item is of considerable interest, firstly because it comes from the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum and secondly because it shows the local interest in the 19th century of the notable English writer and philosopher, John Ruskin. This is a copy of a steel plate engraving, a black and white sketch of the head and upper body of John Ruskin. It is enclosed in a cut glass frame with a red cardboard backing attached by metal clips. A section of the backing is torn off and there is damage to the bottom part of the glass frame.J. This fine Reeves paint brush was used in the making of components for the ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. REEVES - Reeves & Sons Ltd, makers of fine art supplies, operated under this name in London, England, 1891-1976. The company was founded as Thomas Reeves and Son in 1784. SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS - Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. This brush is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This brush was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. Robert JENYNS (1944 - 16/11/2015) Born Melbourne, Victoria Bob Jenyns' career spanned over four decades. Producing sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings hee has participated in many of Australia's most significant art exhibitions including the first Biennale of Sydney (1973), the 1973, 1975 and 1978 Mildura Sculpture Triennials, the 1981 Australian Perspecta, the 2nd Australian Sculpture Biennale, and the 1990 Sculpture Triennial. Jenyns was a finalist in the 2006 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, and in 2007 won the award with his work Pont de l'archeveche. At the age of 16 Jenyns studyied advertising art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. He then studied fine art with artist/teachers including Ken Scarlett, Kenneth Jack and Fred Cress, and night life drawing classes at the National Gallery schools under John Brack. After graduating the 20 year old Jenyns taught sculpture and carving at Aspendale Technical School (Melbourne). Two years later he moved to Daylesford and where he taught art until 1978, having received teaching qualifications from Hawthorn Teachers College in 1972. From 1979 Jenyns was based in Tasmania, initially lecturing in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art and later serving as head of the sculpture department until 2005. David FRAZER (1966- ) Born Foster, Victoria, Australia David Frazer works in painting, wood engraving, etching, lithography and bronze. His work offers a nostalgic image of Australia through its examinations of landscape, Australian buildings, sheds, and itinerant travellers. He has held seven solo exhibitions between 1996-2006 in Melbourne, Sydney and a survey show curated by the Horsham Gallery, which toured Victorian regional galleries from 2004-2005. David Frazer’s work was seen in 37 group exhibitions between 1996-2006 including the 5th British International Miniature Print Exhibition in the UK, in the 2003. Robert JENYNS (1944- 16/11/2015) Born Melbourne, Victoria Bob Jenyns' career spanned over four decades. Producing sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings he has participated in many of Australia's most significant art exhibitions including the first Biennale of Sydney (1973), the 1973, 1975 and 1978 Mildura Sculpture Triennials, the 1981 Australian Perspecta, the 2nd Australian Sculpture Biennale, and the 1990 Sculpture Triennial. Humour and subtle satire is a focus of his work. Jenyns was a finalist in the 2006 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, and in 2007 won the award with his work Pont de l'archeveche. At the age of 16 Jenyns studyied advertising art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. He then studied fine art with artist/teachers including Ken Scarlett, Kenneth Jack and Fred Cress, and night life drawing classes at the National Gallery schools under John Brack. After graduating the 20 year old Jenyns taught sculpture and carving at Aspendale Technical School (Melbourne). Two years later he moved to Daylesford and where he taught art until 1978, having received teaching qualifications from Hawthorn Teachers College in 1972. From 1979 Jenyns was based in Tasmania, initially lecturing in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art and later serving as head of the sculpture department until 2005. Sotheby's is a British multinational corporation headquartered in New York City. It is one of the world's largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewelry, real estate, and collectibles. The catalogue was prepared for a Sotheby's auction in Paris. On page 36 of this catalogue is a description, photograph and detailed provenance of the Morton mask sold by Orbost & District Historical society in 2008. Harold Brocklebank Herbert (16.09.1891-1945) Harold Herbert was one of the first pupils at the school starting in 1891, commencing as a 15 years old he studied Applied Design and Architecture at the Ballarat Technical School of design attached to the Ballarat Fine Art Galery, transferring to the Ballarat Technical Art school attached to the Ballarat School of Mines. He was a certificated Art Teacher with the Victorian Education Department. His talents were identified by Ballarat’s Ponsonby Carew-Smith who rose to become Art Inspector with the Victorian Education Department. His teaching career included being appointed Principal of the Sale Technical Art School in 1898. Harold Herbert undertook further studies in England returning to Ballarat with all new entrepreneurial ideas. He worked at the Ballarat Technical Art School between 1915-19. Harold Herbert was involved with the design of the Ballarat Arch of Victory, and was responsible for the reproductions in ‘The Education Department’s Record of War Service. Had been principal of the Sale Technical Art School since 1898, and had undertaken further studies in England returning to Ballarat with all sorts of entrepreneurial ideas. In 1924 the Ballarat School of Mines Students’ Magazine reported “We are perfectly safe in claiming on behalf of our school, that no institution of its kind has turned out a greater number of men and women students who have since “made good” while some have achieved enviable prominence in the world of art. Amongst these later, the most brilliant is Harold B. Herbert whose work is so widely and justly appreciated throughout Australia and whose achievements are watched by his old school with the greatest pride. He commenced at the School when he was about 15 years of age, and followed a course of training very similar to what most students are doing the most valuable qualities shown by him during his career as a student were a passion for drawing and a capacity for taking pains, so essential in all artwork. He was appointed as Assistant Art Teacher at Ballarat on completion of his course, and later assistant in the office of Art Inspector. All of his spare time was devoted to out-door sketching and commercial drawing and he showed an ability in practical design for various crafts quite equal to the ability he has since displayed in depictive art. His return to this School as senior master and his departure to devote himself entirely to fine art are quite recent happenings with which all students are familiar. The wonderful exhibition he held in Melbourne on return from a sketching trip abroad has place him amongst the leading artists of Australia. Upon his death in 1945 the Ballarat School of Mines Student's Magazine recorded: "The death of the famous water-colour artist, Harold Herbert, will be a distinct loss to art in Australia. he was educated at the Ballarat Art School which it was situated in Sturt Street, and the gave promise of becoming a famous artist then. his talents were recognised, and in water-colour work he quickly made a name for himself. his landscapes in water-colour are in the principle galleries of the world, and many of them are to be found in the Ballarat gallery and in other provincial galleries. In 1941 he was appointed official war artist for the COmmonwealth, and he served in the Middle East and Syria. Exhibitions of his war pictures have been seen at different times in Melbourne."Portrait of a young man in a suit.
