Container - Tin, Kiwi Shoe Polish Manufacture, 1940s
The polish was developed in Australia by William Ramsay who named it Kiwi after the flightless bird endemic to New Zealand, the home country of his wife, Annie Elizabeth Meek Ramsay. Its success in Australia expanded overseas when it was adopted by both the British and American armies in World War I. In the UK, Kiwi was for many years manufactured at its British headquarters in Ealing (Brumwell Road, London W5 1DT). From here the factory manufactured for the UK market and exported the Kiwi brand too much of Europe and the Middle East. In the mid-1970s, as part of a major streamlining, the UK factory was closed with production switched to France. The UK operation moved to Surrey at Yately becoming, effectively, a sales and marketing office, with distribution contracted to a third party. In 1980, production for the UK market moved back to the UK and was housed in a factory near Huddersfield. The UK head office was relocated to Maidstone, Kent, where Kiwi had other product interests. Following the global merger with Nicholas Laboratories, the UK head office was again relocated to Slough at the Nicholas building on Bath Road.A significant product as Kiwi is an Australian brand name of shoe polish, first launched and sold in Australia in 1906 and as of 2005 sold in almost 180 countries. Previously owned by the Sara Lee Corporation since 1984, it was sold in 2011 to S. C. Johnson. It is the dominant shoe polish in some countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, where it has about two thirds of the market. In Malaysia and Singapore, Kiwi has become such a household brand for a shoe polish that the word "kiwi" has been genericized into a verb in the Malay language, meaning "to polish one's shoes".Metal cleaning outfit of Kiwi boot polish brush, scraper, & polish missingKiwi Boot Polish to front of containerflagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village -

Container, Henderson chocolate Australia box, Early 20th century
This box was produced by the Henderson business to hold half a pound of chocolates for sale to the Australian public. The box is a souvenir one, with the image of George V of England on the lid. This suggests that the box was produced perhaps to celebrate the coronation of George V in 1910. He reigned until his death in 1936.This box is of interest as a souvenir item sold in Australia and dating back to the early years of the 20th century. It will be useful for display. This is a white rectangular cardboard box with the base extended on all sides about half a centimetre out from the base. The box has a white cardboard cover which has a top with a navy blue background, a Union Jack, the six stars of the Southern Cross (making the Australian flag) with an image of King George V of England. The lettering on the top of the box is in gold print. The cover completely encloses the box. Inside the box are the remnants of a white lace-pattern paper used to line the box. There is a trace of silverfish damage on the side of the box and the edges of the box are a little crumpled. “Henderson’s ‘Australia’ Box, Chocolates ½ lb. Nett.”henderson chocolates -

Container, Cylinder of matches, Mid 20th century
No particular information is available on this item but as the matches were made at a Commonwealth Government factory they probably date from World War Two (1939-45). At this time many essential items that would be of particular use for the war effort were produced by Government factories to ensure a regular supply and to regulate the use within the community. This item has no known local provenance but is of some historical interest as an example of matches produced mid 20th century. Matches at that time were much more important as a lighting mechanism and a common household item. This is round cardboard box in two sections with a circular cardboard lid (slightly bent). The box has a striped black and cream pattern on it. The box has 21 waxed matches with blue or white tips.‘The Commonwealth Match Works, Melbourne, Waterproof’commonwealth match works, warrnambool -

Container, Ventometer
The cylindrical cardboard container with lid formerly contained a ventometer, a small simple tool for measuring wind speed. It consisted of a clear tube containing a small diaphragm which had a hole in the bottom for wind to enter. Once the wind entered the tube it pushed up the diaphragm, indicating the rate of velocity. Ventometers were common devices that have since been replaced by more sophisticated measuring equipment, such as digital air speed meters. Further information on this particular example, including perhaps the name of the manufacturer, may survive on the container but this has not been recorded. The small simple tool for measuring wind speed pre-dates the electronic devices at Gabo Island.Tubed shaped cardboard container with lid to house instrument for measuring. Jar Stone Earthenware, circa early 1900s
This type of "stone" jar drinking container was used before glass and later plastic material made it "out of date" as a drink container. The qualities of the glazed pottery (stone) drinking containers made from this natural thermal insulation material was to contain the liquid to a prescribed temperature either hot or cold, as required. This was particularly important in rural environments that lacked adequate refrigeration means. The rural regions where the last areas in Australia where this type of drinking container remained in use. The late 1960's saw a revival of the basic rural ethos by the "hippie" culture of going to basic survival non "commercial" living. This particular stone jar drinking container was also a method of advertising for a Wodonga Stone masonry manufacturer. It is both relevant and significant to the Kiewa Valley because it highlights the type of industry that has breached the evolutionary trend for cheaper "throw away" drinking containers. Although this particular type of container is limited to quality liquids and it is still available in most rural sectors of the Australian "bush" environment. This stone/earthenware jar has a lip 250mm in length and 150mm thick. This lip will allow the thumb and forefinger to be used to grip the container for either pouring its contents out or securing it for any movement. The external glazed surface may become slippery when wet. The jar is heavy even when empty and would be too heavy for small children to carry. By using a cork seal the jar can be reused and therefore become more economical for the longer term. The thickness of the vessel provides a good insulation for the liquid contained. Most of this type of container would have contained ginger beer.Within two elliptical circles are painted (in freehand) "S. MASON" in the top half and "WODONGA" in the bottom half. These are separated by an asterisk on both sides. A large "S" overlaid by a similarly large "M" is within the inner circle. Stamped into the jar when still wet during manufacture is "PINNACLE BRAND" in 5mm lettering.drinking container, stone jar, ginger beer container, s. mason, wodonga earthen ware -

Glass, Measuring Cups, Early to mid 20th century
These measuring glasses would have been used by chemists and doctors for measuring ingredients for medicines and medical preparations. They could also have been used in households. One of the measurements is the drachm which was a unit of weight and a unit of volume (fluid dram) which was an apothecary measurement equivalent to 60 grains or one-eighth of an ounce. Glass measuring containers such as these could still be in use today but plastic containers are also used. These two glasses are of interest as examples of medicine measuring containers used in the 19th and 20th centuries. They will be useful for display. These are two identical clear glass containers used for measuring medicines. The measurements for tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces and drachms are marked on the side of the glass. Inhiband (Hall) intrauterine devices with dispensing box, associated with Professor Geoff Bishop, Ayerst International Inc, 1960s-early 1970s
The Inhiband intrauterine device is a variety of the Grafenberg Ring. The Grafenberg ring was developed by Dr Ernst Grafenberg in the late 1920s. This coincided with the beginnings of the modern birth control movement. Grafenberg and Herbert Hall migrated to the USA during the Hitler era and brought with them the knowledge of the intrauterine ring. Herbert Hall developed a stainless steel version of the Grafenberg ring in 1949 and used it with select private patients in New York. A report on his results was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1962. The Inhiband product bears his name in brackets. The dispensing box and five remaining containers with Inhiband IUDs inside were from the Albert Street East Melbourne rooms of Dr Geoffrey Bishop. This contraceptive device was commonly used in the 1960s-early 1970s.White plastic container with clear plastic hinged lid and white plastic insert with slots for 10 individual containers of Inhiband IUDs. Contains five individual white plastic containers which hold Inhiband IUDs.
