Photograph, Kennett River, 1964
Black and white photograph taken by Jack Eden at Kennett River, Victoria, in 1964. Image is of a surfer standing next to a VW with surfboards on the roof. Another car and more boards on the ground also appear in the picture. In the background is a peeling wave with a surfer riding it. More surfers sit waiting. Jack Eden was a pioneer of Australian surfing and surf photography. His images capture something of arguably the halcyon days of Australian surfing. Hook Button, late 1800's to mid 1900's
This item and its use and design spans the 1800's to early 1900's both in its fashion and application requirements. The genteel factor must be made when applying it to the Kiewa Valley. The evolution of general clothing and apparel has moved from solid(long lasting) and sometimes expensive material and fasteners to a cheaper and more "throw away" fashion of sometimes monthly change in the later 1900's to 2000's.The significance of this item to a rural setting such as the Kiewa Valley not only points to an integration of "modern" fashion in semi remote rural Australian environments but also the limited connections to "high" fashion through magazines and audible (radio) and visual (cinema) advertising. It also "spotlights" the differences between the European and British social networking and lack of interaction between towns and counties to the "Australian" levels of interactions between rural and city environments. Although physical distances in Australia, during this period (1800's to early 1900's) was a retarding factor in the diffusion of the latest fashion apparel it was not as noticeable as when the global communication and the physical travel abilities were "exploded" in the latter 1900's. This shift towards "the smaller" globe scenario has overcome the physical distances that were so apparent in the previous century. This silver button/glove hook was based on late 1800's designs when buttons became more integrated and fashionable than "tie up" laces. This was more so in genteel fashion. The main hook extension from the "pronged" hand piece has been constructed in a way that allows for easy replacement by either longer or shorter hooks.costume accessories, footwear, shoes and boots with buttons, gloves, costume -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Flag, late 20th to 21st century
Requires more research. The flag appears to be a commemorative listing of British seafarers of World War 2 noting those who served, but this needs confirmation and an improved image. The flag was removed from permanent display in the Flying Angels Club as it requires assessment for cleaning of a build up of dust and smoke. See also existing condition report a new inspection needs to be carried out.If simply a listing of British merchant seamen visiting the Missions in the 2nd half of the 20th Century it is also notable in the history of the MTSV at 717 Flinders st.If confirmed as a WW2 memorial it is also significant. Reg nylon based flag with Union Jack in the top left corner. White trimming down left side with two metal hoops, one at each end. Across the Union Jack is written, 'THE BRITISH MERCHANT NAVY' and in small writing at the bottom of the Union Jack it reads, 'DONATED BY MIKE HALL IN THE U.K.'. Down the right side of the flag says, 'FLAG DONATED BY MIKE HALL IN THE U.K.' The red portion of the flag is covered with handwritten seamen's names and the seamen's registration numbers. Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation
Australian Nursing Federation ratios campaign badge
Button worn by Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) members and staff as an ongoing campaign in the 1990s to 2000s to secure minimum nurse staffing in the public healthcare sector. 'no more than 1 to 4' denotes a ratio of one nurse to a maximum of four patients. During this period, staffing ratios were secured as part of bargaining negotiations between unions and employer groups. After decades of campaigning from the ANF/ANMF, ratios were legislated for the public sector in Victoria with the passing of the Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient) Bill in 2015.Circular black and yellow badge. Silver metal, plastic-coated, with safety pin fastener adhered to back.
