In March 2024, Milissa Box (DTP) was at a trash and treasure market. She'd found a $5 photo album for sale with some photos that she thought might be of interest… From what I can gather it belonged to the gentleman pictured who was a worker at Dandenong in the Comeng and ABB eras. He appears to have worked on the Z3, A1/A2, B1/B2 class trams, Hong Kong LRVs, Comeng Melbourne suburban trains, and later the extra Victorian-purchased XP power cars and XAM sleepers to enable the Riverina XPT to be extended to Melbourne. It's clear he was very proud of the vehicles he'd helped to build. I have scanned a selection of the images, which appear to be a mix of official builder's portraits, team photos, and self-taken shots showing candid everyday scenes on the shop floor. Two prints of each except - .4 .1 - steel beam shown in position in the saloon portion of a tram used to secure a bogie to the body of tram with steel section over transom and showing lifting hooks and securing or lifting bolts. Shown in position where the tramcar body floor was above that of the tramcar transom. .2 - ditto, but on an angle in a wide body tram where the top of the transom matched the top of the floor. Black and white photograph of CW5 684, route 70 outbound in Batman Ave. Ray Pearson's photo listing dates the photo as 1937. The CW5 tramcar was effectively a W5 tram using Brill 22E bogies or trucks as an economy measure during the mid-1930s. The trams were underpowered, with MMTB No. 15 bogies being fitted in 1956. Set of 14 black and white photographs of the use of former sleeper transport car, W2 485 - see page 80 of Destination City 5th Edition for more details of the tram. Tram body being used to train emergency staff how to recover a tramcar that had been tipped over onto its side. DC5, notes it was stored at Preston workshops and later "used an instruction car to train emergency crews in the righting of the overturned trams. It was overturned several times in this role." Note: - would have been at the time, probably the only way to do this, as mobile cranes were only just starting to be developed. Truck is an AEC built Matador truck. Model of Melbourne tram W5 (actually a SW5) No. 812, electric model, made by Cooee Concepts Pty Ltd in China. Model packaged in a wooden packing case with a red felt base, contained within a card board outer case. The card board cover or case has a printed sheet giving details of the model and the history of the W5 Class tramcar. The wooden case has a brass plate detailing the contents. Scale 00 or 1:76. Model made from plastic and metal, with operable lights and motors with operable trolley poles, swivelling bogies, destination of St Kilda, showing route 16. Headlights function in the direction of travel. Package has manufacturing date of 2008 printed on it.
