These two ledgers come from the Warrnambool business of Bruce and McClure. One ledger is a Petty Cash Book with entries dating from 1941 to1945 and the other is a Share Register with entries from 1916 to 1933. The business of Bruce and McClure was located at 159-165 Lava Street Warrnambool and was established about 1900 in premises originally occupied by the plumber and fitter, W. Flett and the blacksmith and farrier, W. Hopkins and in the 1890s by the engineering works of Dobson and Parkinson. Bruce and McClure were engineers, ironfounders and windmill makers and manufactured, produced and serviced farm equipment in a wide area around Warrnambool. In 1945 the business was purchased by the Owen Brothers who later relocated to Caramut Road Warrnambool where it still operates today. These ledgers are of historic interest as they contain details of the operations of an important 20th century business in Warrnambool (Bruce & McClure) and they are very useful for local research. .1 Ledger with a hard green cover and dark red binding. The Orbost Rifle Club existed in the early 20th century. (There are records from 1900). It folded in the late 1970's.Target shooting is one of the oldest organised sports in Australia. Records date back to the British Marines at Sydney Cove in 1788. The Victorian Rifle Association (VRA) was formed in 1860. One of the most important adjuncts to the militia system from 1903 to the re-organisation of 1912 was the role played by the Rifle Club movement in Australia. At the time, these clubs were seen as the reservoir of manpower for a potential guerrilla force should any invasion occur. For Australia, the invasion fear was uppermost in the minds of the population. So important were the rifle clubs for the defence of Australia that the Commonwealth provided the training staff, rifles and ammunition so the clubs could function. Members were drilled, wore uniforms and practised all the basic skills of soldiering as well as target shooting. Although the organization name is not in the book, this ledger appears to have been used as a financial record for the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute from 1904 to 1911. Most of the entries are the names of those subscribing to the Mechanics' Institute Library, the finances connected to the School of Art and Design and moneys received in connection with the Mechanics' Institute billiards room. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute was one of the earliest established in Victoria, being founded in 1854. The School of Art and Design, the second of its kind in Warrnambool, was established in 1883 and continued to be administered by the Mechanics' Institute until 1908. It eventually became part of the Warrnambool Technical School, opened in 1913. A local Museum was a feature of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute for many years. A billiards room was a recreational feature of many Mechanics' Institutes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute closed in the 1960s with the library section continuing and the building was demolished in 1975 to make way for new Warrnambool Council buildings (including a new library)This ledger is of considerable interest as it is an early record of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, one of Warrnambool's most influential organizations.
