The Royal Federation of Aero Clubs of Australia is the national body of Aero Clubs and other aviation associations. The prime objectives of the Federation are to foster aviation in Australia, to ensure adequate flying training is available to all pilots and to encourage national and local competitions, air races and other aviation events.(ref R.F.A.C. web site) Orbost Aero Club began in 1969 with Basil Dowie as Chair, David Nixon as Secretary/Treasurer. The group went into recess from 1977-1991 closing in 1997. The mid 1960s were boom years in flying training in Australia and the number of Aero Clubs grew rapidly. The Club played a significant role in the establishment of the small airport at Marlo and in the ongoing operation and development of the airport over the years particularly for patient transfer by aerial ambulance. The first Orbost Brass Band was formed in 1889. Around 1908 the town band split and the Orbost Workers' Band was formed. Eventually the two bands merged in 1913 to reform as the Orbost Municipal Band under conductorship of Charles Spink. The band continued for many years but was later disbanded and again reformed. This was to happen a number of times, the last time being in 1961 and continuing through to the late 1970's. Folding post cards were popular as tourist souvenir of visits to places in Australia throughout the 20th century. Many thousands of the same photographs were reproduced and the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has several examples of these photographs. These folding post cards are kept as examples of the souvenirs tourists bought in the early and mid 20th century and the photographs themselves give a good indication of what Warrrnamool and district looked like at the time. The photographs also indicate what were considered at the time to be tourist spots worth a visit and a photo. These are folding post cards with scenes of Warrnambool. These tickets are of some interest as an example of the activities of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce in the mid 20th century. These are two identical tickets, with black printing on a green background on one side and blank on the other side. This is a card sent by Mr and Miss Robertson thanking the Warrnambool Club members for their sympathy following a recent bereavement. The Warrnambool Club was established in 1873 as a gentlemen’s club and the Warrnambool Club building in Kepler Street, still standing today, was erected in 1877. No information is available on the Robertson family except that they lived in Penshurst but it is presumed that Mr Robertson was a member of the Warrnambool Club.This card is of interest as it has a social history showing the type of bereavement card used in the early 1900s – a plain card with a black edging. These cards could be purchased in bulk with a blank sheet for inserting the relevant details. The connection with the Warrnambool Club and the Robertson family is also of interest.This is a small cream-coloured card with black edging. It has handwritten material on it written in black ink. This is a card sent by the family of Samuel McDonald in 1922 thanking the Warrnambool Club members for their sympathy following a recent bereavement. The Warrnambool Club was established in 1873 as a gentlemen’s club and the Warrnambool Club building in Kepler Street which still stands today was erected in 1877. Samuel McDonald, a Justice of the Peace, died in Malvern, Melbourne, at the age of 78. His wife was Eliza Spiers McDonald. Samuel McDonald was buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery so it is presumed he was a resident of the city at one stage.This card is of interest as it has a social history showing the type of bereavement card used in the 1920s. – a plain card with a black edging. These are two tickets issued by the Warrnambool Boomerang Club. This club was formed some time in 1934 and continued on until at least 1956. By the late 1930s there were nearly 200 members who took part in activities that included picnics, Christmas parties, balls, dances and dinners. Profits from the Boomerang Club functions were donated to local charitable organizations. No information is available on Messrs Gallacher or Abernethy. Mr Abernethy received a complimentary ticket as he was the President of the club at the time (1948)These items are significant items as examples of the activities of the Boomerang Club, an important social club in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. These are two Boomerang Club tickets. One is a buff-coloured card for the Members’ Ball on November 4th (no year) with black printing and the other is a pink card with blue printing, a Complimentary ticket for membership for 1948-49. These documents contain information about the Warrnambool Racing Club in the 1960s. Race meetings were held in Warrnambool as early as 1848, a few months after the first white settlers arrived. The Warrnambool Racing Club was formed in 1854 and the present day racecourse was first used in 1858. In 1872 the well-known Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held. These documents came from the office of Rolf Crawley, a surveyor, architect and engineer in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers, working in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. These documents came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying practice in Warrnambool of Rolf Crawley. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired these documents, along with several ledgers and other Crawley memorabilia, from the estate of Michael Hand. These documents are of interest as they contain much information on the Warrnambool Racing Club and will be of assistance to researchers.This is a collection of documents relating to the Warrnambool Racing Club.
