Photocopy of an article in the 'You asked us' section about 'Flanders Fields, and the man who wrote it' published in The Toronto Star 13 November 1971. The article discusses the controversy surrounding the wording of the first and penultimate lines and claims that poet John McCrae originally originally wrote 'grow' but changed it to 'blow' when asked to by the editors of 'Punch'. The photocopy of the article was supplied by Legatee Ken Rabling. Legatee Frank Doolan signed the note he wrote to accompany the photocopy and dated it 7/8/73. An item from Legatee Frank Doolan, who was on the archive committee and made attempts to collate the history of Legacy. An example of the ongoing controversy surrounding the disputed wording. The Man from Snowy River" is a poem by Australian bush poet Banjo Paterson. It was first published in The Bulletin, an Australian news magazine, on 26th April 1890. The poem tells the story of a horseback pursuit to recapture the colt of a prizewinning racehorse that escaped from its paddock and is living wild with the brumbies (wild horses) of the mountain ranges. Eventually the brumbies descend a seemingly impassably steep slope, at which point the assembled riders give up the pursuit, except the young hero, who spurs his pony down the "terrible descent" to catch the mob.Two characters mentioned in the early part of the poem are featured in previous Paterson poems; "Clancy of the Overflow" and Harrison from "Old Pardon, Son of Reprieve".The town of Orbost is situated on the Snowy River and the town has always been "the heart of Snowy River country".A first day cover for "The Man From Snowy River" stamps. Bernard O'Dowd was an Australian poet and anarchist. He was born in Beaufort in 1866 and worked at different times as a teacher, librarian and parliamentary draftsman. He was dismissed from his position at St Alipius' school in Ballarat for heresy. He had a particular interest in the Federation of Australia and formation of the Constitution, which features in his poem "Australia". O'Dowd co-edited Tocsin with Jack Andrews. Tocsin was a labor newspaper in Melbourne. Others involved with the newspaper include Edward Findley and, for a short time, Norman Lindsay. An image from the Herbert Richmond collection, gifted in 1982 to the Ballarat Library. The collection contains approximately 200 photographs of Ballarat and district in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, as well as photo albums, glass negatives and other memorabilia. Herb Richmond was a keen photographer, a foundation member and a life member of the Ballarat Camera Club, and a photographer with the Ballarat Courier during the 1940s. The Ballarat Camera Club named an annual award after him. Mr Richmond died in 1981 aged 79. These images were digitally re-photographed by members of the Ballarat Camera Club in September 2006. This book was published in 1952 by the Australian Poetry Lovers’ Society. This group was based in Melbourne and was founded in 1934 by George and Ethel Fielding. In 1973 a member, Harry Hastings Pearce, wrote a history of the society. This 1952 volume contains two poems by Thomas Terrington (born 1897) - ‘Henry Lawson’ and ‘Stella’. Tom Terrington was a well-known local poet and writer from Framlingham. He has been described as a ‘rhymster of flair and skill’. He was a self-taught person with little formal education and he worked at various jobs until he took over the general store at Framlingham in his middle age. He also recorded some of the history of Framlingham, a small settlement about 24 kilometres north east of Warrnambool. The identity of ‘Fred’ in the inscription is not known. This book is of interest because it contains two poems written by Tom Terrington, a local 20th century writer and poet. This is a soft cover book of 50 pages. The cover is green with black printing and an image of two kookaburras on the front cover. The book has poems by 18 writers and a black and white photograph on page 10 of the late George Fielding. The cover is somewhat soiled. The book has been stapled but the staples have been removed. Irish poet and balladeer Thomas Moore, best-known for penning The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer, is honored in this statue prominently located in Sturt Street created by sculptor George Grant from white Carrara marble. George Grant was trained at the School of Art associated with the National Gallery of Victoria, apparently in the 1880s, and then worked as an artist, specialist house painter, and banner artist. Several of his paintings are held by the Ballarat Art Gallery. Moore`s writings range from lyric to satire, from prose romance to history and biography. His popular "Irish Melodies" appeared in ten parts between 1807 and 1835. Moore was a good musician and skillful writer of songs, which he set to Irish tunes, mainly of the 18th century. This book contains a collection of poems written by English poet and cultural critic, Matthew Arnold, with an introduction by Sir A. T. Quiller-Couch. Matthew Arnold was characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. He was also an inspector of schools for 35 years, and supported the concept of state-regulated secondary education. Ruyton Girls' School has a long tradition of awarding prizes to students at annual "Speech Night" events. Speech Night at Ruyton is an extraordinary occasion. It is a time when we gather to celebrate both the year just lived and the contribution of our Year 12 girls to the life of our School. It is a night of stirring student speeches, acknowledgement of student endeavour and excellence and awe-inspiring performances by School choirs and ensembles. The record has strong historic significance as it was awarded to a former notable student, Helen Gordon (maiden name Cole). Helen started at Little Ruyton in Prep 1940 and finished Year 12 in 1952 as School Captain, Bromby Captain, Form Captain for Matric, Tennis Captain, Hockey Captain, Swimming Vice Captain, and an award for Best All-Round Girl. She also played baseball for Victoria. After finishing school, Helen went on to graduate from the University of Melbourne as a physiotherapist in 1956. Her first position at age 19 involved setting up clinics with the Victorian Health Department Poliomyelitis Rural division. Helen’s strong ties to Ruyton continued when she held the position of President of the Old Ruytonians’ Association from the start of 1966 to the end of 1967. In 2019, Helen received an Order of Australia Medal for service to community health as a physiotherapist. She was also the recipient of the 2022 Victorian Senior Achiever Award at Parliament House. Helen passed away in July 2023 at age 88. This photograph was donated by the Bread and Cheese Club, Melbourne but it is not know to what group or institution it was originally given. It is a copy of a well-known photograph of John Feltham Archibald, taken about 1910 when he was obsessed with all things French and was known at the time as Jules Francois Archibald. John Archibald (1856-1919) was born at Kildare near Geelong (so is not a native of the Warrnambool district) but he lived for some time in Warrnambool with his family. He began his working life with the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper and its successor, the Warrnambool Standard before going to Melbourne. In N.S.W. in 1880, he established with John Haynes, the Sydney Bulletin , a journal that became the most influential one of its day, promoting nationalism and fostering Australian writers and poets. He left legacies to establish the Archibald Prize for artists and the Archibald Fountain in Sydney. This photograph of John Archibald is of some interest though it is a widely-known one and is not original. It is kept because John Archibald, a national figure in Australian History of some importance, spent his school years in Warrnambool in the 1860s and 70s where his father was a local policeman. He went to Henry Kemmis’ Warrnambool Grammar School and wrote about his time here in later years, He also commenced his career as a journalist with the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper and later the Warrnambool Standard newspaper before going to Melbourne. This is a black and white photograph of John Archibald, mounted on cardboard. It has been taken out of its original frame and the typed card with the original frame has been removed and attached to the back of the photograph.The typed card reads: ‘J.F.Archibald, A Native of Warrnambool District. This book of poetry was written by war poet, Violet Bertha Cramer. It is a record of an Australian civilian woman’s perspective on war. The initials are G. K. Cameron, for Grace Kerr Cameron - Grace Charlotte Kerr Cameron. She was the twin daughter of James Cameron and Jane (Jean) Moffat. Her twin sister was Agnes Helen (Nell) Cameron, and her one brother was Harry Purchase Cameron (Roma Smith's father). Another brother Archibald Peter CAMERON, died aged 7. There is a family photo of Mrs Jane Cameron and the twins in the garden of the family home "Carinya". Grace and Nell lived in the family home following the death of their parents. Grace and Nell both died in 1940, then Roma and Ron SMITH lived at "Carinya" after their marriage in 1944. Lorraine and Peter COULTON's home is now on the site. From website: "Shot at various locations by cinematographer Robert Tremelling under the direction of Brenton Manser, the docudrama Rider and Writer is based on poet Adam Lindsay Gordon’s life during the time he lived in South Australia and Victoria. Manser has been researching, planning and developing the script for the new film since February 2012. Much of the footage for Rider and Writer has been shot in Mount Gambier, Port MacDonnell, Penola, Coleraine and Warrnambool. Jakin Manser has the leading role of Adam Lindsay Gordon, and former Grant High School drama teacher, David Reed, returned to Mount Gambier to act in the film, cast as John Riddoch, wealthy pastoralist and friend of Gordon. After 50 commended performances playing Riddoch in the stage production ‘Reckless’, Reed had retired. Only one other film about Gordon is known to exist, produced in 1916. Henry Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet, the most popular one of his day. With poems such as ‘Paul Revere’s Ride’ he helped shape the American character. He was also popular in the British Empire countries and many people in places such as Warrnambool would have had a copy of his published works. The recipient of this volume, Albert Henry Lawson, was the son of Thomas and Susan Lawson, shopkeepers in Warrnambool in the 1870s and 80s. Albert Lawson became a pupil teacher in Cobden in 1903 and from 1904 to 1907 it appears that he was an assistant teacher at his brother’s school, Warrnambool College. This was a private school established by Richard Lawson and William Oakley in 1900. Albert Lawson was given the copy of Longfellow’s poems when he left Warrnambool College in 1907. He then embarked on a teaching career with the Victorian Education Department, married Susan Oakley, the daughter of William Oakley, and died in Melbourne in 1972.This beautiful book of Longfellow poems is worth keeping as an example of an antiquarian book. But it is most significant because of its inscription, telling us of its association with both the Lawson and Oakley Warrnambool College and Albert Lawson, a member of the Lawson family which had many members important in Warrnambool’s history. The inscription tells us that Albert Lawson worked as a teacher for some years at his brother’s school, a fact that was not fully documented until the acquisition of this book. This is a leather bound book of 698 pages. The cover is mottled brown in a raised pattern and the pages are edged with a red-gold tinge. The insides of the cover are edged with a red and gold border and have a blue, brown and cream mottled pattern. There is a sketch of Longfellow in the front with a tissue page covering the sketch. The pages of the book are of fine paper typical of a late Victorian publication. The book has a thin blue ribbon page marker which has become detached from the book. William Shakespeare 1564 to 1616 was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" . His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. They also continue to be studied and reinterpreted. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. At age 49 (around 1613), he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best work produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until 1608, among them Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In the last phase of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as romances) and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of Shakespeare's plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy in his lifetime. However, in 1623, two fellow actors and friends of Shakespeare's, John Heminges and Henry Condell, published a more definitive text known as the First Folio, a posthumous collected edition of Shakespeare's dramatic works that included all but two of his plays. Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael (1867-1904), poet and nurse, was born on 24 February 1867 at Ballarat, Victoria, daughter of Archibald Carmichael, a miner from Perthshire, Scotland, and his wife Margaret Jennings, née Clark, from Cornwall, England. . About 1880 the family moved to Gippsland where Henderson managed a station near Orbost. Grace learned to love the Gippsland forest. She began to express in verse her understanding of the sights, scents and sounds of the bush, often writing in some remote clearing, her manuscripts stored for privacy in a hollow trunk. The Bairnsdale Advertiser published her first story, and the Weekly Times an early poem; then on 28 November 1885 her poem 'The Old Maid' was published in the Australasian under her pen name Jennings Carmichael. Encouraged by its editor, David Watterston, Grace sent nearly all her subsequent verse to that newspaper.
