The strike took place in 1891 when pastoralists wanted to reduce shearers' wages and bring in non-union workers at lower rates. The author, Julian Stuart, was one of the leaders of the shearers' strike and was jailed for three years with hard labour. He subsequently worked for the Labour Electoral League (a predecessor of the Australian Labor Party).Relevant to the history of the union movement and especially the shearers' union in Queensland.Book; 167 pages. In 1886, the present site at 24 Camp Street, Ballarat was agreed upon and land was granted to the committee in the name of the Ballarat Trades Hall and Literary Institute. Functional object - Leather Cash Bag, early 1900s
Leather Cash Bags were generally used to transport wages and other cash between two locations. Each would have a brass plate fitted engraved with the home station or a from & to location. Cash would have been transferred from country stations to Melbourne. The lock was self-locking. Duplicate keys to the bags were held in the cashiers office Melbourne.Used at local railway station Portland for transference of cash and cheques back to the Melbourne office. The bag is an example of the how people in the remote areas of Victoria used railways and trains to transfer money, banking and other items. The railway system was used to transfer people, goods and cash between the districts of western Victoria.Brown Leather oblong shaped cash bag. Reinforced leather panel on the front with a brass name plant that has been stamped with the word 'PORTLAND'. Leather buckle at the top with eye holes for threading. The Cash Book was used by the Shire of Bulla Electric Light Department to record by hand writing costs associated with supplying electricity, employee wages and users of electricity between October 1909 and November 1926. The first two generators supplied the township of Sunbury and together with the erection of a Power House were officially opened in 1910. Booklet, Patriotic Minute Book Woollen Mill, 1915
This exercise book contains the Minutes of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Employees Patriotic Fund. This fund was established in 1915 in a scheme whereby employees of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill donated 2½% of their weekly wages to the fund to assist with the war effort during World War One. The money received was given to such charitable causes as the Red Cross, the Belgian Fund, the Babies of France and the Local Distress Fund. The Patriotic Fund was discontinued in 1919This Minute Book is of interest as an example of the local campaigns organized in Warrnambool to assist the war effort in World War One. It includes the names of office-bearers of the group and lists the type of activities in which they were engaged. Therefore it is of benefit to researchers. This is an exercise book with a green and black mottled patterned cover with red binding on the spine. A printed label on the cover has been torn away. The pages are cream-coloured with printed blue lines. The entries are handwritten in black ink. The book has been bound with metal staples but the binding has come apart at the top section.
