Bound register containing details of employees and applications for employment with the Electric Supply Company Tramways. Book contains handwritten notes including name, address, referees, comments, employment history, wage increases, etc. The book is in poor condition with many of the pages loose, and some very dog-eared. Handwriting in many cases is difficult to read. Entries date from 1909 through to 1930's. Peter Waugh advised that currently (2013-2014) the information is being copied to a spreadsheet. Pages were placed in correct order December 2013 after extensive research and cross checking. Demonstrates the way the Australian Bi-Centenary and other celebrations were carried out with souvenir prints.Framed print of a horse drawn tram (3 horses) see Reg Item 699 at the corner of Sturt and Lydiard St, within a wooden frame, with non-reflective glazing. The print by the Harris House of Photography has been mounted onto a piece of Masonite. On rear are picture hanging metal loops and a wire hanging strip. Printed onto heavy paper/card. Facsimile (Reg Item 773) made from the item recovered from Horse Tram No. 1 in 1986. Gives details of the Acts under which the by-law was made. By Law made by the City of Ballaarat, dated 6th April 1889. Gazetted 5 April 1889. Signed by the Mayor, J. G. McDonald, two Councillors William Little and David Cooke, and Town Clerk Geo. Perry. James Moore and Sons had a timber and saw mill at City Rd., South Melbourne. They employed over 600 men with a wide range of skills, turning out milled timber for building, household items and other cabinetry, the wooden bodies of trams and even what is believed to be the first commercially produced airplane propeller. The site also included a nail making factory. These goods were sold throughout the state before the company went into voluntary liquidation in 1935. James Louis Moore was born in Ireland 12/8/1843 and died in London 3/2/1913 before his body was returned to Melbourne for burial in the family vault in April 1913. The business continued under his sons Walter, Louis and Arthur. Functional object - ESCO Tram Destination Symbol, Circa 1913
Tramcar Destination Sign used by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria on the Ballarat Electric Trams. The ESCo operated the Ballarat electric trams from 1905 to 1934. Tramcar destination symbols originated in a time when a large part of the population was illiterate. The symbols were displayed on the front of the tram enabling the public to easily identify a tram's destination. The destination signs had a painted circle in the middle, the colour indicated the tram's destination. This particular sign has a yellow circle indicating the destination was Lydiard Street North. See Reg No. 5488.Yields information about how the public related to the trams and their destinations.Square sheet of steel, painted dark green and with a painted yellow circle 125mm in diameter in the middle. Has two circular holes near one side with an extended slot for fastening over hooks or screw heads. Has at least two layers paint with slightly different shades; all layers of paint are flaking.
