Domestic object - Kerosene Lantern
During the Victorian goldrushes of the 1850s thousands of Chinese migrants arrived to seek their fortunes. At that time many came to the lucrative gold fields of Northeast Victoria. After the Gold rush, many Chinese migrants returned home. However, a number settled in the area as merchants, hawkers and market gardeners in surrounding towns including Wodonga, the Ovens, King, Buffalo River and Kiewa Valleys. They also rented lands and established themselves in the hops and tobacco farming industries. Items of Chinese origin made their way into many households. Importation of Chinese mass produced items such as this lantern continued well into the 20th century and were common domestic items across Australia before households were connected to electricity. This item is representation of kerosene / paraffin lamps used throughout Australia to provide lighting inside and outdoors prior to the widespread availability of electricity.A small hurricane lamp with a rounded tank and small carry handle attached to the top. Functional object - Wooden Sea Chest, Zarins Sea Chest, 1940-50s
Sea chests held all the worldy belongings of migrant families, when they migrated by ship. Families were eligible for up to two chests depending on the size of the family. From the markings, it appears that there was a second chest, but this is the only chest from this family in our collection. This chest would have been purchased or built by the Zarins family and loaded at the harbour from which the migrant ship left - in this instance that location is unknown. A basic online search reveals that Villach-Austria refers to the DP camp (displaced persons' camp) that the Zarins family originated from. Maybe the chest had been picked up from there, or there were a group of camp residents coming to Australia, we can only guess why this is written on the chest at all. Heavy wooden chest with metal handles on both sides and lid is missing. Metal bands with nails fixed to front and back and sides.Villach-Austria, N-196, 2 piece, AUGUSTS ZARINS, Australia (painted on side of chest in white paint, by hand)wood, wooden, chest, sea chest, zarins -

Pigment inkjet print, Hayley Millar Baker, I Will Survive 5, 2020
Hayley Millar Baker is a Gunditjmara and Djabwurrung artist. Her series I Will Survive is about the cautionary tales and bush survival stories that Millar Baker heard as a child. Her Aboriginal and migrant parents and grandparents shared warnings, myths and ghost stories with her. As Millar Baker grew up, these stories evolved, becoming more emotionally charged with each retelling. As stories are retold, they are reformed and embellished, sometimes becoming more vivid and meaningful. In I Will Survive, Millar Baker inserts herself into the stories. Millar Baker says, ‘Recalling memories formed in my childhood and ruminating on these stories in adulthood, I can’t help but dissect my memory’s influences and influencers, and what roles my Aboriginal and migrant parents and grandparents played in feeding lessons and myths into my subconscious.’ -

Document - Certificate of Naturalization, Dimitrios James Sofianos, 22 June 1928
A copy of Dimitri (known as James) Sofianos' Commonwealth of Australia Naturalisation Certificate issued from Sydney on 22 June 1928. Australian citizenship offered significant rights and was therefore taken up by many Ithacan migrants once they became established and when they fulfilled the requirements which at the time of Dimitri's naturalization were more onerous for those who were not 'natural born' British subjects. Prior to 1949, Australian naturalisation meant citizens became British subjects. It was not until 26 January 1949 the status of Australian citizen was created when the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 came into force. And it was not until the 1973 under the Whitlam Labor government that the distinction between migrants from Commonwealth and other countries in terms of ability to become Australian citizens was abolished. The previous residence requirements of 1 year (Commonwealth migrants) and 5 years (non-Commonwealth migrants) to become Australian citizens was replaced by a common residence period of 3 years, but with a six-month transition period.A scanned copy on A4 paper of a certificate of Naturalization.migration -
