Document, Spying on the Goldfields by Ralph Birrell, Dissatisfaction over the licence issue that festered on the Victorian Goldfields during the early 1850s, might be said to have its genisis at Reid's Creek on the Ovens goldfield. Soon it spread to other fields and particularly to Bendigo Creek where in 1853 it found overt expression in protest meetings and in the formation of the Red Ribbon Movement. This programme details the bands that participated in the 1934 brass band contests at South Street. Called the "Centenary" contest, it was a celebration of the first 100 years of the State of Victoria and attracted bands from across Australia and New Zealand. Special guests were the Duke of Gloucester and the Band of His Majesty's Grenadier Guards who were touring Australia at the time. The contest included all grades of bands and was judged a huge success.This programme is significant as it signifies a major historical even on the brass band calendar and the visits of eminent people from England. It also displays all the band from around Australia and New Zealand that took part, and the grades that they participated in. This programme shows how a typical brass band contest at South Street would have been run and the sections that were available to competitors. The item is a small programme printed on yellowed paper and covered with a soft card cover. This apron was designed for the Ballarat Apron Festival by local designer Clare Schreenan of Clasch Designs Ballarat. The tartan fabric was designed by Art Gallery of Ballarat for the 2014 exhibition “For Auld Lang Syne: Images of Scottish Australia, from the First Fleet to Federation”, and is officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. The colours are highly significant: grey being chosen for the basalt plains on which Ballarat is built upon; Blue and white representing the Eureka Flag; and yellow for the gold that has made Ballarat so famous. Born in Ballarat, Schreenan attended Loreto College before studying fashion at Melbourne College of Textiles. She has worked extensively in Sydney, travelling to Paris, London and Los Angeles for work projects. She returned to Ballarat in 2006, launching Clash Design. Featuring the official, highly symbolic Ballarat tartan, and made by highly renowned local designer Clare Schreenan, this contemporary apron is of local significance to the Ballarat community. Slaughterhouse Hill was so named because Bennett's butchers had a slaughterhouse there.A view of Linton taken from Slaughterhouse Hill to the north-east of the town. In July 1840, Glenfine, consisting of 31,440 acres, was acquired by Thomas Downie. In March 1842 the 'Right of Run' was taken up by Thomas Chirnside who with an imported stallion 'Delapre' ran a horse stud. He apparently lived here for ten years and employed a gardener with a wife and five children from Hobart, Tasmania. Only some blocks of stone and a few trees remain of their homestead. In 1853 the property was transferred to Dr. John Chirnside, an elder brother of Thomas. I, 1857, William Rowe of Naringal purchased Glenfiine where he and his family lived until 1904 when it was bought by Richard Howell's estate. It was then 39,000 acres. The present house was built by the Rowes in 1872 of bluestone quarried on the property with a cement render overall. The architect was H.R. Casselli. In 1911 R.C. Howell, son of Richard, became the owner, followed by his son in 1960. Gold was found on the property and by 1898 the township of Hollybush was first reported, situated at either side of the front entrance, on the Cressy Road. The land for the township was given by William Rowe. By 1990 Hollybush had a population of 426 persons. All of the early history of Glenfine, documents etc., were destroyed when Naringal homestead was burnt down in 1944. Glenfine was classified by the National Trust in 1974 and is on the Heritage Commission Register.
