His Excellency, Hwang Hon Cheng, from Peking, China, visited Australia from 1906 -1907 as Chinese Commissioner in response to an urgent petition from well respected Chinese business leaders, The 1906 Petition was sent to the Chinese Ambassador in Britain requesting the appointment of a Chinese Consular Representative in Australia to ease the escalating Discrimination and address the Immigration Restrictions in Australia. Hwang Hon Cheng visited Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne , Adelaide and Hobart and after reviewing his recommendations Britain agreed to the appointment of the first Chinese Consul-General to Australia. In 1908 Mr Leong Lan Fun, Taotal of Swatow was appointed Consul-General for the Commonwealth with his headquarters in Melbourne. Animosity, suspicion and misunderstanding had existed between Chinese and European settlers since the Gold Rush of 1850’s. Language, customs, frugality and mostly their ability to obtain profit from crops seen as uneconomical by Europeans eg parsley, garlic and salad vegetables. Many of the Chinese workers did not purchase land instead their main aim was to obtain enough money for their family and return to China. There were a few still managing market gardens around East Bentleigh until the 1950’s, by which time they were highly regarded by the general community. By 1950 Hotel Bellfield was owned by Mr and Mrs McMullin In June 1952 the staff quarters at the rear of the main building was destroyed by fire. The site has been worked intermittently until fairly recent times (Christmas Hills Past and Present (Yarra Glen & District Historical Society, 2004) ) Advertiser (Hurstbridge, Vic. : 1922 - 1939), Friday 14 November 1930, page 1 ________________________________________ QIJEENSTOWN Death of Mr. John Nink One of the oldest and highly-respected settlers in the person of Mr. John Nink, aged 61 years, passed to his rest on November 10 at his residence, Peach Grove, Queenstown North; after suffering from what is known as miners' complaint. The late Mr. Nink has lived in the district practically all his life and died at the home formerly occupied by his father; Some years ago he conducted a peach orchard, which was one of the sights of Queenstown. He was recently engaged in mining at One Tree Hill with Mr. Otto Muller. He took an active part in public affairs, and was a trustee of the mechanics' institute, recreation ground and cemetery trust. He had a happy disposition, was very hospitable and always merry, which made for him friends all over the district. He leaves a wife, and was the father of Alice (Mrs. Christian), Charles, Robert, William and Minnie (deceased); and the brother of Joseph: (deceased), Henry, Johanna (Mrs. Tonge), Frederick, Mary (Mrs. Antonie) and Robert. His relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The remains of deceased yere interred in Smith's Gully cemetery on Wednesday, and his popularity was shown by the large cortege, amongst the mourners being ex-Cr. Zerbe !(Doncaster), Messrs. Carlyle. Exton, Harris (Kinglake), Birch (Christmas Hills), P. J. McMahon (shire secretary), Crs. Hewitt and Ryan (North Riding), and Cr. D. Murphy (Whittlesea shire). The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Father Lande (Diamond Creek), and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Reproduced from "The Leader" 14th Aug. 1897, page 7 The "Black Swan" mine - on Captain Selby's property of 200 acres. Discovered by Captain Selby 8 years ago. He is working it himself. 'The shaft is down 70 feet and with deeper sinking the reef is found to increase in width. Nearly £2,000 has been obtained from this mine, the gold being of high quality, fetching £4-1-6 per oz.' A short distance upstream from the old wooden Warrandyte Bridge, the Yarra river was at one time dammed to give power to a large wooden waterwheel which drove a plant for crushing gold. Up until around 1908 the waters of the Yarra, pent up by a stone weir, forced their way past this old wheel turning it to crush the precious quartz. In 1925 the reamins of the State Battery were removed. The large water wheel (thanks to the forethought of a local resident, Mr. P. Reproduced on p21 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Mrs. R. Thornton notifies that she has taken over the Kangaroo Ground Hotel from Mr. Walker, and the house will be made attractive for weekenders, the table, wines, and spirits being A1 quality" - Advertiser 7 July, 1922" Mrs Ruby C. Thornton sold her interest in the Kangaroo Ground Hotel in September 1928 and moved away after seven years in the district. This photo is therefore dated between July 1922 and 1928. Other newspaper articles identify Mrs Thornton's first name. The lady to the left of frame appears to be taking a photograph of the car in front of the hotel. This may be Mrs Ruby Thornton taking a picture of her car in front of her hotel. A young boy with others standing near their horse and buggy look on. The property was destroyed by fire at 1.45 am on Friday 8 August 1930. The licensee was Mr Hugh Crichton who had taken over from Ruby Thornton. He and his wife just managed to escape the fire with nothing but their night attire. The property was owned by Mr Bruce Donaldson of Ivanhoe and had been erected over 60 years earlier (according to the Advertiser). Kangaroo Ground pioneers James Johnston (died 1895) with his wife Elizabeth commenced building this stone house on his Pretty Hill property, Kangaroo Ground in 1842. It was one of the oldest homes in the district till 1938 when new owner Mr Percy Cope, a master builder demolished the old building and a new brick building was erected in its place. William Bell was born in Scotland and arrived aboard the 'David Clark' October 1839 and settled at Kangaroo Ground. Died at "Hitchill" Kangaroo Ground (now Seven Oaks) "Mary Ann Bell - Yarra Flats, a native of Scotland, born in 1834, came to Australia with her parents in 1841. Her husband, the late Mr. William Bell (born in 1831) came to Australia in 1839, and was on the Diamond Creek diggings for a few years. About 1851, Mr Bell went to Yarra Flats and purchased a station of 640 acres, where he carried on grazing and farming until his death in 1877, when he was buried in the Yarra Flats cemetery. .. John Bell - Bell, John J.P. Kangaroo Ground, a Scotchman by birth, born in 1819, came out to Melbourne in 1839 in the ship David Clarke, and after remaining in Melbourne one year, and for a short time at Bulleen, went in 1841 to Kangaroo Ground, and purchased 160 acres of land where he now resides, having also 270 acres at Yarra Flats. At the time he settled on the Kangaroo Ground there were but three people in the district, of whom two were shepherds, and the entire country was bush. Mr John Bell’s father, the late Mr. William Bell, first purchased land, and with the assistance of his sons, cleared, fenced, and subdivided it. Mr John Bell has been a member of the shire council since its formation, and for the past twelve years has been a justice of the peace; and he is a member of the National Agricultural Society of Victoria. He has three sons and two daughters, all married. from "Victoria and its Metropolis: Past and Present" written in 1888 by Alexander Sutherland. Photo of two teams: Eltham Cricket Club versus a District combined side taken at Eltham Park at the conclusion of a match between Eltham Club and a team made of players from various District clubs. The photograph was taken by Mr. Beaumont the then well known photographer of Hawthorn. Local identities in the photo include Ewen Hugh Cameron, Charles Symons Wingrove who were umpires on the day. Tom Horan a cricketer who had played for Victoria and Australia is also identified. Earlier options were that this photograph was of Kangaroo Ground Cricket Club at Eltham. ..The photograph was taken on 19th February 1887, at the conclusion of a match between Eltham Cricket Club and a team made of players from various District clubs. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. OPENING CEREMONY. The opening of the railway line from Heidelberg to Eltham took place on the 6th inst. The special train, containing a large number of members of Parliament, including Mr Trenwith, the Minister for Railways, left Prince's Bridge at half-past eleven, and arrived at Eltham at twenty minutes past twelve. The party was accompanied by Mr Fitzpatrick, Acting Commissioner for Railways; Mr Lockhead, the Traffic Manager; and Mr Norman, Engineer for Existing Lines. On arrival, the visitors were entertained at a banquet in the marquee, of which a photograph is given, erected close to the railway station. Mr E. H. Cameron, M.L.A., the member for the district, occupied the chair, and, seated on his right, was Mr Mason, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and on his left the Minister of Rail-ways. After the banquet His Excellency the Governor-General arrived, and was received and welcomed by Mr Cameron, the local State school children singing the National Anthem. The Governor-General, in declaring the line open, said that he felt highly honored at being asked to perform the opening ceremony, and he trusted that the railway would be a source of great convenience to the inhabitants of the district. He was sorry to say that this would be the last opportunity he would have of seeing them. It cost him a great deal to leave them. (Hear, hear.) He had a great many friends amongst all sections of the community, and he could hardly bear to trust himself to speak about leaving them. (Hear, hear.) He was sorry Lady Hopetoun was on the high seas, and unable to accompany him that day. Mr Cameron thanked his Excellency for performing the opening ceremony, and hoped the trip home would have the effect of restoring His Excellency to good health again. In replying. Lord Hopetoun thanked them sincerely for the cordial vote of thanks. He hoped Providence would shower her blessings over them, and that they would have a series of good seasons. He would always keep a warm corner in his heart for the people of Victoria. (Loud cheers.) THE COUNTRY. In our illustrations, views are given of a couple of sections of the new line, and glimpses of the surrounding country are shown. The line is eight miles in length, and cost £51,000 in construction. Eltham, which is the terminus, possesses many of the features that go to make a favorite holiday resort. It is a quiet picturesque little hamlet, snugly ensconced on the slope of one of many sombre-tinted hills by which it is sur-rounded. Even when viewed under ad-verse conditions one could not fail to be-impressed with the natural, rugged beauty of the place. It is situated about sixteen miles from Melbourne, and the line takes a circuitous course through a continuation of pretty undulating country. At intervals on the slopes of the surrounding green-mantled hills, patches of brown, freshly tilled soil indicate that for all its serene reposeful-ness Eltham possesses its phases of industrial life as well. Looking down into this valley from the main road which skirts the slope of a hill, distant something less than a quarter of a mile from the railway station is one of the prettiest pieces of scenery in the district. Verdure-clad hills ascend on all sides, whilst beneath stretches a broad expanse of carpet-like green sward, dotted here and there with picturesque homesteads, each with its patches of tilled soil. In the township itself the dwelling-houses are comparatively few, the larger portion of the inhabitants residing in the scattered homesteads. Eltham is as yet only in its youth, but energetic and un-tiring public men can effect wonders in a community's prosperity, and Eltham, whatever other real or imaginary advantages it may lay claim to, certainly possesses this one.
